Blind Inc (self.Blind)
submitted by Snookerdee3
Looking to hear experiences from the students of blind Inc. in Minnesota. I’m considering attending the program because as a 23 year old person Who is blind my independent living skills are not at the level they should be at due to me growing up in a very sheltered environment. In Wisconsin where I live there is no intensive rehab training facility for the blind and visually impaired so blind Inc. I feel is my best option to greatly increase my independence

I would think Wisconsin would have a state sponsored center.
Saying that I went through the program and didn’t finish the training program,
I did finish my small and large meals,
Even though I did finish home management I still hate cooking and don’t have the patience for it. My husband does all the cooking will help out occasionally when he asks,

I did finish my 3 industrial art projects.
Cedarwood box starting off with hand tools
Tool box done with power tools , various uses of electric saws.
Personal jewelry chest done with power tools including electrical saws..

O&M
I didn’t finish o and M since I’m shit with a cane and was a guide dog user while I was there.
Also had hearing loss while there and did not have hearing aids so could not hear my environment safely so intern did not trust sleep shades while traveling

I didn’t like the unwritten rule if you had a guide dog upstairs and there was a fire or evacuation that you had to leave the dog .
The staff said I was the most adamant about bringing my guide dog to student events where possible

Braille class
I learned grade 1 and grade 2 English braille, but for me it was a waste of time, since because of my learning disability I didn’t understand or remember what I was reading. I’m a more auditory person.
Did progress to reading with braille display since I could not feel braille when it was written on paper
Technology class
I did benefit from this part of the training with learning macOS a lot better.

The teacher Helen Dash was a Mac user herself and was a great help learning macOS.

Jobs-
Was just a waste of time, since I didn’t plan on finding more employment.

The thing is I already know grade 1 and 2 Braille and I’m sufficient in using my iPhone every day. My weak points are cooking and laundry. My biggest concern is that the program would not benefit me enough to be worth uprooting my life in Wisconsin for 6 months. I also have a few medical conditions that are being monitored here and I’m in behavioral therapy yeah and psychiatry ideally I would Love to be able to learn how to cook and do laundry here at home.

Have you looked at a independent living skills teacher?

I had one of them in high school to teach me basic skills

There usually in community

I’m currently working with the rehabilitation specialist from the office for the blind and visually impaired in my area but my grandmother who I live with won’t let her come to my house to teach me cooking skills

What is Blind Inc? I thought it's some company.

Seems like a training program? I'll search.

That’s right. Blind inc is one of the three centers that the NFb hosts.

I would say there are others but they may not be as close but they are the same as blind inc like louisiana and colorado

I might be bias because I went there, but I think Blind Inc. is one of the best training programs out there. Obviously it's not perfect, but no program will be.

There main classes include travel, cooking, and technology/Braille. There is also careers, industrial arts, home maintenance, fitness, and more. Furthermore, they do weekly inspections at the place you live to make sure you're keeping on top of general cleaning.

The skills I learned made me way more independent than I was.
