Have any of you heard of the Tanvas display? (self.Blind)
submitted by ChipsAhoiMcCoy
I've been researching some solutions that might make gaming easier for me as a blind individual, and I came across Tanvas and Dot Pad in my research. Dot Pad seems really interesting, but Tanvas is also quite interesting as well, especially since it is touch screen. Do any of you here know anything about Tanvas in particular? Most of the demos that I'm seeing involve premade images/textures as opposed to actual OS use, so I'm thinking that you may n ot be able to use this for Windows to play video games, but w as curious what you guys thought as well.

I have a Tanvas haptic touch screen, and I’ve had a blind friend and advisor test some custom interfaces I wrote for it.

In early 2020, to create the haptic effect it was necessary to generate an image representing the intensity of the “static cling” haptic effect. That is, it was necessary to create the haptic effects from scratch.

The last I knew, there was no direct support to render the Windows OS using haptics. The resolution of a visual interface is much, much finer than the effective resolution of a haptic interface. For example, the Tanvas doesn’t have fine enough resolution to generate a Braille cell.

Unfortunately the in-person testing I was conducting using the Tanvas screen was interrupted by the pandemic, and I had to redirect my business to other work.

That's super unfortunate that the tanvas isn't able to generate touch areas in realtime, but hopefully in the future this will be a reality, as it would be gamechanging for the blind world. And hey, thank you for trying something liket his out. People like you are going to make my life more bearable in the future, and I couldn't thank you enough. (:

If you ever need someone to test any ideas out for you, I would always be open to giving anything a shot. Thanks for commenting!

Some day I’ll have to list all the equipment I have for testing. Ha ha.

And thanks! I’m always happy for more testers. Most testers for my company are remote, but folks in the Boston area can do in-person testing.

The BVI community in Boston has been supportive and helpful, and of course I’ve pulled members of the community into the team.

My company has a long-delayed app coming out soonish. Development for a different project delayed the release of the app.

There’s lots of interrelated work planned after that, including some haptics-related projects.

Haptics are tricky, but after buying devices and tinkering I think I’ve identified a good use for them. More on that subject another time.

Well all the best to you my friend! It's an exciting world we live in right now, and keeping up with technology has definitely made it more exciting for me.
