Question about the white cane (self.Blind)
submitted by PrettyBlind1983
Hi everyone, I need your help. I lost my sight three years ago and still can't use a white cane. Unfortunately I also need to use a walking stick because I have a motor disability. My question is, can two types of cane be used at the same time? It is easy? It's hard? It is impossible? I don't know anyone else with a double disability and I am afraid that I won't be able to walk using two canes which will also leave me with no hands to reach for anything else. Thank you very much for your comments.

You can definitely learn to adapt to use two canes, One per hand. While you can carry things with your hand it’s using a cane it becomes difficult at times. Get yourself a book bag or if you need a carry a lot of things constantly get yourself a gym bag.

Also looking to orientation mobility training which you can get from the local lighthouse for the blind or the state for free

I use both now. I walk around with my support cane in my left hand and my mobility (white) cane in my right along with a backpack strapped to my back to carry the things that would normally be in my hands. Took some getting used to at first but with practice you stop having to think about it.

Shopping that way made me nervous the first few times but I have learned to find whoever is in charge in charge and politely tell them they either need to provide someone to help me shop or let me put my items in the backpack that they could check when I was done. Most let me do my own shopping.

If you have not had Orientation and Mobility, or O&M, training then reach out to you local Blind Services organization and get it, then practice as much as you can after. Even if you have already had it, reach out for a refresher. Make sure they know you need to use a support cane as well. They should be able to help you learn and develop techniques that will work for you and get you back in the world again. Always do what you can to give yourself as many options as possible.

Good luck and remember to enjoy the day.

It is possible to learn how to use a white cane, as well as a support cane, at the same time. It is more difficult, because you have to coordinate your hands to do two things. And you also have to travel a little bit slower, because it can slow down your reaction time. Definitely talk to an O&M specialist about training.

You could also try a walker with a modified front that goes low to the ground that can detect obstacles and depressions/etc. Knew a friend who did that.

You can do both at the same time, it's going to take some practice and if you can get help to learn the exact proper technique - which you must be strict about. A roller cane would mean that you could rest that cane at any time, it's just like a marshmallow or ball shaped that functions like a ball bearing skateboard wheel of plastic. It helps detect dropoffs.

Does it suck not to have a free hand? Yep. Can you switch one cane to the other hand and hold both for a few seconds? Maybe? Perhaps you could get something fitted to one cane to hold the other. There's ways around not having a free hand and most of them involve stopping everything and freeing at least one hand to do the thing, then returning to double hands for movement.

Definitely get training if you can.

Yes you can use two canes at once. Are you in the US? If you are, you should be able to get a O+M instructor who can teach you how to do this. Or you can use a walking cane that is red and white if you're not using the long cane very much.
