Business Partner with Vision Loss (self.Blind)
submitted by JumpingGodzilla
A partner where I work has macular degeneration. The progress of the disease has been halted by regular medication. They can walk around, but reading and writing is very difficult. As a result, various younger employees sit with them and help all or most of the day. Yes, the young people are learning, but it is not efficient and not how they envision their careers. We have less than 20 employees.
Is there a government program to reimburse a portion of the time spent helping the partner?

You're taking the wrong approach here. You need to hook this person up with a rehab specialist to train them on the use of accessible technology so they can work independently.

It sounds like he needs life skills / accessible tech training.

Is this reading physical documents that cannot be digitized? Is handwriting required? Because if the documents can be digitized, it sounds like work your business partner could do on their own with the right technology. Computers have accessibility features built in, like a screen reader or screen magnifier. Or there is third-party software, that sometimes has more features. Touch typing does not require vision. With some technology training and the right software, I’m sure your business partner could do most of this work without help.

Unfortunately, I can’t help you with where to get that training, or cover third-party software costs, as I’m in Canada, but there are often government or non-profit programs to help with this sort of thing.

For your business to be productive again this person must transfer to assistive technology. There is plenty of technologies if they so choose to aid in this. There are trainers for assistive technology as well.

This is not a productive way to work and at this point he is being more of a liability than an asset unless he’s willing to adapt and learn to operate a computer or other devices independently.
