I wrote and voiced audio description for Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood, AMA (self.Blind)
submitted by WadjetAD
Working with Post Haste Digital, I created the audio description script and narration for Richard Linklater's latest film on Netflix: 'Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood'. I'd love to answer any questions and feedback about this film or audio description in general!

What were your biggest challenges? What aspect did you enjoy the most?
WadjetAD [OP] 6 points 1y ago
One of the biggest challenges during this project was the amount of vintage specialized equipment shown. A large part of the movie depicts the machines and devices used by the Apollo astronauts in the 1960s to train for the moon landing. I did a lot of research to make sure I identified each piece of equipment correctly. The other side of that was balancing technical accuracy with descriptions of the devices in layman's terms, so a non-sighted person would come away with not only the names of the machines but also a sense of how they look and operate.

I most enjoyed describing all of the pop culture that was inspired by the air of excitement surrounding the moon landing. My father was a kid in the 60s and has a lot of nostalgia for the Space Race, so it was special for me to be able to view the time in history from the personal perspective of the main character, a child.

I don’t have any questions but I just wanted to say thank you
WadjetAD [OP] 5 points 1y ago
You're welcome. You deserve it and it's my pleasure to create it.
ukifrit 5 points 1y ago
didn't you have any assistance from a blind Person?
WadjetAD [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Not on this project. It is my practice to employ blind quality control people and narrators whenever possible. However, I did not control those aspects of production on this film.
ukifrit 6 points 1y ago
It's usually noticiable when they don't let it happen. Like, as a blind audiodescription consultant myself, it always feels like the product isn't as polished as it should.
WadjetAD [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Have you seen this film? I'd love your experienced perspective regarding what could have been executed better!
ukifrit 4 points 1y ago
Not yet. I'll have some free time next week, I'll watch it and share some thoughts.

Is it? can you give me an example, either through video or text between a blind person describing something in a movie/show and a sighted person describing either the same scenee or something to show me the diffirents?
ukifrit 2 points 1y ago
It doesn't work like this. The blind person never describes anything, that's the job of the sighted part. The blind person does a specialized type of revision. Like, you need to have to be taught to have that audiodescription perspective.
I don't have much English examples, but I can try searching for some stuff later today.

How did you get in to this industry and what was your first one? What is your favorite part of doing this?
WadjetAD [OP] 1 points 11m ago
I'm a writer and I used to do a lot of odd jobs to support myself before I got into audio description. One of those jobs was creating captions. The company I worked with added audio description to their business and I thought it sounded interesting, so I watched some AD and created a demo for them. The first project they had me work on was 'The Handmaid's Tale.'

My favorite part of the actual work is the variety of challenges it affords. Every program offers its own unique problems that require creative solutions. Beyond the nitty gritty, I love doing a job that lets people experience the movies. Some of the feedback I receive makes me very emotional. I feel extremely lucky to do a job that changes people's lives for the better.

Ah, that’s interesting to hear.
Ok_Scar9881 2 points 1y ago
How long did it take to write the descriptions as well as do the recording for the AD? Was a 1 take sort of thing, or did it take a lot of revision? I commend you for your efforts! Have you done audio description for other projects besides this one?
WadjetAD [OP] 1 points 1y ago
It took around six hours to write the script and four hours to record. I typically make notes during the writing process of issues I foresee needing revision. When I complete the first draft I read that list and then do a second polish pass with that list of revisions in mind as my main concerns. I've done description for hundreds of movies and tv shows. I've also worked on product information and government videos, but entertainment is my focus.

Wow, that's fascinating! What does it take to do audio description? Are ou someone who works for a company, or do you do this on your own?
WadjetAD [OP] 1 points 1y ago
It requires a lot of specialized knowledge and an imagination. I used to write AD freelance. Now I run a small business that handles scripting, narration and mixing/production as well.

Nice, they’ve definitely gotten better over the years I remember I used to not like the audio descriptions because they would interrupt things or maybe I was just younger and fussier then
King_of_the_Dot 2 points 1y ago
What was the film about? Is this your first time working with film in this way? What do you try to convey in your descriptions that you think other descriptions lack?
WadjetAD [OP] 2 points 1y ago
The film was a retrospective about boyhood in Houston in 1969 as NASA prepared to attempt the moon landing. There is a fantasy element in which NASA trains the 10-year-old protagonist to land on the moon. It was whimsical, comedic and historical. I'd recommend checking it out on Netflix!

This wasn't my first rodeo. I've written description for hundreds of films and television series. Pushing audio description to new heights of quality is my passion.

I try to convey a sense of a film's character and style. From my point of view, accuracy and entertainment are the two basic pillars of good audio description when it comes to film. The audience must understand the exact details of what happened on screen, to a standard where they could lead a discussion of the film among sighted audience members. But these details must be conveyed elegantly so that the listener becomes immersed in the story and experience. Beyond these basic requirements, I strive to use language and details that inform characters' personalities and convey a film's atmosphere and tone, without dictating something of my own invention to the audience.

The subject matter definitely intrigues me, so ill definitely have a look. Thanks for the work you do! I dont require your services, but I am most definitely grateful that youre able to provide it to others.
Do you have a particular film and its audio description that you really enjoy, that you could recommend? Id love to get a better idea of how audio descriptions come across to non-sighted *viewers*.
WadjetAD [OP] 2 points 1y ago
'Alien Worlds', 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things' and 'The Queen's Gambit' - all on Netflix - have excellent description.

A good exercise is listening to a described program without watching, then going back and watching it with the description still on. I'd also recommend turning AD on and leaving it on. I rarely watch anything without it so I can learn and get a small sense of what it's like to only experience visual media with audio description playing.
