Thinking about paying people to mod accessibility in games. (self.Blind)
submitted by Daniel6Skins
I used to play a lot of games when I had the sight for it. And honestly I miss it a lot. With the semester coming to an end there were some games I wanted to give another shot at but I know I wouldn't be able to without more accesability. So I had the idea to pay modders to mod-in features.

The games I'm thinking about are Minecraft Bedrock edition, Xcom 2, Kenshi, and Crusader Kings 3. I know the Minecraft java edition has an accesability mod but I'm going to be playing on the bedrock edition which has cross play with consoles.

I'm still in finals week in school so I wanted to put out some feelers before I start contacting modders and figuring out what is possible.

Does anyone here have experiencing in modding? Or do you guys have suggestions that would help make a game like Minecraft more accessible? I have some ideas related to auto rotating the camera to waypoints so you know which way is your house for example.

I am blind, and I'm working on an accessibility mod for a game you did not list. I was considering crusader Kings three as a next project, but the documentation is very limited. I have been trying to figure out if they have a way to print to a log file as that would be the primary workaround to output speech.

What mod are you working on currently, if you don't mind me asking? As an accessibility consultant myself I'd be happy to assist from a testing/feedback point of view.

I was keeping it a little hush-hush, because I didn't want to be accused of vaporware or be beaten to the punch, but I am almost done now and will post an update in a few weeks. The game is called Factorio end it is a strategy survival game about building a factory on an alien planet. My hope is to show that no matter how complex the game may seem, it can still be made accessible.

Is it... $1

Regardless, I'm always up for trying new games and would be glad to have a discussion with you about the work you've done to disseminate information when the time comes, stream the game, etc if that's of interest to you!

That would be it! I appreciate the offer, and will let you know when it gets a little closer to release.

Oh Factorio nice. Definitely let us know how it goes when you're ready to show it.

Would I be able to beta test this? I really love the idea of this video and if this game is accessible, it sounds exactly like Mike kind of thing. It kinda reminds me of crafting Kingdom, just a lot lot better.

If I can try it out, PM me, if not that’s completely fine an i’ll wait for a couple weeks.

For anyone with iPhones or iPads I make a few free and totally accessible games.

They are not as popular as you list but if you like a dungeon style turn based rpg with tons of depth and built in accessibility feel free to give it a try.

Woooo!

Sounds like fun. Do keep us updated on how things work out. This fellow Lium, not sure if I am spelling his name correctly, he produced some accessibility mod for GTA5. Perhaps try reaching out to him may be.

This’ll be interesting, hopefully this works out and you can bring more accessibility to mainstream games, especially for blind players. I really wish there was an accessibility mod for Divinity Original Sin 2. My favourite game (Sims, either 2, 3 or 4) will probably never be made accessible, it seems like an impossible feat.
Daniel6Skins [OP] 1 points 1y ago
ah yeah those are some games I'd like to play. Original sin is like Xcom in its turn-based gameplay. I feel like making these games accessible is technically possible but would either need deep modding or work from the developers themselves. I'm in the music production world and there's a lot of software that was made accessible because blind producers worked with individual companies to make it accessible.

Like I said in my post, I'm in finals week for school so I won't be looking into it until the end of the week. But I will be starting with Minecraft.

Yeah, I just hope that all this awareness surrounding accessibility brings more collaboration and change. Let us know how you go with Minecraft :)

I am no modder, but I do have a suggestion:

There are a lot of hard working modders for most games that just do it for the love of making games do different things so they might do it for free

When you get to the point of asking, you have to have a list of features that you think would help your specific visual issues. Also maybe some alternatives if you think of it.

"You could program the camera to auto rotate to help my find my house in Minecraft or maybe keep a navigational line (in the color of my choice)

I wouldn't mention the word " accessible" either because there is a good chance they wont know what it means.
