People who have travelled independently. Where did you go and what did you do? (self.Blind)
submitted by liamjh27
I’m turning 30 this week and lately I’ve been really getting the itch to do some travelling and just try and do a bit more. I’ve never been abroad by myself before though and I’m wondering how people have managed, where did you go and what did you do? Looking for any cool suggestions to think about. :)

Went to 6 different states in the east coast or eastern seaboard of the us.

New york I saw the statue of liberty, ellis island, the United nations, and I had some new york pizza. I stood at ground zero but couldn’t go in to the museum. I couldn’t get any help there.

I stayd in new jersey and mostly visited people. Had a good few great bagels.

Pennsylvania or philly in specific went to have a philly cheese stake, liberty bell, independence hall, a U.s. mint, all that in one day.

all of these places all 6 actually I experienced the transport, okay besides virginia. So 5 states.

Baltimore maryland went to the nfb headquarters just to visit and see what it is like.

Virginia I went to mount vernon

Washington d.c. briefly the bible museum but they didn’t have any guides, the bureau of engraving where they make all of the bills the mint I mentioned in philly earlier is where they make all of our u.s. coins. Lincoln’s summer home or lincoln’s cottage, the capitol, inside the white house, library of congress, supreme court but only the first floor second floor was under construction at the time, I had some crab in d.c. it was pretty good,

Yea, I think that’s about it.

I did this on my own and I am totally blind.

I made a couple trips by myself, but most of the time my wife goes with me.

The solo trips have never been a problem. The airport staff, the airline staff, and even my fellow passengers have all gone out of their way to make sure I get to the next gate for my connecting flights. The white cane works miracles in an airport.

Headed to Pennsylvania next to see my daughter, then back to Tennessee this summer to water ski. If the drought ends I'd like to visit Yosemite Falls. Come to think of it, it's been far too long since I've visited a waterfall. I should make some plans.

To many times to write about.

I have taken long haul international plane flights solo. The thing is, taking the flight is the easy part, doing stuff in an unfamiliar city is the tricky thing. If you speak the language it's usually quite manageable. If you don't then well you're in trouble just like anyone else would be!

I've written big long posts about it before but basically it's a matter of planning everything, having a backup plan, and taking a problem solving attitude. I meet the best people when I'm travelling.

And never let them put you in a wheelchair!

I've been wondering the same thing. In the absence of a travelling companion or friends / family to visit at my destination, right now my plans for solo holidays involved a pretty controlled environment: cruise ship, resort, and the like. There are some travel companies that cater to visually impaired clients, iirc they have resorts and excursions, and the staff will accompany you to the beach. They even have an arm brace you can buy so you can have them by the arm, without actually having them by the arm and thus able to immerse yourself more.

I've only flown with low vision for one trip, and my experience at the airports I travelled in was not my fave. I had to sit and wait in one spot waiting over an hour for a staff member to escort me to my gate once I was past security. Didn't know where the washroom was, no ability to get food or just walk around a bit. Roaming around airports during layovers was actually one of my fave parts of travel. ETA: I think it was at Dulles, they deposited me at my gate where I wated a while, then heard a snippet of my flight number on the speakers and they'd changed the gate but no one was at my location, at that gate, so I had to wandedr around to try to find someone who could help make sure I was at the correct gate. This was pretty unpleasant for me, the airport part, but I have some other health conditions that can leave me more sensitive to this type of situation.

I’m from the UK, I travelled to the south to see a friend for a week and I’m hoping to go back next year sometime to see another friend. I didn’t do much in that week, mostly eat food and play video games but it was fun.
