Hello! I've posted here several times before! This time I am here to ask a question to some of my fellow visually impaired cane users out there that can get around on their own without it but still use it on occasion.
This post is after an encounter I had with someone a few weeks back while using my cane. I was walking around in the heavily tourist-populated area of my city with a friend. We were walking one way while a couple and their dog were walking towards me. They slightly move to the side and my friend brings up how cute their dog is. They say thank you and then start describing their dog to me! It then became kind of awkward as I proceeded to tell them that I could see.
How do yall bring up that you can see even though you are a cane user? Also, what stories do you guys have of people reacting to you using a cane? I'm just curious!

I have RP and have needed a cane for a while. I have significant blind spots and walking can be a hazard. I just ordered my first cane but am nervous. I know I need it but there are very few blind people in my area. It took me months just to get to a point where I felt comfortable enough to buy it. I can still see enough to stay out of the street. I just occasionally miss things. I have to be looking directly at my path but even then I don't always see obstacles. I'm tired of running into stuff you know. It hurts and is embarrassing. I have wondered about this as well. Will the cane cause people to believe I can see nothing at all?

You will get it every once in awhile but I just explain I have blind spots low.
I sometimes tell people I can see where I'm going but I can't see down by my feet. This is my anti puppy and child punting tool. I feel bad when I accidentally kick puppies.

I've mostly been kicking cats and stepping on dogs and people. None of them are happy with me right now.

Depending on the situation I just say "oh thank you but I can see that", though this doesn't happen very often to me and I find myself having to ask for descriptions more often than not.

Well, you could explain that, while some of us can still see shapes, colors, and light/dark, that there will always be some objects that we just don't see, they either blend into to the background or fall out of our field of vision, and using a cane can help avoid collisions and falls.

There are visually impaired all over, you just don't know who they are because it's not that apparent. If not at home or work I almost always use a cane because if I get hurt it's on me. I tell people, depending on the light I can see a little. At work they say they can't tell I am visually impaired.

If it comes up, I just say that I don't have any peripheral vision or depth perception.

I just casually say "oh, I just have low vision." If I don't make a big deal out of it, other people wont.
