what is this black speaker device for? seen it connected to an old braillenote once.(self.Blind)

Was curious as I seen similar setups on note takers several times over the years.
It was this little black speaker about the size of a fistmic like truckers use on a CB, interfaced to one of the og braillenote models. It had a switch on the side I believe and produced a tone when you flipped it. I think it was atached to the strap of the machine. I think it was bluetooth capable.
What exactly would something like this be used for?
Thanks guys!

Its probably a Bluetooth Braille reader? Like you hook it up to whatever youre taking notes with and it’ll read the notes outloud with TTS! You could also take it to a lighthouse or O&M place for more info on how to use it if youre blind

A speaker not sure what you are talking about on the older units you could get a gps blutooth receiver. But other than that I am not sure.

My guess is a GPS receiver. You could hook old receivers to the BrailleNote through a serial cable and use Sendero GPS to have the BrailleNote give you directions and nearby points of interest. Most people would clip the small box that was the receiver to the shoulder strap of the BrailleNote, then run the cable down the strap and around to the back of the notetaker. This kept the receiver out of the way while still letting it see the sky so it could get signals from the GPS satellites.

gotcha!
Makes sense
I am legally blind and have been getting into ham radio stuff etc and just remembered this and got curious.
It was years and years ago I seen this at expos and whatnot
It amazes me how far we have come with tech.
oddly enough there appeare to be a lot of blind indeviduals interested in ham radio too
who knows man maybe some day they'll take some of that old obsolete tech and use it on APRS
I didnt even know you could do the gps on braillenote I thought it was only on pacmate.
I always wanted to try it out but never could get my pacmate to work with the app back in the day. My school was too poor to get me the extra modules like wifi etc for my machine. So always ended up borrowing my vision teachers equipment
Any modern navegation apps that can work with samsung galaxy s9+?
thanks again!
Might need to open a new thread on that subject alone.
