My grandfather got switched over to jaws by his company and his new computer doesn't have an insert key. (self.Blind)

Is there a way to activate the help function without an insert key?

You can very simply change the keyboard layout to laptop, that way you can use capslock instead of insert and it won't require any new peripherals.

Laptop layout can use caps lock. Or you can use power toys to replace something like print screen or scroll lock with insert

so we discovered that his computer doesnt have a network adapter for some reason so now i will need to bring him a network adapter so we can get into store so we can download power toys so he can use the insert key to get help. this is incredibly frustrating lol. fortunately he has a computer lesson with his friend who is more used to the system next week

2012 or something like that for me, after installing Ubuntu on a brand new laptop. The NIC was newer than the ISO I had, so it didn't have drivers for it.

I know it's incredibly bizarre. But there's not a network adapter or at least the computer isn't detecting it.

That's very strange. In fact, I'd say it's an issue for the company's IT department. What's an employee even supposed to do with a computer with no internet access?

You don’t actually need one, worked with a smaller laptop with jaws all the time a while back as said before change the modifier key and no big issues. Jaws is a very expensive piece of software and made pretty versitile. It’s not something he needs to retraine for at all.

Simple solution: go to the jaws menu>file>basic settings>layout: laptop. His caps lock key will work as insert and as caps lock if pressed twice

1. All computers have with either Wifi or USB/USBC so you can use a USB to Ethernet dongle. Most of us just use Wifi these days. Since it is a company computer, there has to be a network connection. They may have assumed he was using Wifi at home and not provided a wired dongle.
2. With the USB port, you can connect a full size keyboard with the keys you need.
3. Missing keys on the keyboard are normally some sort of double sequence. Such as holding down the function key.

Switch the keyboard layout to laptop. I’m not a JAWS user any more (I’ve used NVDA since 2010), but if I remember correctly, the laptop layout is a superset of desktop with the addition of caps lock as a JAWS key. At least in the old versions, this was in options -> basic.

Get him a regular keyboard. If this is in the U.S. tell them they have to provide him one immediately.
