My mom 72 is going blind. How can I help her? (self.Blind)
submitted by My_fair_ladies1872
She has macular degeneration and is now at the stage where her vision is getting a bit wonky. We know it will progress from here and will look into resources for her to learn how to cope. What else can I do to help her as she goes through this change in her life?

If she's willing, and you're in the states, I know all states have a disabilities department that provide training and resources. I know in Ohio there's opportunities for Ohioans with disabilities and The Sight Center. Both provided great resources.
Additionally introducing alternatives to things she used to do but may not be able to is amazing (i.e. audio books, audio description on TV, adaptive tools for cookie, large print playing cards, etc)

Check out this link. It's an online shop of tools. https://www.shopattheshop.org/

A good attitude, assistive technology training, braille training, independent living skills training, and mobility and orientation skills training is about what is needed.

I see you’re in Ontario (like me). Get in contact with Vision Loss Rehabilitation Ontario. They provide training in what I’d call essential blindness skills, getting around independently, adapting chores and hobbies to do with less vision. Some of these things, you could figure out on your own, I’m sure, but a rehab specialist is a short cut to get you (or your mum, in this case) back to living an independent and fulfilling life more quickly. VLR will also be able to refer your mum to CNIB programs, such as peer support programs so she can meet other people with sight loss like herself.
