Jaws and Gaming? (self.Blind)
submitted by Noma_Datheart
Have any of you been able to use Jaws or Apple’s Voice Over to play games on a computer?
Games like Witcher or Assassins creed, War Craft, Elder Scrolls and so on….

Unfortunately, those games aren’t accessible.

However, you could try steam.

If you look up how to use steam with a screen reader you’ll find an article and if you read that you could set up your own steam account and go from there.

Some games that work with steam are: Hades and Stardew Valley.

...that's not how a screen reader works at all.

Thanks for the input friends.
I know games like the ones I mentions are far from accessible but they are my favorite game types and I know technology is advancing exponetially so I’m just trying to keep my finger on the pulse (so to speak) of what’s available.
I’m trying to keep tabs on Neuro-link as it sounds both amazing and terrifying at the same time.

N I find JAWS's OCR not very great ... it's very slow, but NVDA's OCR actually does a really good job much the time reading things like text boxes and other blocks of text. As long as the contrast is good enough to let the OCR read it, it works well for reading things like the Witcher 3's glossary and other readables. Though I honestly don't know how a person would play the witcher or similar games in their current state. There are however a lot of games which could be made accessible.

Short answer, not really possible, but I wish it were.
You can sort of play without, though. Just using game audio. But not really for elder scrolls.

im low vision and i played skyrim from when i had more sights. lately i played it again. i used seeing ai or other OCR app on iphone to read books and conversations and perk tree. i used skyUI for static UI inventory and i had some mods for contrast, brightness. i let my followers to fight if enemy didnt come to me. but you might have problem when you have to find items on the table. its not accessible for totally blind users yet. i hope we will be able to enjoy it in the future.

THIS is the kinda thing I was wanting to know. :)
I also discovered the world of mods for Skyrim on Xbox and they’ve helped a lot.
I even found sound that made the soundscape more “immersive” which may help with telling what I’m fighting, helps hearing footsteps and things like that.
It said in the description it even have different sounds for picking up different items so I’m interested to find out if it works.

It honestly really depends on the game but I don’t think the games you listed are necessarily accessible at the moment although you might be able to find mods to make them kind of playable you would still struggle through them if that makes sense screen readers basically are just meant for reading text so text heavy games seem to be very doable for example with NVDA you can download an add-on called lien which will periodically take screenshots of your display extract the text and read it to you in real time so the game genre visual novel is basically entirely playable with this system which has hundreds thousands tens of thousands of games at your disposal but these are just text games as I said and a lot of them tend to be Japanese so it’s a little difficult to find where to purchase them in some instances Steam is a good platform to look into, though. That being said, there are some games that lion mix playable or semi playable one game I’m currently playing as path of exile which, after tweaking a few settings in the game, does become semi-playable but it is a no way 100% playable without a friend helping you out if that makes sense while screen readers seem to have come along way from the research I’ve done they are the magic bullet to make all games playable but what might be in the future is AI, so keep your eyes peeled on that AI assistance in single player games would be amazing for people like us
