For those of you on PCs, do you keep your monitor turned on? If so, why? (self.Blind)
submitted by ChipsAhoiMcCoy
I was thinking about this today, and while I don't necessarily have no vision at all, I have very little to no detail and am bordering light perception only. I was thinking, why bother wasting power keeping my 120Hz 2k monitor plugged in when I could simply just keep it turned off and save the power anyways? It's not like I gain that much information from the visuals, and I've grown accustomed to using a screen reader, so I can't seem to think of why I should keep my monitor on, but was curious about your experiences.

you can also use dummy monitor connectors that plug into the back of a desktop computer, to make it 'headless', you dont really even need to waste desk space for a monitor if you dont want to.

nope. Screen curtain on phone and laptop, and monitor off unless I'm physically with someone. Screen sharing and printscreen don't require a physical monitor.

That's interesting, I thought you needed to have it turned off when screen sharing? When I use TeamViewer, I've been told that when sharing my screen and screen curtain is on, no one can see my screen.

depends on the app and the load chain I think. If I turn it off and on again during a Zoom, for example, it does go off. But if I start a Google Meet with it on, the screen is still shared

I use screen curtain on my iPhone and have the brightness set to 0 on my laptop

I don't use any desktop computers, have laptops.

One cool trick with one of my laptops is that I can put it on charging, turn it on, connect via a bluetooth keyboard, and shut the laptop lid. It turns off the screen, but remains on. So, a windows laptop, much like an headless installation. Haven't managed to make it happen on battery power though.

I know that I can change the power options to make it so that it doesn't go to sleep or whatever when I close the lid, but, I've noticed that while doing that, the screen remains on.

I leave mine on when I'm alone as a comfort thing

Most of my coworkers using screen readers turn the screen off. Sometimes IT turns the monitor back on to do something, and then I mention to my coworker the monitor is on when I notice it later.

A blind acquaintance of mine keeps his laptop screen always off. One time I had to help him with some computer stuff(I am sighted enough to use displays and such) and he had to turn it on for me.

I know I can turn it off using NVDA, but I’ve never done it and doubt I will in the future.

On my laptop I turn on the screen curtain on nvda and on my iPhone I always have the screen curtain on VoiceOver

Yep have screen hidden on my phone, have not used my laptop in ages but that would be how I’d do it as well.

I think I just had it on because. It was on and it was easy enough to keep it on. When I had one. I suppose I don’t actually need a monitor though.

I keep it off. I only turn it on if I need sighted help for something.
