My first real victory with my vision loss (self.Blind)
submitted by Ancient_Ad_5809
Going out in the sun is extremely painful, even just going into Walmart is rough because of the bright lights. So, I left my glasses at home and just wore my sunglasses to get better protection from the lights, and brought my cane. I have been hesitant to do that, but it's a choice of wear my glasses and see a bit better and have crazy eye pain, or leave them behind and just wear the sunglasses.

To preface this, my wife and I have four children, three are autistic. They have never been so well behaved.

Then we went to Walmart. And we usually don't take them inside for numerous reasons, but they're a handful. My daughter (6) and my oldest son (3) held my hand and helped me get inside the store, and then the three year old held my hand the ENTIRE time, and I really didn't even have to use my cane inside. He is usually all over the place, but he wanted to help me navigate the store (of course we were following mommy). I honest to God could not be more proud.

Such a good day. And I couldn't really see for any of it. Haha. Here's to more good days.

This made my day. Shout out to your family! Those kids are giving back the love they get from you.

Awesome!!! I'm glad it made some other people happy, I have posted here a few times and I feel like it's mostly negative but this was a very good thing that I thought would cheer some people up. Sure did me!!

Is it worth it to get a pair of prescription sun glasses?
Ancient_Ad_5809 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I am working on this. My current eye doctor can't help me with this but I'm being evaluated on Monday to see if I qualify for their services, and I'm hoping they'd be able to point me in the right direction.

Edit: just brought this up with my wife and she reminded me that it would be pointless, as my vision is always changing. Still, worth looking into in my opinion.

Im not sure if they have them where you are, but I use sunglasses designed to go over my normal glasses: $1. They are so handy, and come in full wraparound style too.

Granted this was the 90s and chunky skiing sunglasses were “fashionable” but I have resorted to wearing those or other large sunglasses over my glasses on occasion.

Can you switch to contacts and wear a nice pair of sunglasses?
Ancient_Ad_5809 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I can't use contacts, and I honestly can not really say why. I've always had this weird mental block about touching my eyes. I struggle even with eye drops. I know it's weird, but I can't really say why. I'm not grossed out by it at all.

When I was in seventh grade they offered me contacts and had me try to get them in, and I was there for four hours, two of which they had already closed for. They were so kind about it lol. Never got them in. It's embarrassing.

However, I do have big bulky sunglasses that are more like snowboarding type that go over my glasses, but I have really bulky frames and lenses so they don't have a great seal to block out light. I know, I could be much worse off, and I'm still grateful for what I have, it's just something I have to figure out and work around.

I was exactly the same way with contacts. Amazon has all types of fit over sunglasses though for cheap.

I was thinking the same, even if it helps a little, go for it. Your wife's "pointless" opinion seems a little too harsh.

Great story btw, enjoyed reading it!

I love this.

This has been an empowering experience that should be savored.

Hang on to this feeling and remember it as you continue to move forward.

You have this blindness thing. It does not have you.

It will be a time that I remember forever hopefully. I felt very hopeful and that is an amazing feeling. So much relief. Thank you.
