Discord Accessibility: Action! (self.Blind)
submitted by tasareinspace
Good morning folks!

So Discord's latest update makes enlarged text broken, you can't see the channels on servers anymore. I found a post about this on their accessibility forum, and I'm hoping to get a lot of upvotes/comments on it so that Discord pays attention to it.

(note: I didn't make the post myself, but I think that its important!)

Please upvote or comment if you can!

I’m not having an issue with it on IOS? The text is still viewable for and I can slide to read it when it goes off the page. The alt text for image is also working for mobile as long as I have voice over turned on.

I just save myself the headache by never using Discord in the first place.

Discord works fine. Not everythings a hundred percent, and thats life.

I agree.

It’s actually not that bad, at least not the screen reader iphone side if you’re a total. And they seem to demonstrate they want to fix accessibility. I took your stance a while ago but decided to try it, upon insistence of many people. Okay, the largest factor was work, but eh, there was definitely other reasons. It seems to be decent at least.

Is it peachy and 100% no, but you also shouldn’t have trouble.

Yeah, Discord has come a loooooooooong way in the past couple years in terms of accessibility. I remember when it was still all unlabeled for screenreaders.
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, I remember that and I could barely navigate it so I gave up.

Yep, though I will say they do have a weird knack for breaking stuff out of nowhere, but usually fix it rather fast. Some of the still ongoing issues on iOS can be improved by making sure images are not automatically loading as that seems to be causing some crashing bugs.

That’s good.

Even on the iPone it's a pretty poorly designed experience. The only group I'm part of has a lot of media sharing from members, so photos/videos, and none of those show up in the chatrooms for me. Not even focusable objects that I can run image detection on or save for SeeingAI, etc.

OK yeah ignore my previous comment if you’re on iPhone the iPhone experience on Discord is absolutely horrendous compared to NVDA on a Windows PC in my experience. Like probably one of the worst apps I’ve ever used for accessibility on iPhone one example of something that is really really really irritating is the fact that even if you focus on the dictate button while your keyboard is open for some reason it will occasionally target the open drawer button and even worse sometimes it’s delayed so you’ll think that you’re hovering over the dictate button and then when you double tap to activate it’ll quickly switch to the open drawer button and then it will totally fuck you up and you’ll have to go back into the conversation you were originally in and try again, sometimes the keyboard seems to have interact double elements even though it’s supposed to be hidden and this isn’t even a problem for voice over my sighted friends have had this happen on their iPhones as well where they will be in a conversation and they will randomly somehow defend themselves even though there are no elements available on the in call menu for one on one conversations to death and yourself, it’s just a very buggy experience on phones especially with a voiceover but on PC it’s pretty nice

Yeah Android it's great, Windows it's as good or better, MacOS isn’t the best, and iOS is about the same or worse, Linux is pretty bad too I think.

Yeah, the media sharing it may be a bad experience. The only thing I don’t like so far is can’t seem to scroll through the chat that easily unless you go to the end or flick through or something or it doesn’t tell you it’s going.

I wonder if discord would fix that.

I’m gonna be honest I’m not sure where the heat for discord comes from it has a quick switch or option to shoot you to any channel in any server or any DM conversation, you can use the landmark hotkey to jump between server-side bar, the server details such as voice and chat channels, you can start a voice call in a DM conversation with the Ctrl plus apostrophe hotkey, there are quite a lot of accessibility features that I don’t really find myself ever being held back on Discord at all in fact I’m usually a little faster than I’ve cited friends that using the app so long as you research the hotkeys and everything it’s really not a bad experience at all there are programs are much much worse I find it to be one of the better ones

I think it's probably in part that they took a long time to be really accessible especially on Apple products from my understanding, there is also the inconsistent functionality between platforms, last I knew the iOS version still did not have navigation landmarks for most things, whereas the Android one has some things that as far as I know are not yet on anything else.
