How do you guys use Steam with s creen r readers? (self.Blind)
submitted by ChipsAhoiMcCoy
I'm trying to comit more to using my NVDA screen reader over using the little vision I have left to navigate, and I can't seem to get Steam to work well with the screen reader? I attempted to use the -no-dwrite run command that I saw somewhere online, but that didn't seem to do anything, so I'm unsure how you guys manage to navigate steam? Would love some insight, thanks!

OP, you're correct, those top buttons aren't in the webpage portion of the client for some reason.

You can still get to them by , with the Steam window maximized, using nvda's object navigation to go all the way up to the desktop object, doing an nvda+r to OCR the screen. You'll find the buttons listed then. Use NVDA review commands to focus on the button you want, nvda=shift+m to bring the mouse to that position. You can then click the mouse or use nvda+\[.

These keys are based on the laptop layout, desktop should be easy enough to find in the guide.

I haven’t actually learned how to use object in navigation quite yet but I do understand what you mean by Windows OCR when I OCR the screen, and it tells me store and library etc., is there somewhere I can activate those buttons after OCR has scanned them? Sorry if I’m not following correctly I’m still learning NVDA but thank you very much!

So ...the way OCR works is that it adds the text it's found to the content reviewable with screen review keys. Those are nvda+arrow keys in laptop mode.

Anything you focus object navigation or screen review on, you can bring the mouse to using nvda+shift+m. That will take the mouse and bring it to the location of that bit of text on the screen. SO in your case, you could find, say, the games button using nvda+arrow keys, hit nvda+shift+m to take the mouse there, then press nvda+\[ to click.

As for object navigation ... essentially the way that works is it turns your entire screen into a kind of russian doll concept, if that makes sense. A button could for example be in a toolbar, the toolbar could be in a window, and the window could be in the main desktop window as it were, which is always the outermost thing. You can navigate that tree with nvda+shift+arrows on laptop, and for your purpose you'll want to hit nvda+shift+up a couple times before you OCR, because otherwise it won't capture those buttons you're after.

I hope that helps a bit :)

First of all, make sure steam’s in English.

Then when you’ve logged in, you should be able to navigate the app as it were a webpage .

t for table would be a very useful shortcut here.

Well, the weird thing here is on the Steam client on the top of the page there are buttons that take you to your library, the store, the community tab, and your profile tab the problem here is that NVDA can’t seem to recognize these buttons but it can recognize the entire webpage portion of Steam so the problem I’m facing is that I’m unable to click the library button to go to my games library and click the field that lets me search for the game I’m looking for

The way I do that is, press T, Arrow down or press g until I here the game I want, press enter then Arrow down to the play button and press enter.
