Approximately 90% of people with vision loss still have some vision. How much they can see depends highly on their eye condition and their medical care (for example, cataract surgery is a relatively common in North America, while much less common in some other parts of the world).

Glaucoma often causes tunnel vision over time.

Macular degeneration damages the central vision, and can lead to dark splotches in the middle of someone's vision.

In some cases (current estimates range from 20% to 35%), someone with vision loss might experience something called Charles Bonnet Syndrome, where the brain reacts to the vision loss with hallucinations. The research indicates that this might actually be under-reported because people are afraid others will think they are crazy. They are not, it is the brain's reaction to a major loss of stimulation. But it can be disturbing for some people (one of my clients would hallucinate there is a cliff in front of him, which made walking down the hallway a very unsettling process).

As no one has answered you, I thought I’d weigh in to maybe cure a little of the curiosity- Most ‘blind’ people aren’t actually 100% blind so light still hits the retina. The white dots that you are seeing are likely from the vitreous. Little fibres break off over time to give the impression of ‘floaters’ so most blind people will likely see the same when eyes are closed. As for 100% blind people, I couldn’t be sure so someone else would have to chime in for that.
