Someone posted this on r/wholesome with the title "the blind people will be so happy when they see this!" I believe it was sarcasm but I felt that blind people should be able to have a say, so I am crossposting it. I transcribed the image in a comment. (I'm a sighted person). A picture of someone with both a cane and a guide dog seems to be a go-to for representing a blind person because it crams all the symbols into one picture. Using both at the same time isn’t unheard of, but it is uncommon.

Personally, I don’t understand what this picture is trying to convey. And this may be a difference between Canada and the US. Here, 211 will look up services, organizations, or charities for you (maybe they look up individual phone numbers, too?), and are super helpful. Maybe they are a different service in the States? But I don’t understand what that has to do with electric and gas, or with blind people. What is this partnership? Why is the blind person relevant? What is the point?

In the UK you can register with your utility if you have certain disabilities.

My gas, water electric bills come in enlarged print on A3 size paper, I can also get them in audio form or nominate someone to also get a copy of my bill who can read it to me. My electricity supplier will even send out a free magnifier.

If water is cut off for an extended period, because I have mobility problems they will deliver water to me.

If power is off for an extended period I can get priority support.

They are also generally much more understanding if you are having trouble paying your bills so will work with you more than usual to avoid getting cut off due to non payment.

My guess is the companies are increasing their support for blind and vulnerable customers.

On the bottom left it says "San Diego Gas and Electric and Wildfire Safety". So it seems to be specifically related to wildfire safety. It's very confusing because I don't see how the image relates to wildfire safety in any way. There is no smoke or fire in the picture and the landscape looks normal and untouched by fire. Underneath the man's feet and the guide dog's paws, there is some black / grey colour that looks like perhaps it's intended to be soot. That is the only thing in the picture that hints at fire. I could be wrong and maybe the black stuff isn't soot at all. If it weren't for the reference to wildfire, I wouldn't even have considered the possibility that the black stuff they were standing on might be soot. This image is confusing and unclear even for me as a sighted person!

Hmm, maybe it’s supposed to convey that you can now phone 211 for wildfire information (if you’re blind)? I know California is prone to wildfires.
impablomations 2 points 1y ago
Looking at their website they do appear to be a utility company, as well as managing wildfires. I'm assuming that area has a high prevalence of wildfires which can affect power

Yes it's all a bit cryptic and strange. I don't know either.
Emmenias 10 points 1y ago
It's trolling, yes. On one hand it's very kind of you to transcribe it for us, on the other, this person knew what theywere doing, and attention is exactly what they wanted. The best reaction is a downvote and a report, which is what they've gotten.
Use-username [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yes I think they were being sarcastic and it wasn't very nice of them.

I chose the post flair "discussion" but the post flair has been changed to "Inaccessible". I assume that is because a moderator noticed that there was initially no transcription provided. I did copy paste my transcription comment as quickly as I could. This post is now accessible because of my transcription in the comments, so I've changed the post flair back to "discussion". I hope this doesn't break any rules.

Here is my original comment, copy pasted from the original post:

I'm aware this post was probably sarcasm (the post title says "the blind people will be so happy when they see this") but blind Redditors may be curious to know what it says.

For any blind Redditors whose text to voice can read them the post title but can't read them the photo, here is what it's about:

I saw this post on r/wholesome. It appears to be a screengrab of a Reddit post by u/SanDiegoGasElectric posted on the subreddit r/maybemaybemaybe. The post title is "SDG&E & 211. Partnering for your safety."

Edit: actually, maybe it was posted by u/graysie-redux. I'm confused because both the usernames u/graysie-redux and u/SanDiegoGasElectric feature in the screengrab. Underneath u/SanDiegoGasElectric it says "Promoted" so maybe the image is an ad.

There is a picture of a blind man with a cane. A guide dog is sitting next to him. The man is standing outdoors in front of a house that has two trees next to it. His hand rests on his guide dog's head like he is petting the dog and saying "good boy".

The main text on the picture says: "San Diego Gas and Electric and 211 partnering for your safety"

The small text on the bottom left of the picture says "SDGE Wildfire and Safety"

At the bottom it also says "learn more" and there is a link to a website 211sandiego.org

I hope this helps any blind Redditors who may have been wondering about this post.

After looking at the image a bit more, it has occurred to me that so many things about it don't make any sense.

For example, the blind man is holding a cane but he also has a guide dog.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it true that most blind people don't use a cane and a guide dog both at once? I was under the impression that most choose just one or the other (or neither). Please educate me if I'm wrong on this.

My bigger issue would be the use of that picture as a visual. It's rather strange…
Use-username [OP] 3 points 1y ago
It is a bit strange, yes!

You can use both a guide dog and a cane at the same time and it’s encouraged with certain users or situations such as needing to identify an object that a dog may struggle with.
Use-username [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Oh, thank you for explaining it to me!
PrincessDie123 4 points 1y ago
You’re welcome, I’m
Sure someone with more experience could explain it in more detail than myself but I’m glad to provide some context.

When one of my friends was going through orientation in Mobility training, we actually took a trip up to Kansas to try and see if he could get on with one of the guide dog programs up there in one of the schools.

The lady we spoke to said that he needed at least the basics of O&M training to be a proper candidate for a guide dog. One of the things that she said that they would do is they would encourage the participant to use their cane along with the actual guide dog while in the learning process, and afterwards to have a better understanding of your surroundings and what you and your companion can do as you navigate the world without sight.

So yes, you are supposed to, at least in the beginning or personal preference, have your cane out while you are with your guide dog learning how to navigate the world. Now this was just with my friend and his experience. Others may actually have different experiences but I'm just basically speaking from a personal viewpoint.

Interesting post. Not sure if I make anything out of it.

I don't understand what the pic is trying to convey... but hey, let's go SDG&E! Woohoo San Diego! Lol.
