There are People who don't like the fact we can Actually do better than them, despite our disability. (self.Blind)
submitted by blind_system
Some of my classmates would shoot me dirty looks for participating in class, despite the fact no-one else would when the teacher asked. I only found out through a friend. I found the entire thing rather funny.

Ironically, some of them would come asking for help because they knew I was among the few that could get things done in time.

Has this happened to anyone else?

My brother in law has a "friend" who's extremely jealous of his ability to play drums. "Friend" is mediocre at best, and BIL is a far better drummer than he'll give himself credit for. Big time impostor syndrome. BIL is legally blind and had to figure out a lot of things the hard way, and I still usually help him with setting up his kit.

So "friend" never misses an opportunity to cut down BIL's abilities. I told this guy that if he spent half the time practicing as he did bitching about someone else's playing, he'd be as good as he thinks he is. "Friend" doesn't come around all that much anymore, and good fucking riddance.

You're a good brother/sister-in-law to tell the "friend" off like that.

A few months ago, a friend of mine asked me if I’d be willing to help one of our fellow training partners who trains at our MMA gym with their masters level SQL database management class. This training partner was like “you mean the blind guy who trains? For real?” My friend having learned Python from me responded “dude, just trust me, he knows his stuff”. After helping him with the final assignment and him nailing the assignment tells my friend later “dude, he is amazing at this stuff!” Referring to me. Felt good to rock someone’s preconceptions so thoroughly. And since he’s the assistant wrestling coach at a nearby high school with one of the best wrestling programs in the southeast, it means I’ve gotten some good wrestling tips and pointers from him too. Had several other encounters like this. Just enjoy helping folks out and so it’s always nice to be able to do that while simultaneously changing some perceptions.

I'm a children and teens librarian. I get best local community helper every year from one particular school and most years i also get it from one of the local schools. No other librarian in our 17 branch library system has ever gotten it.

I am also considered a troublemaker because I point out when admin is being super sucky to the employees in my system. But also because of all my disabilities.

Recently, some of the people who are admin tried to get me disqualified for the award at the schools. I never win any awards in my own system. I've actually been told I am blacklisted from being promoted. It's why I stopped interviewing in my system.

Anyhow, the local principal got pissed, told me about it, and wrote an email and sent it to everyone involved plus our county.

People are still salty I'm so beloved by the local school and kids. The kids vote, but the school teachers put up all the names they can think of on the ballot. So, recently my mentor, who was assigned to me requested that I ask the school to take me off the ballot. I officially got out of the mentorship program when I told them that I'm not the one making the list or voting on it.

Currently, my library system is being sued for discrimination against people with disabilities, women, and minorities. I hope she wins.

Years ago, before we moved, I had a neighbor who, despite me telling him I worked from home, was convinced I didn't work and was living off disability. He would bring it up every chance he got because I think he needed to have someone to feel superior to over his own low income.

Then one day he came in my house for the first time and his reaction to the nice furniture, electronics, and game collection in my living room was "wow, how'd you get all this stuff?"

Uhm... I bought it with the income from my job as an engineer.

Yes both sighted and blind though. But from sighted too. I may test as some ordinary person on like personality tests but don’t underestimate me either. Haha!

I am a female, plus woman plus pretty intellectual and know my stuff. People call me hermione granger. I am the person who does extra work, and read abundantly. I just got or will reget probably next month books on prayer and theology.

Anyway no one would ask me for help or ask me to help them at all. They wouldn’t even approach me. One guy later admitted to me, I didn’t feel like I could talk to you, you are too smart. Another guy currently in my math course said, oh if she’s having trouble then that’s saying a lot! I think there was always the blindness issue in high school plus more. In college everytime I offer to help no one wants it. I am usually the a or a+ in the class sometimes a++ with some extra credit. I use to be the student first one with their hand up, who knew absolutely every answer.

I went to a bible study recently and some woman sought me out and said I learnt a lot from you. I study theology and christian stuff very hard. I study a lot and almost a walking talking dictionary hahaha!

Yeah, I intimdate the frick out of people because on top of being blind I am female and I am a racial minority even if one that does very well for themselves I am asian so yeah.

I love when they do that. There are some pretty nasty throws in judo I save only for these ocasions.

When I was in Tae Kwon Do as a young teen, I'd do alot of things without my glasses and even then without my glasses I could see very little. And I loved showing people up this way. I became too of the class, and my proudest moment was taking down my 300 lb dad (he was in the class too lol). Alot of people think you're useless without vision, and that's far from true.

I've been doing judo for more than ten years. When did you start?
ukifrit 2 points 1y ago
10 years on and off. But with consistency since 2017.
DrillInstructorJan 2 points 1y ago
Hehe have you separated a shoulder yet?

I am tiny and like to get involved with people I have no chance with. My partner calls it over compensation hour and I often go home limping but it's great.
ukifrit 2 points 1y ago
Tiny people are the worst to throw :D. I've separated my AC in 2019, my only bad fall.
ukifrit 2 points 1y ago

Edit: I don't take people down outside the judo mats.

Had a few guys talk shit about me while in high school cause I was able to do more pushups? I found out through a tweet. Funny.
If fuckers in the gym spent more time actually lifting rather than staring at themselves in the mirror I think they'd be better. Its whatever though lol. People would do that either way, blind or not. Thats life.

It doesn't have anything to do with your disability. I don't have one and I was bullied through all my school years. I was always minding my own business, I liked to learn, was into video games and stuff like that. Most of the other kids just made fun of the teachers, they thought bad grades are cool, and were only interested in football. I wasn't a pushover though. I also liked combat sports from a young age and that helped me a lot going through school and I was always able to defend myself in physical confrontations.

If they give you dirty looks good for you. It just means you are better than them, you are superior. You shouldn't feel bad about your situation, you should feel bad about theirs and try to help who really deserves your help and your time.

Depends on mindset I suppose. My classmates actually make sure that I would participate, if I raised hand, they would make sure that teacher would give me chance to speak up. Hugs to my classmates, I love you all!

Doesn't mean there weren't some gerks, but, friends were more.

A more general headine could read: "There are People who don't like the fact we can Actually do better than them"

There's a lot of insecure people out there who find it threatening that *anyone* can do anything better than them.

Probably a result of reducing competition in school and making sure *everyone* gets a prize.
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Very true this is not a blind sighted issue.

I know a guy who’s totally blind was born that way, and I wasn’t but wasn’t very far off had not much vision to begin with and lost all of it at 8 so no such blind sighted divide.

And I am sure of it he and his girlfriend is so insecure, or maybe it’s not his girlfriend I have no ideas anymore, they’ve been so untrutful to me I don’t know who or what to believe concerning them.

But anyway, because I have been a successful blind person generally seen as very smart and competent, and does very well for herself. Does a lot of stuff in the community, and very well known for it locally representing, and advocating. I think he’s jealous to the brim because he wasn’t and I mean he’s more now but still I am honestly more effective at it, and he knows it. So he has gone out of his way to trick and play me. He resents me when I give him feedback. Yeah, you get the idea.

So affirmative.

I’ve had other in the totally blind community get jealous and resent me because oh yeah, I know how to save and do well on myself. Where do you get all your money. I save. And then they hate it when I give them advice about saving. I dispite not having much have 3 computers 2 tablets, 3 smart home speaker, including the alexa studio an iphone and two apple watches.
