my friend has progressively lost his vision more and more as he ages. he has started using a cane, and is still adapting to having less sight in general. He used to play sports and be very active and go to concerts etc but lately he's been kind of stuck inside and not doing as much. does anyone have any hobbies or good ideas that are good with visually impaired individuals? i just want to help him branch out and feel more capable. we have both had trouble thinking of ideas besides going out to eat or going on walks/drinking. we tried a concert earlier this year and had fun, but i could tell it was \*a lot\* for him. hope this post was kosher, and thanks in advanced!

What sports did he do before? I'd say most sports can be adapted - a soccer or cricket ball with a bell, tandem cycling, swimming, running with a guide, even blind-specific sports like goalball.

I'm really glad you're helping him through this. A friend of mine became visually impaired and found it really hard to adjust mentally. He used to do inline skating and extreme iceskating. He learned to adapt and still does both, while only seeing 20% in one eye and 0% in the other.
Almost everything is possible, as long as you are willing to try, but sometimes trying can be really hard. I'm rooting for the both of you!

Many blind people can do sports. He can also hike or walk I do a lot of walking. Also going to the gym is an option, he just has to memorize the buttons of the machine if possible, if not get someone to help him.
Also many hobbies around the house crafts, gardning, watching tv is all doable. So many other ones.
You basically just have to adapt all of them.

Football make me think contact. Have you considered combative sports? If you have a mixed martial arts gym in your are see if the have Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes and ask if he'll take one with you. It's one combative sport that can be done blind almost completely without adaptation. Judo can work as well with minimal adaptation. Either can help with confidence and self defense if nothing else.
Plus, like /u/CosmicBunny97 and /u/astrolurus there adaptive sports as an option.
If there is nothing in your area see if he would be interested in trying to set something up. I bet there are other blind and visually impaired people in your area and sometime it can be easier to convince people to do things for others that we cannot seem to convince them to do for themselves.

If he likes to be active idk what’s in your area but sounds like adaptive sports might be up his lane- of course there’s goalball and beep baseball but depending on location adaptive skiing and sailing is also a thing, Achilles international has running programs, plenty of blind people love to skateboard, etc. Feel free to dm me with your general area and I’d be happy to let you know of any programs I’m aware of in your area!

hello, I don't know much about sports but I found this device on the internet while I was looking for different options to the cane. Apparently it allows you to detect objects on the ground, to the sides and above your head. Additionally, mark an imaginary line for you to walk straight. Probably by using this device together with the cane your friend will perform better in sports. I hope it help and Thank you for supporting him https://strap.tech/.
