Can a visually impaired person become a psychiatrist?(self.Blind)
submitted by Saraphim12
im visually impaired( legally blind with no vision in my right eye and limited vision in my left) My visual issues have caused me no trouble in school. ( I have some accommodations) I don’t drive though

Ive studied philosophy over the past few years, but I’m thinking of doing a biology major. I’m particularly interested in psychiatry.
Do you guys think a visually impaired person can become a psychiatrist?

I don't know which country you live in.
Here in Brazil, there are blind psychiatrists. There are also blind people who are clinical doctors, and there are also blind people who are psychologists.
There are blind people who are public servants and others who work in the private sector.
You will need to work harder than a person with normal vision. But I don't find any obstacles to studying, graduating and working.

Psiquiatra precisa fazer alguma coisa que necessite estritamente da visão? porque junto com psicologia e, num grau variável, fisioterapia, parece uma área mó de boa pra cegos da medicina / cuidado.

I'm blind in my right and low vision in my left. I went to school to be a psychologist. I think the toughest part about going for psychiatry instead is that you would go through med school for an MD and that will require labs and residency. Depending on what accommodations are available, that could be really tough. I would recommend asking an MD sub for their thoughts or experiences on getting through med school while low vision. They could give you a better idea of how to make it happen!

perfectly doable with zero eyesight.

I mean I’d definitely prefer one as a LV person because abled therapists tend to get….weird when you insist that you aren’t traumatized by being blind. And it’s definitely allowed in the US!! Now getting accommodations throughout your whole masters is another issue….

I don't see why not.

Google Tim Cordes. He went through medical school and is a blind psychiatrist.

There's no reason why you couldn't be a psychiatrist. I think, so long as you have the accommodations to be successful, you'll be fine. Of course, advocating for your accommodations in the workplace is essential, as well as in school.

I think you could. If anything, it might be helpful for other blind or low vision individuals seeking support. Sometimes seeing someone who has first hand experience with struggles similar to their own may help a person feel heard and could result in them being more willing to open up to you. :)
