Possible Solution to my Ongoing Problem or Alternative NVDA Accessible Word Processor to Replace Jarte (self.Blind)
submitted by RobLBrownBlind

I'm desperate to know if anyone knows of any good word processors that are accessible, especially with NVDA.

I used to use Microsoft Word all the time, but I screwed up the settings somehow when I bought my current laptop (Windows 10) back in 2018. I haven't been able to fix it, and to be honest I wasn't happy with the bloated mess Word has become. I haven't been happy with Word since roughly 2013 to be perfect honest.

For the past few years I've been working with Jarte, which I do love, but I've noticed a huge problem with Jarte that I am unable to fix. When writing or editing large documents (novel or textbook length for example), a lot of times lines or whole paragraphs will randomly duplicate, while parts of the original line or paragraph will appear to blur with one another or disappear outright for a little while. I haven't been able to figure out a way to fix it, and the people who made Jarte are no longer offering support of any kind.

Hence why I'm looking for an alternative word processor for my current one. Unless, of course, anyone reading this reckonizes my problem and knows how to solve it once and for all.

Thank you for reading this and hopefully have some ideas and/or recommendations for me!

This might sound a bit odd but I use vscode and write most of my documents in markdown. Rendered markdown seems to work great for authoring documents to work with screen readers like NVDA/JAWS. Wikipedia is rendered markdown if you need an example of what things written in markdown can look like. I only use the online versions of Word or Outlook when I need grammar suggestion or spelling help beyond the simple spell check extension available in vscode.

I second Markdown. I write everything in Notepad++, and then I convert it to word format with Pandoc.

Google Docs has gotten pretty usable over the last year or so.

I second this. I use it every day for work. Pretty decent. Is a little annoying to navigate with large documents. But if you use lots of headings not too bad

I use word, all the time. I can't live without word, LOL!

May be reinstalling your MS office can fix the settings problem you talked about. Nothing in my opinion, comes close to word, when it's about document editing. I've tried alternatives, but still use word. Plus, it's widely installed on every windows computer, so most of keyboard shortcuts apply everywhere.
