What iPhone apps would you recommend for reading bank card info?(self.Blind)
submitted by Raccoon_Tail33
I have Seeing Ai, and although it does read the info on the card, it doesn't always do the best, and it doesn't read the card number. I also tried Envision, but my free trial ended and, not to complain, but I think the subscription is a bit unnecessary. What other apps or methods could I try.
For context, I have some vision, but not enough for taking and reading pictures.

Good news! Starting mid July 2022 the Envision app will be free for iOS and Android. They have made the announcement a couple of different places and they also sent out an email.

Thank goodness!

I'm always curious where people find these announcements? I'm subscribed to so many different tech blogs, and still seem to be behind. In any case, this is welcome news. The Seeing AI app has started to become sluggish for me on more than one phone.

I heard the announcement at first on a podcast from someone that was at the Sight and Sound convention. I am also on Envision newsletter list. Because I pay for the app they sent an email. And they tweeted it out if you follow them on Twitter. They would like people who can to pay whatever they can afford but, no one has to pay if they don’t want to starting mid July 2022. I think it is a good app so I’ll put them in my budget to keep the good work going. I know everyone can’t.

I just started following them on Twitter earlier today. Among every assistive technology company I follow, they weren't one of them.

The iPhone's camera app has an automatic text detection feature as of iOS 15, I think. I've found that it works quite nicely, and if you're having trouble getting it to recognize text instantly? Snap a picture of your card, go to your photos app, look for the picture you just took, then flick up or down to "explore image." It will OCR the text in the picture and read it back to you.

Are you proficient in braille?

The easiest way is to ask a sighted relative

Have you tried voice dream scanner. I place the phone with the camera in the middle of the card and lift it up. Some and then it will either automatically or you can then tap the capture button or the button to take the picture for ocr.

I looked at it, but it isn't free. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Does it have to be free. It’s actually quite a good tool. It’s not terribly expensive either.

Update: the iPhone's camera definitely helped, but I still can't read the raised card number. Though I'm fluent in braille, I can't read the numbers. There's got to be a way around this.

There is, use the wallet settings to add a card to your Apple Pay.
The raised number isn't Braille so that won't help you.
And many OCR tools struggle with embossed and raised numbering and letters, algorithmically they're very different to ink.

Invision AI is going to become free soon. Use that if it works.

The google app has a scanner that will read for everything you point to. But probably I wouldn’t trust sensitive info like bank info with google
retrolental_morose1 points1y ago
use the wallet app itself. you needn't progress with the full add card wizard to read the data.
CVV code may well need sighted help or a lot of trial and error with an OCR-based tool.
Edit for clarity: I mean wallet within settings, as in to add a card with Apple Pay
