what activities have you found to help you feel a deeper sense of purpose when you can't work? (self.Blind)

I GM tabletop RPGs.

Crafting a world for my players to play in and a story for them to experience is richly rewarding. When my players feel joy, sorrow, rage, fear, relief, or triumph, and I can hear just how genuine the emotions are in their voices, it confirms just how immersive the experience I've created is. I love what I do and so do my players.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Absolutely same here. Just wish I was able to play in person more than once a week haha
LID919 2 points 1y ago
You might consider online play. It can be a ton of fun.

If your internet is crap, you could try play by post too.

Even good ole fashioned text roleplay on forums. If you've had DnD experience it's something you could end up enjoying.

Have you done any self development stuff I found it help my confidence and self image more. Knowing who you are and why you do the things you do every move every motivation. Looking yourself in the mirror.
DHamlinMusic 4 points 1y ago
I cannot see myself in a mirror. :D
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Metaphorically but hahaha! Yes I can’t either.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I have, but not since losing my sight to be fair. Perhaps it would be a good idea, thanks!
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Interesting what did you do learning how to tap in to some of those strengths and realizing your worth maybe interesting. Have you looked in to jungian typology or architypes?
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yeah definitely, I think me and you may have talked about this previously actually haha
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Maybe we have.

But I think that a lot of intrspecting may help and I don’t mean take a test and pretend you know type and stick it on as a label but really learn about yourself. Intrspect then understand who you are made out to be and follow those passions and what your tools and gifts are. Maybe find work that way or things to do or even hobbies or places to be in society. Have fun with others etc. or things to study. I find the process of reflecting and stuff to learning about you and reflecting often to take up some time too.

Volunteering for sure, plus it's something to put on your resume if you can apply for work.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Wish I could between my bad internet and living in the sticks the opportunities and rides are few and far between

I live in a rural location too. When I first moved here I was unemployed for about 18 months I did wwoofing (working on an organic farm for free in exchange for bed and board (I had my own accommodation so I didn't end up staying there but it gave me something productive to do.)

Then after having kids and being a housewife for a few years I worked in a charity shop one morning a week.

There are some programs, especially during covid , that require you to befriend someone , one visit or phonecall a week, usually an older person living alone. That might be something nice you can do from home
yoyo2718 5 points 1y ago
Writing fiction.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Ooo that's a great idea. Any programs you know of that read keys when pressed? I only ever found ones that read the words when you finish typing
yoyo2718 4 points 1y ago
I’m still learning screenreaders (voiceover and jaws) so im probably not the best one to comment. Do you mean to have it read as you type? If so, if you have the verbosity set right it seems like when I type slowly enough each letter is read out, and then the full word when you press a space or punctuation after it. If I type fast it skips both the letters and the word readout, but it’s possible that’s my crappy old computers at work (or user error). Maybe someone else can comment. If it’s not reading the individual letters and you want it to, that is a setting you can probably change.
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
Do you have a screen reader? You should be able to set it so that you can hear everything you press, for example if I press letters and turn the feature on, I would be able to hear what I’m pressing.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I do I have NDVA (or something similar to those letters ) I'll have to play around with the settings. Right now it only reads words when I finish typing
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
Press either the caps lock key and number two or number three, or try insert and number two or number three and you should be able to change settings like that. You can go into the settings window but doing it with a shortcut is easier.

Nothing, I left my first job within a month. It was not paying that good any way.

Edit: But, while studying, having hobbies helped me. Audio editing, reading books, whatever. I would love to volunteer, but, don't see any blind friendly opportunity around me.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Yeah that's how I feel too. The only opportunities are online and my internet is too intermittent

I follow live legal cases. It's something I've discovered about 3 years ago. Well I actually discovered it way before that, I just realized they were actually streaming on Youtube around then.
The testimony helps keep me sane when I'm going through one of my week or more long migrane/headache spells
NovemberGoat 1 points 1y ago
What channels do you follow? I've been wanting to get into this for a while, but haven't yet worked out how to pin down the real goldmines.
unwaivering 2 points 1y ago
First I just have to say that this may not be available, depending on your country. Although they do seem to have a lot of international followers. I had a friend from New Zealand try, and she said she couldn't open any of the video links. I follow Law Crime network.

They have extra channelse so they cover multiple cases at once.
Here's channel B: [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVXOqoOCYbi-iXChKAl6DTQ]
Channel C: [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXCLaaClAWQiTkl3pw9ZdLw]
Channel D: [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMV3pzWIhJGLYzoHyxBjjNw]
I also use the Court TV trial archives.

Volunteering for sure, I work with a youth group which gives me the opportunity to do something productive with my time and the girls an opportunity where disability/service animals are just a normal part of their day. Really just did a quick 5 minute introduction and question period then for the rest of the year we just did what works best for us as a group.

Alternatively spending time online with friends, the pandemic has forced us to figure out how to keep ourselves busy while socially distanced which for us primarily looks like D&D. But could be something else for other friend groups.
ravenshadow2013 2 points 1y ago
I have a friend who volunteers at her local ASPCA, she's become a regular cat and kitten whisperer
pisces0387 1 points 1y ago
would love to do something like this, but don't think any societies over here would let me do that. We're pretty backwards when it comes to some things in Ireland. Hell some people didn't even think I should have been allowed adopt my cat.
ravenshadow2013 1 points 1y ago
I'll do some looking for you and get back to ya

Have not had a job in a while at this point, last one was years before I lost my sight. Been a stay at home partner for most of the last 7 years, did the housework, handled things like managing bills, household expenses, etc. Since going blind I have been trying to get back to all that but has been slow going, also have a daughter now as well so there’s that. Otherwise I used to go play Magic the Gathering once or more a week but have not since before this lovely pandemic as the shop has not started hosting events again yet and lost my sight right at the start of it. I watch TV, play piano, hang out on the r/blind discord,, read, etc.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Wow how did you play magic? I have central vision loss and would love to play MTG or hearthstone again lol
34Emma 2 points 1y ago
There now is a patch for Hearthstone called Hearthstone Access. It works really well, so have fun with that!
DHamlinMusic 2 points 1y ago
I had full sight until a couple years back, lost almost all of it to head trauma from injuries sustained in a home invasion in early 2020.
ParakeetYeeet [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Oh man that is awful, sorry to hear that.
dandylover1 1 points 1y ago
I have never understood the concept of work giving someone purpose, self-worth, dignity, etc. My purpose is to enjoy life and be happy, and I do things which help me accomplish that goal. Some of these are not activities, but I enjoy studying dandyism, Received Pronunciation, and the Regency, Grammar prescriptivism, trying coffees, teas, and nasal snuffs, antique menswear (no feminine clothing or makeup), chamber music, fine dining, cooking and baking from scratch, theatre, reading nineteenth-century British literature, writing, and playing card, dice, and parlour games.
