Haha funny story-- I started rapidly going blind 10 weeks ago, and I was explaining my AZOOR to some of the girls I know at the Walmart. One of them asked if I was gonna learn Braille and I commented that I'm going on 40, I already know 3 languages and I hardly about to learn a 4th. They ask what languages I know and I reply English, Spanish and ASL. One of the girls said something to the effect of "oh, well the sign language will be really helpful when you totally go blind then!"
My husband Lost. His. Shit. laughing at that, and I only caught it a couple beats later and about died laughing, too, as she asked what was funny. One of the other girls managed to choke out, "that's for DEAF people! How the hell she gonna see fucking sign language!?"
Still makes me laugh a month later!

Well, contrary to ASL braille wouldn't really be a full language, just a different "font". The hard part is practicing your sense of touch in the fingertips, the language would still be english for example :).

Yeah, that's fair. I reckon it'd be more akin to when I learned Morse as a kid; I might give it a try, I don't know, I picked Morse up fast but I was a kid when I learned it.

For me it's often almost meditative and it enables me to read while listening to music, I really like that. So I can recommend it!

Comparing it to Morse code is a good way to think of it, and there are free apps to help if you still have some vision and Hadley will send you the starting course too.

You could learn the basics of Braille and do a lot with it. Labeling stuff at home and work can be quite handy.

har, the poor lady meant well but golly what a gaffe. ^_^. I felt pretty indifferent to learning Braille, but now my brain's finally emerging from the fog of rewiring everything, I've gotten keen to pick up this skill.

I hate to do this but here we go...

When all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail. These people know of one solution for sensory disability so they try to apply it to every thing.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess there was no date after this.

I get that sometime oh you’re blind you know sign language?
I’ve also heard that at one point a deaf guy walked over to a counter somewhere or some booth. They identified themselves as deaf and this person got excited. Ooo. Well we got the thing just for you!
So they pulled out a braille book.

Reminds me of when I got offered glasses that have closed captioning at the movie theater when they saw my cane.
Like uhm thanks?
But funny enough with my spot of central vision that miiiight help me if it was a foreign movie and I needed subtitles. Which would likely be a funny conversation if I had to go ask for them.

I had a similar experience. I went and asked for the audio description device, ten minutes later, they hand me the closed captioning device and I’m like “whaaaa?” I said that I was blind (I had my cane in hand) and they were just mystified as to why the closed captioning device would not work for me.
bradley224 points1y ago
They must be joking, right?
PrincessDie1233 points1y ago
Nah it’s extremely common for people to mix the two up lol. Lots of people shout at me so I can see them better it’s some sort of cognitive disconnect deaf people get handed Braille menus frequently too I hear.
bradley222 points1y ago

Oh man. I haven't been on dating apps for a few years as I'm now in a long-term relationship. They were "something else, that's for sure.

r_12351 points1y ago
Huh,
The captioning is a bit confusing. Didn't understand the conversation. Any ways, I am also a blind guy, wanting to learn sign language, any suggestions?
EquivalentFishing1 points1y ago
What dating site are you using, is there any good one that is fully accessible?
FoxComprehensive2204 [OP]1 points1y ago
i’m using an app called bumble, deff not fully but fairly acsessable.
EquivalentFishing2 points1y ago
Sorry for questions, my dad is fully blind and exploring options with him. How focused on pictures is it, or is there substantial profiles and descriptions too?
FoxComprehensive2204 [OP]1 points1y ago
More than happy to help
FoxComprehensive2204 [OP]1 points1y ago
honestly if I have no vision it will be extremely challenging.
Because he needs to set pictures and things but if you were to do that for him the screen reader will read out loud the current and on their profile
paneulo1 points1y ago
Sounds like a keeper.
