Ambutech folding slimline vs. NFB folding fiberglass canes (self.Blind)
submitted by yoyo2718
Has anyone used both? Can someone comment on what the difference in in feel?

NFB straight cane is my favorite, but as a part time user, it isn’t really practical for me, just curious how these other 2 compare.

Edit: as a followup, is there a recommended number of sections on the slimline for various lengths? I’m looking at a 54 inch, not sure how many sections would be best.

I can't remember if my NFB folding cane is fiberglass or not but I do have one as well as two slimlines. I really like the slimline for how light it is and easy to move. I haven't had any trouble with it out in public so far but I should note that I use a dog so my folding canes are for when she's not able to be with me. My fave is still my NFB rigid cane but the slimline is really nice if you have to go for a long walk and have wrist trouble. I do like how it feels and handles over the NFB folding cane. It's kind of springy but not in a distracting way. I have the same kind of metal coated rubber tips on all my canes too so the sound is still what I want and those are the lightest tips.

Thank you! What is it about the nfb folding that you don’t like?

Mostly it’s just the weight of the NFB folding I struggle with and the thicker handle. Most people won’t be bothered by this I think, I just have really messed up wrists

Oh interesting, I didn’t realize the slimline handle was smaller than the nfb handle. Thanks for the heads up.

I have a graphite Ambutech slimline folding cane with a marshmallow tip and a fiberglass NFB folding cane with a large ball tip.

The slimline cane has a tendency to get caught in cracks in the sidewalk. The larger ball on the NFB cane just bounces right over them. The slimline cane feels more flimsy so when I get the tip wedged somewhere I feel the cane is about to snap in half.

I use the NFB cane about 95% of the time. Anytime I need to go outdoors I use it. Even if I'm just going grocery shopping I take the NFB because I have to walk from the parking lot into the store. The only time I use the slimline is in airports, where everything is indoors.

My canes have 5 and 7 folds but when I buy another one it will have the minimum number of folds I can get. I keep my canes fully extended all the time because I'm afraid the sharp edges on the cylinder sections wears the elastic band. When I'm in the car I only fold it once. A three section cane will fold small enough to fit in an airplane's overhead storage.

I always get an odd number of folds. I don't want the handle rubbing up against the tip when it's folded - there's no telling what kind of germs are on the tip of a cane.

Thanks! I hadn’t thought of the the tip touching the handle, that’s a good point. I use a metal glide tip and have to tap in my area no matter what…too many crazy sidewalks and brick for constant contact here.

They’re both pretty comparable and similar I would say the slim line grafite may be stronger.

For straight canes have you tried out dcanes?

I use a streight 63 inch cane. I tried the NFB’S collapsable cane in the same lenghth and the bottom seemed quite heavy.
