Need help finding new hobbies for my visually impaired mom!! (self.Blind)
submitted by SaltyBeautiful2512
My mom is 70 years old and half blind. Her “good eye” is okay-ish, but she’s completely blind in her left, so her eyesight is very limited. She’s got depression due to not being able to drive and go out and do things she used to be able to do. If anyone has ideas, please let me know! Thanks ❤️

Here’s my ideas for her (and I’ll be trying them out with her to assist and find some new hobbies for myself too):

Training our dog for new tricks, ceramics, cooking & baking, water aerobics

Definitely seconding getting her signed up with the National Talking Book Library in your state! you can get her signed up at any library and the librarians will help her get set up.

If she likes movies, most movie theaters have audio description for films, just ask when you buy your ticket for the audio description headset and if it's not working you can usually get a refund on your ticket after the show. There's also lots of described shows and movies on tv services like Netflix or you can get just the audio of tons of shows off Audiovault.

If she's up for learning how to use a white cane she can still go for walks and socialize by herself.

There's tons of accessible crafts out there too like crochet and knitting and tactile drawing or beadwork. She can garden too if she likes being more outdoors. Really it just depends on what kind of stuff she's into.

These are great, thank you! ❤️

Has she ever done any knitting or crochet?

If so it is easy to transition to doing so without seeing. If not then learning is interesting

What did she enjoy doing before? I do like the fact you're trying new things with her - water aerobics sounds like it would be good for her.

Hi there, I'm looking at becoming better at knitting, and I would love to learn how to crochet! It would be great if we could connect, I know it's a bit off-topic for this post, so maybe we can discuss this privately.

Yeah, she’s done crochet before! She’s made a lot of afghan blankets so I think she’s kinda over that hobby for awhile haha. Thanks for the suggestion ❤️

I like origami, very easy to get into and I use a combo of my vision and feel...I also remember learning how to make baskets from an older blind woman :-)

You can drive in the USA with one eye. There’s a Facebook page called Lost Eye. Those people all have one eye and drive. My cousin’s husband drives with one eye.

She can do anything (except car driving if you are in usa). My older brother is completely blind in his left eye too and is perfectly capable to do all he wants. Here in Mexico he can drive too. About your mother, the only thing she should take care of is not to do activities that put her remaining healthy eye at risk. Things like knitting, reading, watching a lot of TV or excessive cell phone use are not recommended.

Does she like to read? I do a lot of reading and listerning to music.

She says she doesn’t like to read anymore because of her eyesight. But she does like listening to music and audiobooks! I’ll definitely get her more CD’s and records.

It takes some practice, but she could learn to read by listening to books. Lots of talking books available from nls. Some jpeople have trouble adjusting to listening to a book. I had an aunt who couldn't see enough to read, and I could never convince her to try listening to books. Good luck.

NLS BARD has free access to audio books from Library of Congress. Millions of bestsellers, history, science, you name it. Magazines too. Free for the Blind, my wife loves it. There is an app too

That’s very helpful, thank you so much ☺️

She’s got it down pretty good, she’s been blind for around 30 years already. I think she’s just been bored for awhile and needs to become engaged in activities to keep her happy and moving. Thanks!

Why can’t She do hobbies she use to like? If she gets rides to places why can’t she do what she did. A lot of it is just adjusting and adapting.

A lot of stuff I do I get rides. I like volunteering and advocating. I just got someone to drive me to be on someone’s podcast last week.

I do a lot at church or go to the pier and go for a walk at the beach and bring my speakers and do some evangelism by playing music. Give back a little to God.

Does she like baking and cooking?

A hobby I use to do and it got expensive was go out to eat food. Was a foody for a while and trying new things going to a lot of places and coffee shops.

I love to learn and research and read a lot of nonfiction. Can she learn the computer and look stuff up on the internet or somehow read technical websites or otherwise.

I go on social media and I find political buddies and people who like to talk about faith and such. But social media is also fun.

What about technical stuff like audio editing and such?

What about walking around the city and exploring it?
