Advice on how to label clothes? (self.Blind)
submitted by Kale-Cares
I’m visually impaired and colorblind and sometimes I just want to know what color my shirts are without memorizing all my clothing or having to ask someone every time. I don’t alway care about color coordination, but when I do my own closet isn’t accessible to me

I can not read braille. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to label my clothes?

My friend told me he uses braided numbers for each color. For example 1 was white 2 was black and so on and he would have the same for his pants and socks.

braided as in stitched in? or.

I think he had it stiched in by his family or a local tailor

I did a YouTube video on this for low vision that I will link below. But I know you can also get a label reader it’s an assistive device that will read all labels to you.

Could you get different shaped buttons, round for black, square for white etc or if there is an outfit you have each of the pieces of the outfit have the same button shape

Try color identifiers or a color identifier device. I have one it’s called the colorino and can come in handy. I also own a number of the apps that identify colors too.

Just a few thoughts ...

the penfriend audio labeller can be used with washproof labels you sow into your garments for repeated use.
Personally, I just cut labels, I know the bottom right corner slit off items all go together that way, for example.
But outside of work I rock a pretty bland wardrobe.
I suppose you could also label the hangers somehow, and then careful coordination while you wash would mean you could keep items on their appropriate hanger.
A colour detection app might be useful for things with very obvious colours, but will fall down with patterned fabric and such.

The idea of labelling the hangers is awesome and i never though of it. You’d need help only after washing stuff.

Labeling hangers (or even getting different types of hangers) is actually a really good idea. As crazy as it sounds, most of my clothes go back on the same hanger anyway. When I do laundry I know which ones were used compared to which are just empty.

I think I might look into if this is doable for me

You have color detection apps for phones like Swatches that you could try out.
