is it normal to losing interest in hobbies so fast when you partially blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by tndarius
I bought a digital piano in 2019. I was 28 at that time. Feeling so excited to learn new skills that nothing to do with job during pandemic. I gain new skills and it improve my mental health as well. Fast forward 2 years later, now I'm losing interest to play. I sold the piano due to financial situation and the thought of its too late to play the instrument when you're already 30. I got burned out so fast. I'm not sure if that due to my vision, financial situation that's been taking toll of my mental health or depression. I'm no longer missing my piano skills that I used to be proud of. I'm now focusing to improve my financial situation by getting a better paying job. But at the same time I'm feeling empty for not having anymore hobbies or interest because it shifted as I ages. Anyone else feels the same?

Depression will definately cause a loss of interest in hobbies and activities. Add to that the stress that comes with financial issues and vision loss, and you have yourself a perfect storm.

Consider checking into free or sliding scale counseling services. Are you in the US? I am currently receiving services from Catholic Charities for situational depression due to my rapid vision loss. You do NOT have to be Catholic to receive these services. They don't even ask about church affiliations. However, not all Catholic Charity divisions offer counseling.

It has helpe me.

As to hobbies, I encourage you to start small. What kind of things do you enjoy? Download a library audiobook (free) on a subject that interests you.

Seeking help just means they're going to give you pills now. I'm depressed too but am hung up on whether I really want to start taking Zoloft or whatever again.

Not always but yeah, the bad ones. Run for it if they do.

I am not currently on meds. Not all counselors go there. However, I do know people form whom certain depression and anxiety meds have been life-changing,

You can always decide after you find a counselor who you trust.

Sounds like depression or something like that.

Nothing that being blind inherently makes you lose interest or burn out with things. It’s not blind related if you do.

Yeah, I second this, only thing I have found being blind has done is make me more tired.
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
Hahaha! Sometimes not tired enough but sometimes it can be especially since sometimes we have to focus. More on things.

I'd say, it takes at least 5,000 hours of concentrated practise in order to operate the piano reasonably competently, no matter your age. That is a dedication that not everyone can afford, let alone while going through what you're likely going through right now.

I don't think that you failed, it was just the wrong thing at the wrong time. So don't sweat it, you'll find something else.

I was born blind, I’m going to buy a native instruments keyboard because it has blind accessibility built in.

I think that as we get older are hobbies change, but you could try and learn piano again if you wanted to.
