Should I be driving with no peripheral vision? Mother is pressuring me to.(self.Blind)
submitted by Unusual_Werewolf981
Update on my left eye from my last post. Dr says there is still bleeding and to at this point just wait it out and let it clear eventually.

While it might be legal for you to drive, do you feel/believe you can do it safely? If you don’t feel safe don’t let your mother pressure you.

I do not feel or believe that I can do it safely. I almost got into two accidents with a friend in the car recently because of it. Thank you I’m trying not to

It really all depends upon what state you live in, if in the US. Each state has their own restrictions on degrees of peripheral, except Delaware which has none. If you know how narrow your field is, check it against your state's limits. Here in PA, I'm too far gone to come close and am happy to be a passenger.
Should you become involved in an accident, your medical records will be shared. Your insurance company may or may not support you.

Yeah I’m in California and I have no field whatsoever. 0 peripheral vision due to losing it during RP surgery when I was a week old.
CA DMV: “field of 110-degree horizontal vision without or with corrective carrier lenses. he/she must have a field of at least 40 degrees temporal and 30-degree nasal horizontal vision.”
I’m so sorry to hear that about yourself but I’m happy to hear that you are safe

I have right homogeneous hemianopsia and in New Jersey I *could* legally drive. But I know what I can see and maybe more importantly what I can’t see. I have never driven.
There is one case that I read about, a person with homogeneous hemianopsia sued NJ MVC when they took his license away after like his 19th accident. He lost the case.

Thank you that makes me feel a lot of better and Oi vay I can’t believe that case happened that’s crazy.
Mamamagpie2 points1y ago
I would have shared the link to the case but it is not accessible (a scan of a 19 page document with no OCR). But looking at it again he had 21 motor vehicle accidents 17 after the injury that caused his vision loss.

Thank you for taking the time to try and link it to me. That’s ridiculous and insane. I can’t believe that happened, I’m shaking my head right now. I will keep all of this in mind and for records in case the conversation comes up again with my mother. Thanks again.

Don’t do anything that makes you feel unsafe. Also, if you don’t have enough peripheral vision, you’re probably not even allowed to drive. Driving without a license can be a costly offense. My little brother kept doing it and ended up in county jail for 6 months.

Thank you that’s exactly what I am doing and getting myself out of an unsafe abusive living environment soon. As for peripheral vision, that’s what I thought and I don’t have any at all. Yeah I definitely won’t be doing that and won’t be driving because even I feel unsafe walking around even if I’m careful I’m still second guessing myself crossing the street. I’m so sorry to hear about your little brother. Mine is the same way but hasn’t been caught yet surprisingly but for whatever reason he won’t go get his license. He’s still driving around with just his premit and he’s 27 now. I’m 27 as well and only have my premit too. I was going to get my license but like I said I don’t feel safe doing so but am being pressured by my mother to get it thinking I can’t be independent and get around with Uber on my own and thinks I’ll regret it in long run.

If you are unsure, don't drive. My right eye had an eye stroke and doctor said you can still drive with theleft eye. Then one day driving home from work missed a road I use and realized a problem with the left eye. Then an eye stroke to the left eye a couple of months later. Parked my company car in the driveway in August 2018 and that was the last day I drove, a car anyway. I still cut the grass on a riding mower, but I run into trees once a while among other things getting cut up. I could not live with myself if I injured or killed someone operating a motor vehicle with my visual impairment. I am looking forward to the day when Elon Musk (or anyone else) gets that full self dining car approved. I could use Uber or Lyft, but they are not out by me and when I look for rides the prices are crazy high now, almost double. Good luck. Edit for spelling errors.

Thank you so much for your input and telling me your story. You are absolutely right I am in the same boat meaning I don’t want to injure myself or someone else too because I can’t see on the sides of me. I’m so sorry to hear it happened to you but I am happy you are safe

I think you are doing the responsible thing by avoiding driving while you feel unsafe. If you got in an accident and someone got really hurt I think they would try to use it against you even if that wasn’t the actual cause. i.e. they jaywalked in front of you; you didn’t see them fast enough, couldn’t brake in time
Unusual_Werewolf981 [OP]1 points1y ago
Thank you for actually taking my condition seriously. This is the first time anyone besides my partner has taken it seriously. I couldn’t agree more with you because I honestly feel that is something that could happen. There are plenty of times I accidentally bump into someone because I didn’t see them due to having no PV. So in that sense I feel that’s exactly what could easily happen as well and I wouldn’t want to have the same example you provided happen to me. So I’m being on the safe side and standing my ground on not driving. Thank you for your comment.
Its0nlyAPaperMoon2 points1y ago
If everyone followed the rules and gave each other space on the road, and didn’t speed up into your lane when you put your blinkers on, then it would probably be fine. But we all know they don’t. PV is probably a major reason that car accidents are averted or are only minor accidents instead of deadly crashes.
Unusual_Werewolf981 [OP]1 points1y ago
Exactly but they don’t and you get people who even don’t signal at all and just change lanes or even come to a complete stop randomly. You don’t know many times I’ve had close calls as a passenger. Plus it’s hard for me to pay attention to what’s on my left or right when with mirrors I can’t fully turn my head and drive to where I need to go in front of me. I don’t think those around me understand that it’s not just turning my head a lot. I know everyone needs to do that but it’s not easy. If you’ve had PV, you don’t fully understand what it’s like never having it in the first place. Oh I’m sure PV definitely has helped I wouldn’t know obviously but I greatly assume. Thank you for talking to me. You’ve help make me feel better about all this. I greatly appreciate it

On the sub r/samegrassbutgreener there is a lot of discussion about cities and towns that are walkable or have good public transportation. If you haven’t already seen a low vision optometrist, they may consider prism glasses for you also
Unusual_Werewolf981 [OP]1 points1y ago
Thank you everyone for commenting and being very helpful. I appreciate every single one of you wholeheartedly.

I am blind in one eye so I don't have much peripheral vision. It is very possible to drive, you just have to be extra careful with checking your blind spots. Maybe practice checking and turning your body more on quieter roads before going on the highway.
