Help with voice activated video library and audio description files for movies/TV shows? (self.Blind)
submitted by BenderRodriguez14
I'm fully cited, but my older sister is entirely blind. She has a collection of provwvlyvthousandsmkd TV shows and movies, but we've always found it very difficult to find audio descriptions of what is happening in the scene in them.

I am toying swth the idea of ripping her entire library to a computer with a a LOT of storage because she has mental capacity issues which means ANYTHING out of this ludicrous collection being out of place can cause a meltdown, and have two questions I am hoping someone might be able to help me eith:

1. Is there a depository anywhere of audio files for movies and TV shows that include audio descriptions, be they official or third party? Or just places to piecemeal together a collection to get working in?

2. Does anyone know or have any links to guides to set up voice activation for a video library /or of Alex's etc. can? E.g "Computer, play Stanger things Season 1 Episode... Computer, play audio description track.."

Im aware this is a GARGANTUAN task ahead, but any help would be hugely appreciated for any help, tips or pointers!

Edit: huge thanks to all that helped out, as Murphy's Law would have it my computer completely bricked it literally today but I'll be quick in this as soon as I get the new one (already ordered) in. In the meantime I've an old potato to download the audio vault stuff too so, thanks, again!!

$1 is a subscription service which will index your media and allow voice-controlled playback on compatible smart speakers or Alexa apps.
The basic plan costs about 5 bucks a year and the server needn't be on a local computer; I've got ours running on a Raspberry Pi zero w (less than £10), with a 512GB card. Audiodescribed TV and film obviously can work without picture, rendering a typical episode of a show down to about 70 MB.
I tag TV series as audiobooks as far as mymedia is concerned, so it keeps your place in the season. Adding more episodes is just a copy and paste job, or a shell in and wget if I have a clear URL. I don't use it much anymore because all the stuff I watch is described on terrestrial or paid-for TV here in theUK and I watch with sighted family who want pictures, bless them

In terms of voice activation, most blind people learn to use a screen reader of some sort on whichever device they want to use. I work with blind people with all sorts of mental capacities - I teach algorithm design one day, how to cursor through a list of emails the next.
obviously you know your family better than us, but if you're just assuming can't see the screen so talk to it, please reconsider.

There are some great websites and apps that have thousands of tv show and movie tracks with audio description. You can visit https://audiovault.net/ and search through their database.

Our favorite is the app Sero. It does cost about $6 a month but is 100% worth the cost since we love movies! It’s a super easy search feature, you find what you want and hit play. It’s awesome.

Other than that, many streaming services have audio description such as Disney+ (one of the best), Netflix (also one of the best), Amazon (getting better!), Hulu (I think there’s some but not 100% sure), and HBOMax (getting better!)

Sero's files come from Audiovault. If you're pirating these files, you might as well not pay for them when a free option is available.

I figured that might be the case since they have essentially the same tracks. As far as being user friendly, Sero works much better for us so the $6 is worth it. But for the op, yeah definitely go for audiovault since it’s free.
