White cane training: It was so wise of me. (self.Blind)
submitted by NotGoing2Say
Ok, so a brief post is a good post. Right ?

About 3 years ago (when I had a lot of useable vision) I decided to undertake white cane training, since I knew my vision will eventually rapidly decline. I figured 'buy an umbrella *before* it rains.

Fast forward to now'ish and my level of vision is significantly worse, I'm living by myself (unlike before) and I am full of confidence when it comes to using aids like my white cane, magnifier and forms of talking tech.

Snaps for me.

Glad you got the training early! It's better to learn a skill and not need it, than need a skill and not have it.

yeah.
I forgot to say that I also learned Braille quite early on. Once again, thinking forward. Sure it doesn't help me apply makeup in the morning but..........

I used to enjoy reading my scrapes and cuts as a child. I had loads - I used to scateboard and rolerblade ... rather silly of me having know vision at all. But heck it was fum.

Cane training is useful. I'd also recommend a good GPS tool: both Loadstone and Soundscape for the iPhone let you add your own exact positions. it's not quite a guide dog, but it can be a help.

I used to rollerblade. Made a cane out of pvc pipes that rolled in front of me.

Good on you! I am still in the process of getting my white cane training, though I went blind in both eyes before I knew who to reach out to. I can't wait to be able to leave the house when I want to again and be able to take a walk. I used to walk several miles a day and now I get so cramped up and no one will take me on walks. I've been forbidden from doing so alone by my family and fiancee, I've gotten lost before.

I understand.
I'm an outdoors'y kinda person. Most days I'm getting in between 9000 and 12,000 steps a day.
White cane training has allowed me to be pretty 'normal'.
Withinout my cane, like you - I'm pretty unlikely to leave my apparetment alone.

Happy to hear you’ve tackled the white cane! I’m still having trouble accepting mine and I only take it out if I absolutely have to. I need to embrace my visual aids like you have.

White cane training is so important. Unfortunately, the quality of that training depends a lot on where you live. Where I am, I've been blind since birth and I had absolutely abominable white cane training throughout school. There's a place in the States that apparently offers a week long mobility course. I've been meaning to do it to get more of the nuts and bolts.

That’s a very good thing you’ve done and definitely more people need to do it.

I have been also giving thought to the training but the nearest place to me is 2 and a half hours. I asked my doctor to set it up when I last saw him but I think he forgot. I do think I need to break down and get at it though.
