Can anyone help me figure out a few things with the Screenreader app JAWS (self.Blind)
submitted by ParakeetYeeet
Hi everyone, newly blind guy here who just got JAWS from my states commission for the blind. I am having a few issues I could very much use help with. Thank you in advance.

First. Is there any way to bring the focus to the mouse when using microsoft edge or chrome? For example, I use the down arrows to navigate through the webpage until I get where I need the screen reader. I would much rather just click the paragraph I need read and have that red square move to it.

Second. Sometimes when I am trying to use google docs I think I accidentally hit a keybinding or something and suddenly I can't type anything at all or use my arrow keys to navigate the text. Any ideas?

Thanks again!

Assuming the web page is coded nicely, simply pressing "p" will navigate you from one paragraph to the next.

Do you hear JAWS say anything when you stop being able to navigate? Insert + z will toggle your virtual PC cursor off, which stops you from navigating. Pressing Insert + z again should turn it back on. However, you should have heard JAWS speak something like "Use Virtual PC Cursor On" / "Use Virtual PC Cursor Off".

In settings, you can set Mouse Echo to read whatever it thinks is a paragraph when you place the cursor over it, but the highlight box will not follow the mouse.

Oh man the mouse echo is so helpful! Thank you so much for that. Also using "p" is great too. Thank you! I'm not sure what the issue is with docs. I have the "accessible" setting on and I simply cannot use any of the standard keybindings within it

Try NVDA. It can be better than JAWS for some stuff. It's free and has built in mouse/pointer support.

Interesting! I have jaws but honestly it's so clunky, I think I may take your advice and go back to NVDA

Learn to use the keyboard or the assistive tech way and not the mouse it will help you greatly if you lose more vision and need to depend on it vs still using the mouse.

Oh really? That's very true. I'll get going on that!

Yes blind people don’t use the mouse. Just the keyboards and shortcuts.

Not true. Low vision users, OP is in this group, often use pointers and keyboard.
