NVDA shortcut keys not working (self.Blind)
submitted by ilovebrownbutter
1. Shortcut keys turn on: My NVDA shortcut keys aren't working. It doesn't open when I click Ctrl+Alt+N. It used to, but once I updated it now it doesn't for some reason.

2. Shortcut within NVDA being open. When I am using it the shortcut keys also don't work. I mean, H works, but I want the list of elements and it doesn't open when I do INS+FN+F7 the fn is to activate the f7 key. A message pops up saying "Activate cursor navigation?"

3. I can't install a voice even though it's installed, it's not showing up in the list of possible voices to use when I'm setting up what voice I want. It only has the default two.

Sorry, I'm a beginner. If there is a better place to ask this let me know too. Thank you!

Windows: Windows 8.1

NVDA: 2022.1

1. The desktop shortcut has presumably lost its shorrtcut key.
a. Press windows+m for desktop and N until you get to the NVDA icon.
b. Press alt+enter for properties, then alt+k for Shortcut Key, then CTRL+alt+n to set the shortcut you want.

2. caret browsing is accessed with F7. the NVDA key (insert or caps-lock) plus f7 will bring up the elements list only if you are in browse mode (NVDA plus space). It's also worth locking your function keys if you can, we as screen reader users rely on the f keys far more than mouse users. fn+escape is a commmon lock command but it varies by computer model.

3. Voices belong to speech synthehsizers. You generally instal a synthesizer or its driver first, and optionally voices for it if they're packaged separately. Some synthesizers require setup in NVDA preferences before they show up in the list. You can't change to the voice you want until you've chosen the right synthesizer, changed through the change button in NVDA preferences -> settings -> speech, or with CTRL+NVDA+s.

Also worth noting that mainstream support for Windows 8 ended in January 2018, and extended support will end January next year.

Perfect, thank you so much. That was all very helpful. I was able to lock by clicking num lock on my keyboard. I must have clicked there accidentaly sometime and then it wasn't locking anymore.

Thank you!

ah, insert is also the numpad 0 on some keyboards, so that might explain it. :)
