Coping with partial vision loss (self.Blind)
submitted by FaithlessnessOwn3397
Hallo dear community! The last two months I have a sudden unexplainable deterioration of my vision and I am coping pretty bad. Everything became blurrier and darker, I have huge halos/starbursts around lights and night blindness. The eye doctors dont seem to find anything and they just say is dry eyes or psychological, but really such a huge deterioration cant be that. I am mourning my lost vision and in constant panic because I cant do my desktop job anymore and have no idea what kind of job I could do to survive . And I guess its kind stupid but it also bothers me that the problem is downplayed by people in my environment since "the doctors cant find anything and I can walk around without bumping onto anything can recognize faces so it cant be that bad right?" And having history of depression/panic attacks everyone is sure its just me being dramatic about something minor and if I take the right psy meds to calm down my vision problem will go away... I really dont know how can I survive, with no real supporting environment just people and doctors gaslighting me, a new disability and losing my job. Do you think someone with poor vision could do odd jobs like retail, waitressing or cleaning?

Its not dumb to feel panicked or stressed! Vision loss is difficult to deal with! Just because you still have some and can get around some does not negate how difficult it is for you! It's not a competition.
I had emergency brain surgery and lost most my vision afterwards. Maybe see a neurologist, my eyes and ocular nerves are healthy and my vision loss is from something being wrong with my brain.
I struggle alot with being embarrassed to use a cane and feel scared asking people for help or just saying I'm struggling with adapting since I can still read some and for the most part get around places I know unaided. If you can where you live I'd really suggest counseling, also this community has helped me so much with coping! I hope you can feel better and if you need someone to talk to or vent feel free to send me a message!

I feel your pain. Sudden vision loss is extremely hard to deal with and it's even harder when others around you can't relate.

What kind of job were/are you doing? There are lots of ways assistive tech can help you do everyday work.

I started losing my eye sight almost 3 years ago to prolific retinopathy. Before the DX, I had 2 functioning eyes. January of last year, I lost my right eye and now how partial vision in left eye. "Good" eye has its own set of issues which makes it hard to go outside or go to stores due to light sensitivity. I don't drive anymore, either. I ended up losing my best job this past Feb because of my eyes. So now, I'm living with my folks while I try to get my shit together, which hasn't been easy, either.

I would suggest seeing an ophthalmologist instead of a regular eye dr. They are more specialized and should be able to treat your eyes, depending on what they find. Also, seek out a vision rehab clinic for orientation and mobility training. They'll train you to cope with your vision loss so you can do what you want to do. Lastly, get in touch with your Department for Families and Children. They'll have a Vocational Rehab program to help you get back into the work force with little to no out of pocket expenses from you. I'm working with them now and if all goes as planned, I should be going back to school this Fall at their expense.

Blind people could do a very wide range of jobs and yes those are possible and many more. Many desk and office jobs physical jobs a lot of them are accessible.

Ach I am sure blind people can do a lot. Just not me as low vision/blind. I was barely coping as sighted because of cptsd, depression no support system and having to change country for work. I had found my niche in my current job which was not so stressfull and paid ok. Now I have all my old problems + an extra disability in a foreign country. And yeah going back to my home country is not an option anymore- the poorer the country the shittier it is for the disabled. I am pretty sure my hometown is impossible to navigate for someone with a cane or a wheelchair.

Have some confidence in yourself. I mean not so much that you become inflated but a healthy amount is good. Believe in yourself a little. You can do this!

Sorry to hear this.

I am sure you’ll find a way out retrain or get some skills and get back up on your feet I am sure you can.

Hey thanks for answering! I was working as a software developer. I know there are blind people who still code but I cannot imagine it for myself. I found it already hard understanding code with full sight. I also dont live in the US, I am a migrant in Germany from Greece. I could move back to my parents in Greece but there I would fucked, unemployment is really high even for the sighted and help for disabled people is almost nonexistent. I guess I should explore what are my options in germany...

Are you working right now or do you get ALGII from the Jobcenter or ALGI from the Agentur für Arbeit? If you are without work ask for a Bildungsgutschein or AVGS from either of those places, I am not blind but work with jobseeking foreigners here and those places might be able to help. Good luck and feel free to write if you have any questions!

Oh hey thanks for answering. I am on sick lave right now (krankgemeldet) since my vision problems didnt start long ago (1-2 months). I am not sure I can go back working as a programmer wih poor vision but I also dont know what kind of job could I do and ask Bildungsgutschein for. It seems like most visually impaired people do prefer computer jobs even with 5-10% vision, I dont know why for me it feels being so hard working on one
