Is it possible to orient yourself while swimming? How do you go about it? Both at sea and in a pool (self.Blind)
submitted by Aggressive-Yoghurt31
I recently went swimming at my local beach with my father, I love swimming but I noticed it was very hard to keep going on a straight line so my father would just talk every now and then so I could orient myself, I tried using the Sun but I wasn't very good at it maybe I need some practice

A radio / speaker on the shore / poolside. Looping "your songs" lets you find it in a busier environment.

That is a great solution just have to make sure the speaker is fully charged wouldn't want it to stop while I am in the middle of the sea hahahaha

Oh! I used to do competition swim! I would keep straight by keeping my face straight down and not moving my neck. Idk about casual swimming though? Try music though! It helped me a ton when learning

I don't want to put anyone else off but I find swimming really disorienting for this reason. You can't hear if your ears get full of water, you can't see anyway, and there are no points of reference in a big pool of water. I have a buddy who's been blind way less time than me who I actually mentored through her first couple of years and who is very into swimming. It's a running joke between us that I don't really get on with it, she is the master now, all that stuff.

I don't really know. If anyone figures out a solution please let me know. I used to love swimming and now I just find it really throws me.

If it’s a pool sometimes how deep it is and walls help a lot

use the electric compass sensor to detect the direction and use that data to control the vibration motors proportional to the direction so you know exactly where north is. you can also use 3 motors instead of four, or even 1 or 2 if you set them up so they start vibrating based on how far your rotation differs from the desired direction.

you can waterproof it using any simple method, it is low voltage so in sweet water you could even just use waterproofing spray. such a device is very easy and cheap to make an it can be made very small so you can easily hide it.

\-edit changed- simplified the text and removed the second section which allows one to do this without an electric device since it seemed to be potentially confusing and hard for most people to learn to effectively use it. what the removed text contained: navigating using earthliness which can after some training also be used to feel what direction you are facing and some history and facts about both humans(in the past) and animals using it. removed it because it might be confusing, the device described above doesn't have to do with this and is just a electric compas which makes you feel directions electromechanical(motors)
