Do we have a subreddit for blind parents? (self.Blind)
submitted by anonymombie
Hi, all! I'm fairly new to Reddit, but I'm trying to do away with Facebook completely. The only reason I still have my account is because I find the groups for blind parenting to be quite helpful. Do we have anything like that here? If not, would there be an interest in it?

Perhaps this blindness sub could do a tag that says Blind Parenting.

I have added a "Parenting" flair. I am willing to edit if there is a desire to split "Parenting while blind" and "Parenting blind children"

I think your suggestion is good. Blind parents and Parents of blind children are good flairs.

Imeant a flair.

Yeah, was not a fan of the FB parenting groups myself, don’t think there's a sub for that but there have been plenty of posts from blind parents here. The r/blind discord server also is a good place to discuss stuff as well. I do not see much need for a standalone sub for this though.

So what, exactly is Discord?
DHamlinMusic 3 points 1y ago
Chat platform, we have regular voice events, casual just hang and talk text chat, topic specific rooms, etc. The link can be found in the sidebar.

I've seen that link quite a bit, I just didn't know what it was. Thanks for this.

I participate quite a bit in the Parents sub in Reddit, but I don’t tell them I’m blind. For blindness related stuff I use Blind Parents Connect and Blind Parents Alliance on FB.

I'm actually a member of those groups, too, and I like them quite a bit, but I'd like to get off Facebook so I'm hoping to find good alternatives. I wish Reddit was as popular among the blind as Facebook is.
DHamlinMusic 2 points 1y ago
Yeah I left both those groups after having my blindness questioned multiple times when I disagreed with someone or pointed out incorrect info, found both to be incredibly toxic and hostile.

You're right about that, for sure. I remember back when I was struggling to make formula correctly, because some things that are difficult for others are not for someone else. A lot of people attacked me saying I was overthinking it, and that if it was a little off, the baby would be fine. They didn't take serious sleep deprivation into account, and the fact that there were several days I'd go 48 hours without sleep. I ended up buying a talking scale, and as it turns out? It wasn't just a little off, but a lot off. Man, oh man! Those newborn days were so hard! It seems like there's always someone around to tell you how you're not doing blindness right.
DHamlinMusic 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, and in my case luckily my fiance is sighted and she handles making the formula, which is good cause it's special instructions cause our daughter was 6.5 weeks premature.

Ohhh, that's challenging for sure. My little love was 3 weeks early, and we had some feeding issues in the beginning. I sure don't miss it, let me tell you.

Have you looked into the Baby Brezza formula mixer pro? It’s a machine that heats the water, measures the power, and mixes it for you. I think it’s pretty accessible, especially if your wife could do the initial setup of programming it to your specific formula. All you would need to do is press the button to get it to dispense, and then every 4 bottles you remove the funnel, wash it, and slide it back in.

There is a cortical Visual impairment sub with a focus on parents and caregivers, but it's had no traction at all.

It's called r/CVIsupportcommunity

There is also r/deafblindsupport community for dual diognosis

It would be great to see a parent community if it could get traction.

Note that both subs are linked to sister subs for adults, but only r/deafblind sees much action.
