I really wish there were places for the blind in London to learn living skills. (self.Blind)

My wife and I planned to set something like this up if we ever won the lottory. an intense living experience, with braille or Access tech if needful, shopping, sightseeing, local entertainment and activities, running the home etc. If you miss out as a child you're buggered here.
bradley22 7 points 1y ago
Exactly! People talk about the NHS and things, and they’re good, and sometimes us Brits do shit on Americans, but they’ve definitely got it right when it comes to blind people.
retrolental_morose 6 points 1y ago
Oh I wouldn't go that far, I can't name many American friends with my quality of life, particularly if their church or best friends were pulled away.
most of them struggle with decent mass transit and the like. At least here we have everything a few hours away at most, the continental US is huge.
bradley22 3 points 1y ago
That’s true.

although perhaps I'm biased a little; i've been stuck at home for a week with Covid. I've just done a 13 mile cycle on the exercise bike during a tennis match on TV and can't wait to go back to work tomorrow; the house and garden seem sooo restrictive when you literally can't leave them!

Hi

The RNIB will help you. They have a centre at Loughborough, Leicestershire, UK and there is another centre in Hertfordshire. These centres offer living skills over a 6 to 8 week period. They are also residential so you don't have to travel home each day.

I went to RNIB Loughborough and loved it. I then went onto successfully completing a college course that took me into Loughborough University.

I hope this helps and best of luck.
bradley22 3 points 1y ago
Can you find me a website for that? I just tried to look and couldn’t find anything.
MostlyBlindGamer 6 points 1y ago
This is certainly not the same thing as a camp for kids and I can't personally vouch for them, but you can go to the $1

They might even have a camp, who knows?
bradley22 7 points 1y ago
I’m not a kid :-) I’m 28. But I know that the RNIB don’t have a camp.

There is one more charity thing for the blind where they take you out for activities, but I can’t remember what it’s called right now. I think it’s the CNIB or something.

CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) does run summer camp for kids. I'll be helping them out in July with some teenagers. They also run some workshops for adults.

The rehabilitation part got rebranded as VLRC (Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada) because it got rolled into the health care system.
bradley22 3 points 1y ago
Ah, it's called VICTA, oops.
bradley22 3 points 1y ago
Cool... But that's not what I'm talking about :P
MostlyBlindGamer 4 points 1y ago
Just throwing it out there, because I've missed out on stuff before because I hadn't heard of it.

I do get what you're getting at. What with being somewhere in the middle between sighted and visually impaired, I didn't get a lot of help that I could have used as a kid. Learning Braille as an adult is a lot harder, for instance, but I only learned bump dots were a thing in my late 20s.
bradley22 4 points 1y ago
Well I went to a school for the disabled but they didn't focus that much on living skills and even if they did that wouldn't have really mattered because my grandparents didn't focus on them at all at home.

The Carroll Center for the Blinds programs always had international students because these programs are so rare. You can always talk to someone about seeking financial aid.
bradley22 3 points 1y ago
Thanks but I'd like to stay in London if i can help it.

Have you tried calling Sight Scotland? Their website is https://sightscotland.org.uk/.
I know they’re located in Scotland, but maybe they can provide you with more detailed information for the greater England area. They do offer some services and they have a phone number you can call just to chat with a sympathetic ear.
bradley22 2 points 1y ago
Hey, I dobt Scotland would know about England in that way, but I appreciate the help.
teameadow719 2 points 1y ago
And here I am going to England to learn life skills!
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
Oh? Where are you going? You’ll probably end up going to college as well, that’s not what I want personally.

For what it's worth I went on a residential course and lasted less than two days. That place smelled of cabbage and I have a feeling it was designed to turn you into an RNIB employee with a guide dog who's your best friend and absolutely no other friends.

Bradley I don't know where exactly you're based or what your history with sight loss is, but I'm just outside London and if you'd like to meet up at some point even just to chew the fat then maybe we could make that happen. Normally I would expect to be learning stuff from you if you've been dealing with this all your life. I've only been doing it a couple of decades so you ought to be the expert. But I guess we could compare notes at least.

I can't claim to have lived along with sight loss because I haven't but I'm reasonably confident I could. I have half a dozen different dinners I can cook, don't score me on presentation! On the odd occasion my other half is away from home for a week or so it's been not a big deal. He did say my obsessive compulsive need to put everything back in exactly the right place was sort of obvious when he got in and I'm not sure I'd trust my own hoovering, but honestly it's pretty doable. Depends exactly what you had in mind really.
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
Thanks, honestly would I have to do is wait for my grandparents to die and then I’ll be moving to a small flat and we’ll go from there. I’m honestly completely fine with that, the post was kind of just a little rant.

Sometimes I find if you want opportunities you have to make or find them. And networking helps.
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
Well networking and stuff like that doesn’t really exist here in the UK for this kind of stuff. especially for those who are over 28 I think it is.^
SiriuslyGranger 1 points 1y ago
Ah, well I hope you do find something.
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
Thanks.
SiriuslyGranger 1 points 1y ago
Sure.

How young are you? Look up LOOK uk they run great workshops and I'm sure rnib have to, maybe not residential but they would have to do daily living skills
bradley22 1 points 1y ago
I just looked at Look, they're to young for me, I'm 28, as for the RNIB; I might look into it.
niamhweking 1 points 1y ago
Are LOOK 25? I know they were 20s but couldn't remember their cut off, they could possibly point you in the right direction

bradley22 1 points 1y ago
I had a quick look and I think they’re about 18 to 20-ish?
niamhweking 1 points 1y ago
Not at all, I think from what I found their cut off is 29! You'll just slip in. No harm contacting them and see if they can help. They do focus more on education, 3rd level and help with jobs/careers/interviews but there could be something I'm missing
