seeking braille fulltime. (self.Blind)
submitted by LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce
Hi,
I have been blind since pretty much birth thanks to LCA. As a result of this I was basically raised on Braille since first grade although I do know what most of the print letters look like because my kindergarten teacher had them in sandpaper on her wall which was honestly kind of awesome but anyways...
I started on a Perkins in first grade to maybe second or third where I alternated between a Perkins and a mountbatten and then started using an apex in fourth grade till Middle School where I started using a braille Note touch.
And yeah when the Plus update came out I switched to that.
No I did some Jaws training in about first grade then my brailless and everyone told me I didn't actually need to learn Jaws so I took it off of my IEP because I wasn't really getting the hang of the computer and I prefer to Braille anyway.
A couple years ago they decided I did need to learn jobs and I need to learn it immediately so they altered my IEP to take Braille away from me and stick me on the Jaws computer during school rather than trying to ease me into it or learn it because I said I wasn't learning so I might as well go at full time because that would apparently make me learn faster or something
Yeah that didn't work but most of the problems happened right before and then during the pandemic shutdown.
Anyways I got my Braille note touch plus back for the rest of high school, thank the gods.
But the problem is what I'm going to do after high school because I've been told multiple times that voc rehab will not provide me with any sort of Braille note after I leave school and it will only be a job computer, whichever established I'm not great at working on and frankly I don't feel comfortable with the computer not being able to have any contact with what I'm doing I can't read what I'm typing and I've been raised on Braille my entire life, not to mention an incident in 9th grade where they decided I was doing too much personal stuff on school devices and had me hooked up to monitors in every class which made me kind of anxious around computer screens that can watch me or that people can watch what I'm doing on. So all in all I will not be getting a job computer one thing leave school for my own mental health.
Something no one else seems to understand my mom in particular says I'm just refusing to learn how to adapt to changes and that I'm stuck in the past, ironic coming from a person who thinks that phones are still only used sparingly and you can live in the world without one these days when everything's all technology technology hooked in to every little thing, but once again that is irrelevant.
I'm not financially stable yet and I'm in my last semester of high school actually I should have graduated but I took an extra semester so I could work on life skills and other such things that I haven't really gotten around to yet due to personal things happening in my life and other reasons. So I'm wondering how I can get a hold of a good Braille Note touch Plus since voc rehab won't give me one and I'm not financially stable enough to buy one straight from humanware yet.
And someone sent me an ad for a free one but it turned out not to be a plus and also turned out to be like 2 years old and crashed pretty much the day after I bought it which was about $1,800 down the drain from pretty much everyone in my family who pitched in to get it for me. So I'm not going to be asking anyone to fund buying another device for me after that disaster not to mention the price humanware gave me when I called to ask about buying one or upgrading one since I figured I could upgrade the broken touch I got to a touch plus that would work it's still around $5,000 or something, and that was a a couple years ago I don't even want to know what it looks like with the inflation rates happening.
I don't know where to turn to since everybody in my school and co-op just direct me to voc rehab and voc rehab has made it clear they won't give me one and as far as I'm concerned it's the only device I'll be able to use to be able to live a normal life.
Even technology training at the camps I went to and everything refused to feel much of teach us how to use them it all focused on using Jaws
The only other device I'm somewhat decent at using is a mantis hooked up to something like an iPad it's clunky and kind of uncomfortable but it doesn't give me the same anxiety the Jaws computer does and at least there's some Braille I can touch if nothing else I'll settle for that if I have to.
But I just don't know what I'll do if I'm denied Braille for the rest of my life, even by the people who are supposed to provide us the resources we need in order to live happy productive lives.
And no I don't want to use a braille display with a Jaws computer because most of the Braille displays I've looked at don't use the humanware system that I've been raised on.
I offer you an Android phone and sadly most devices only connect to an apple so I can't even use a braille display with my phone.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions that can help?
I'm low-key desperate.
retrolental_morose 3 points 1y ago
You can modify all screen readers to do things similarly to the Braillenote. For example the students I teach who come from the Touch like to check their power with enter&p, their time with enter&t and so on. They're familiar commands that let them move to Windows or whatever with less of a jarring change.

Unfortunately a Braillenote won't get you terribly far in many workplaces. I'm afraid you do need to consider moving to some more mainstream tech. For all the Braillenote is a neat idea, they are not a one-stop solution for life. Every app in KeySoft is so cut down as to make it useless for adults who need to lead fulfilling, productive, employed lives. The evidence for this is simple; they had to move from KeyWeb, a cut-down web browser, to something more mainstream to keep up.
you can probably bury your head in the sand and pass at college or whatever because 1, people may feel you can't move to something new and, 2, they'll believe Humanware's marketing that the BrailleNote is a modern, powerful and all-in-one solution for productivity. But I've never seen a respected colleague using one exclusively. Sure, some people use them for noettaking, some even check their emails now and then, and a very few people browse the web with them. But everyone with whom I work as an adult who is blind can also use an iPad, or a phone, or a computer of some sort to do the things where the Braillenote falls down.
With a Braillenote, you won't be able to collaborate with sighted colleagues on a presentation or a document in real time. You won't be able to access the vast majority of online training materials an employer might require you to undertake. You'll struggle to react to suggestions from colleagues on your own documents or to track changes and make comments or suggestions in theirs. You'll find almost any online platform - for timesheets, tech support tickets, live chat, knowledge-base work or any number of other things difficult and, unless you're going to lug around a computer monitor, nobody's going to see what you're doing as you do it or work side-by-side with you on something.

I'm not saying give up Braille by any means, but learn to use it with hardware that the rest of the world uses too. That way, if your phone or computer dies, you can connect your Braille to another one. If there's a necessary upgrade or change, everyone else will be going through it too. And if the Braille device itself dies, you can rely temporarily on using Braille Screen input, or 6key entry on a qwerty keyboard. So many more options if you untie yourself from Humanwares handholding, expensive, underpowered, inefficient and dumbed-down system.
Perhaps we just see things. Differently.

Can you all stop assuming I don't know how to use the computer

Jesus Christ this response is getting annoying

You know even with the pandemic and being forced to use the my computer for the school work I still graduated that year

I can use it when I have to okay I do know how to use some of it I did take job classes

That's why I know for certain it doesn't work for me because I've actually used it

And if a job won't hire me great I won't take that job
Duh

I'm not so desperate that I need the first job I interviewed for yet

There are some jobs that will work after all I can wait until I find one

And if I can't I'm still be happier with the one device rather than the other one okay no matter what it does to my life well it's pretty much already a mess anyway

And if I can use both devices and better yet connect them to each other so I have all that even access of one and have all the perks of the other one that's the best possible scenario and I don't see a problem with it

I do know how to use the computer okay so if you want can stop assuming I've never touched it in my lifetime that would be greatly appreciated
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I have my monthly checks for one thing

I'm a good writer or so people tell me I can write poetry and stories and who knows what else song sometimes

I'm also interested in the arts like singing and acting and I'm kind of decent at those more than that actually I was in the lead in my school play this year one of the leads anyway and I got all Athen drama and choir

I can mental math more than some others even up to some algebraic equations while others I could use an abacus for or the calculator

And for documents looking nice the browns do have some layout and formatting options

I have a good memory and can organize which some people say count of skills so I'm not really sure why

And like I said I'm willing to use other devices and not 'just' the one thing

As I mentioned I'd be willing to use a mantis hooked up to something for work if I needed to

I also have my phone which I really wish to connect to Braille displays cuz that would make everything so much easier I'd love to get a chameleon and hook it up to my phone they need to work on making Braille to flave connect to Android devices

I could bait a test and I'm good with reviews since I'd like to go into detail about things

I'm somewhat decent if I'm sciences not that that really matters cuz I won't go into a science field due to how much fights required I don't feel comfortable relying on just audio cue for certain things

In fact the whole reason why I'm hooked on a brown note in the first place is because I'm not comfortable with just one thing just one sense I need sound and touch to function properly and I've tried other Braille displays and the only one that worked somewhat decently with the Mantis since the brailliant could never really work correctly and the other ones we tried didn't have the right systems or just didn't connect even though we tried to connect them with tech specialist in the room

Is it true you can connect a braille note to a computer someone said that earlier and nobody's confirmed whether or not that's actually possible if that's possible I'd really be set because I could hook up to the computer when absolutely necessary and still have the device I need for my personal life

I just have the specific preference for a specific system I don't see how my preference for humanware is any different than say a side person debating whether or not they use an apple or an Android phone similar functions different systems different perks

And you can do this in formatting on a brownout you can do tabs and invitations and headings those are all things you can do and there's even more than that you could do alignments aligning all to the left or all to the right or all to the center and you can bolt and I tell if I have an underline

So if those are all the formatting requirements it is actually doable maybe someone who doesn't know the device in and out might not find them but they are there I have found them and I have used them
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
Yes, the BrailleNote can be used as a braille terminal with screen readers, smartphones and tablets. You can even control the device it's connected to from the BrailleNote's keyboard.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I don't see what's wrong with humanware system

Maybe it's because I've been raised on it but I kind of love the way the humanware devices work and none of the other screen readers have the three metal buttons that the brown notes have which are the most convenient things ever when paired with a thumb keys and everything I can navigate it so quickly

You brought up key web and how that's proof that they don't advance but I think it's proof they do advance because they did switch over to Chrome and a whole bunch of other things and it works really good on Chrome I've used it so they can catch up and keep up with other technology

What is it exactly that would leave me out of most workplaces honestly someone mentioned the example of needing to play a disc or something but I don't think most workplace is used those

And I'm not really looking for a job in corporate America anyway as I'd rather do something more creative

Besides there's workplace life and then there's personal life isn't there

I could still use one for my all my personal everything and maybe have a backup that I could use for a workplace job if I really needed one

And I'm sure I could work around jobs that would make it completely non-viable I already will have to ask for accommodations anyway lots of people don't take jobs where they have to do something they aren't comfortable with

There's a whole wide world out there I'm sure I could work with something

There's got to be something out there I can do
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
You might be able to get away with it if you're self-employed, but I—a blind person—would even be reluctant to hire you if you couldn't use a computer. There's too much that you just can't do on a BrailleNote. Sure you can write documents with basic formatting and browse fairly static websites, but that's the limit. You can't create nice-looking documents or effectively browse more dynamic websites. More than 50% of blind Americans do not have full-time employment; many live below the poverty line. Knowing this, why are you making it harder for yourself than it already is? If you can't find a job, how will you continue to afford a BrailleNote? And if the answer is through working for yourself, what skills do you currently have—or will you have by the end of college—to make that possible?

You came into this conversation not wanting to hear that you were wrong, and because of that I think it would be a waste of my time to give you strategies to get back on track. But if you do realize that you're screwed, it's not too late, and I and others here would be happy to help.
SiriuslyGranger 1 points 11m ago
Sure but if you don’t know the computer and refuse to use it for personal life you’re not going to get far. I am going to use this only at work and for work. Isn’t helpful. But if you don’t know how to use the device in the first place how do you do it? Learn on the job? Most companies are not going to wait until you do this if you don’t already know how to use a computer and type fast on a keyboard it’s nope sorry won’t hire you.
razzretina 3 points 1y ago
Dude. Your school was awful to do that and their information is wrong. I got my Braille Sense from Voc Rehab and braille lessons as well as JAWS training. You’re reading and writing, it’s ridiculous that anyone would try to take that away from you just because they can’t read it. You will still have access to braille out of school.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 2 points 1y ago
They said that a braille Note touch couldn't do some things like I guess graphic design PowerPoints or something that a job computer could do and therefore I had to learn job because that's the only thing they'd let me use in college which I wasn't even sure about doing before but that's the argument they gave
And like I said it wasn't just my school thing voc rehab wouldn't do this for me it was also the FBC summer camp I went to so multiple sources
Thank you though I was worried that it was actually normal and I was just overreacting glad to know at least some people think this is weird :)
And the hilarious part is if someone truly did need to read what I was doing the pale notes have a screen on them under the keyboard lol
SiriuslyGranger 1 points 11m ago
16 years ago I would have agreed with you 10006% but now I absolutely can’t agree with you not even 1%.

That was me as well I used a braillenote and my father tried to get me to use a computer and I just wouldn’t touch it. Yep it’s just me and my braillenote. You have a problem with that! Yep I don’t!

When I started to use the computers it unlocked so many doors and tapped in to so many potentials. You can just do so much more. A computer is so much more feature rich and apps and all are more readily available on the computer. There’s so many more functionality there.

Actually I got on because at the time the braillenote couldn’t do it. I wanted to post on a website my fanfictions. But I couldn’t do that! Well, the only way was to beg others to do it for me if I gave them a file or to look for a story for me. I remember I wanted to read a story but couldn’t do that. I had someone else look but they were so incompetent that they couldn’t find it. A few years later I found it and followed it to it’s conclusion actually. The braillenotes are always many steps and versions behind mainstream stuff unfortunately. And can’t do most mainstream apps so if you’re told to go here or do this you can’t discord for instance not even sure if it can do slack. There’s so many other examples.

I heard you want to do tech? I am in the tech industry right now learning to be a dev. You need jaws and a computer for that. Most beta testing occurs on computers and doesn’t occur on the braillenote. Most beta testing things wants you to know how to use the device hopefully. You have to practice using this device not say oh I’ll use it during work. But you didn’t know how to use it in the first place? How can you use something you don’t know how to use for work. It’s too late if that’s the case if you want to learn on the job.

Right now I am really really fortunate to be learning on the job basically getting payed decent money to learn.

Basically everyone else tells me nah that doesn’t really exist unfortunately unless your’e really lucky. Yes it exist for me, and I guess I am really lucky. Even for my job though you need to use the computer and know how. I doubt he would have offered me an internship if I couldn’t use a computer or didn’t do Information technology, testing, teaching, and advocacy and talking to devs before.

I think it will be slim to none for an employer to wait until you can use a computer or even train you.

That’s just the reality of life. Sorry.

I want to or thinking about moving out at one point. Again, yeah, not reality. Life isn’t always fair or just what we want it to be.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 11m ago
They can post can fix now

Quotev is amazing for that

And when I said beta testing I meant mostly on my phone

But just a thought if they want to make sure the apps work shouldn't they make sure they're accessible to most devices not just some of them that would make the world of accessibility a lot better for everyone

As for apps I was told the computer couldn't even get them and that you have to use only the websites and then you'd have to have like 50 tabs open and have to talk between them all the time instead of just having apps on the main screen you could get to with for some reason feels way different even though it's kind of the same thing instead of like trying to edit between five different documents at once and keyword which is impossible

And once again I have to say that I do know how to use the computer for some of the basic functions and probably even more than that if I absorbed any of the job lessons I took for years if I can remember any of them because I tend to forget some of the keys as soon as the lesson is over but I still know how to do several things it's not like I've never touched the computer before

The reason it doesn't work for me isn't because I've never touched it but because I have texted it I've used it and I've experienced it not working for me

But honestly improving accessibility shouldn't in general be that's not accessible change the world so and make them use with it as possible they should try to improve accessibility so everything's accessible to everything else that's like trying to tell a blind person they shouldn't get accessibility at all they should just try to get new eyes

I can't not have this device even if I do use other devices this one's a necessity
Paid-Not-Payed-Bot 1 points 11m ago
> basically getting *paid* decent money

FTFY.

Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*

* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

While I appreciate all the advice I think you guys are misunderstanding the point of this post

I am not actually asking all of you for your judgments on my lifestyle choices

I'm trying to find a resource to get a hold of the one device I want whether or not I take any others isn't the point I may do so

But I'm trying to find a resource

Not living tips though again those are appreciated to an extent

Can anyone actually help me with my goal rather than just telling me how wrong they think I am for wanting to live my life a certain way?

I appreciate all the help you guys are trying to give me but none of you are helping with the actual question I'm asking

I may in fact use multiple resources and different devices that might actually be in my plan but I'm just trying to figure out how to get a hold of one of those

Can anyone help me with that?
Gavin_Runeblade 2 points 11m ago
#1 try to find an Orbit. The APH used to sell them for $500 new, but discontinued them a while back. Their two current products the Mantis Q40 and Chameleon 20 are too expensive.

#2 every state has a SGAT provider, statewide grant for assistive technology. They get federal funds to support tech that is outside the VR realm. Might be an option.

#3 who told you VR wouldn't support it? Go to your local ACB or NFB chapter and get them to advocate for you
Braille is literacy, audio is not. If needed, go to your state CAP.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 11m ago
Oh my moons,

Actual resource advice

Thank you my dude thank you so much

I'll try to keep all of that in mind

So in orbit is the same thing as a mantis but not as expensive

Sounds very tempting but if they don't carry it anymore how will I fix it if it gets damaged

And for the grants that's definitely useful information and I will have to look into that

An answer to the third question my chapter of the nfb actually and the FBC and my personal Braillist all told me
But if there's a chance I can still abdicate it I would love to do so

Since you're absolutely correct audio is not literacy

Imagine trying to pull that as a sighted person

"I'm a fully fledged human being but I can't read so you have to read everything to me"

Lol, no way and able-bodied person would be able to get away with that
CloudyBeep 1 points 1y ago
The only way you'll be getting a BrailleNote any time soon is if you go to college or have a job. You don't seem keen on college, and there are very few jobs that would be doable with just—the key word is just—a BrailleNote.
Ok_Scar9881 1 points 1y ago
As someone who uses a braille display and a computer on a daily basis, I would highly recommend investing time and energy into using a computer. You can very easily use braille with your computer, customize braille commands, etc. But, in addition, get used to a qwerty keyboard if you can. I used to hate it, but as a college student having to do difficult assignments that involve formatting, a computer was the way to go.

I actually use a mantis Q40, which combines a fully functioning standard qwerty keyboard with a 40 cell braille display. I have the comfort of having braille at my fingertips, and the ability to enter commands on my computer without having to memorize too many keystrokes. Plus, it's good for working on spelling, since you don't necessarily have the advantage of typing in contractions in braille like you would using a perkins-style keyboard.

If you really don't want speech, you can turn off the speech in the settings of the screen reader of your choosing, whether that be NVDA, Jaws, etc.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I am familiar with the Mantis as I mentioned it would be my backup option

But why does formatting matter so much

I genuinely don't get why what something looks like should be a necessary necessary judgment for all of life

Anyway I'm sure there's jobs or I can avoid formatting right not everything in the world has to be formatted right please tell me I'm right

Because if the entire world is structured around a visual format I am going to lose it that shouldn't matter

It's little things like this but crushed my desire to learn throughout all of high school whether or not I even end up going to college is still a question I'm debating

And if things are going to be judged by how they look and not by how much effort was put into them or how good the work is I'm going to choose not to do it I've been told college even does necessary as everybody keeps telling me it is and I'm already taking an extra semester of high school
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
Formatting assists with legibility in a similar way to how braille formatting (centered headings, indented list runovers, columnar tables, etc.) assists with the legibility of braille.

I can't think of a single job involving writing that doesn't require at least minimal formatting. This applies to more jobs than you might think because tradespeople have to prepare quotes and things of that nature which are also expected to be formatted in a particular way.
Tasdigo 1 points 1y ago
This is a sighted world. How a document looks makes it easier to read which is very important in the workplace. Actually, it’s very important everywhere. I hear your various arguments but the bottom line is if you’re planning on being a successful adult you are going to have to make some changes. It is not easy learning things that we have no interest in but, if you’re planning on joining the workforce , knowing JAWS is a necessary step to getting a decent job in an office environment for most visually impaired people. You don’t have to do it. But don’t expect the world to adjust to your stubbornness. We all like to use the devices we like to use, but if circumstances call for us to change we have to adapt.
As far as making a living in the Arts, very few people make enough money at it to support themselves without other income.
SiriuslyGranger -1 points 11m ago
This is a childish and naive way to think so I suggest you grow up and quick too especially if you expect a job.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 11m ago
It's not childish

I don't like my mom then anytime you get sick or upset I'm just making it up in my head

Okay I'm not making up the fact that whenever I have to use the computer I start getting nervous and my chest hurts tightening and I breathe faster

Huge screen gives me trust issues before anyone's even near me

I'm not making up the fact that I'm faster trail or feel safer with a braillenote

Just because I know my limits and I've considered them and I'm going to try and work around them like how any disabled person works around any form of their disability doesn't mean I'm being childish

Or is it childish truth refused to get surgery to get their your eyesight back rather than staying blind

Should we all just get cured and change our entire life because I'd be more convenient for everybody else right

Control no one's going to hire a blind truck driver so if you want that job you better go get eyesight back

And if that's not the job you want for your life that doesn't matter you should do it anyway

Do you hear how dumb that sounds

This is the same thing okay

It's not being childish to take the few steps necessary to preserve some of my mental health when I'm definitely not going to be getting therapy because it's too expensive and probably won't do anything anyway

But instead I can work on it myself and try to take the stuff to necessary to make sure I'm actually happy

I can work with or around what I need to I've been doing that my entire life

Why should I stop now

I'm not going to become excited even though my mom wants me to is that also being childish and refusing to change cuz she thinks my life would be better if I could see

Send how many people are upset by the mere concept of forcing someone to have their disabilities erased even in fiction for some reason I doubt that

So how about we stop shoving mental health aside like it doesn't matter and treat it like it's just as valid as the any physical disability

Thanks
CosmicBunny97 1 points 1y ago
I’m no voc rehab teacher or anything, but you’re going to need JAWS to be successful in college and in the workplace. I would recommend having a laptop with JAWS and a Braille display so you still have tactile feedback. You may need further training to use the computer if you’re not used to it. If you can get a Braille display funded, I would go for one that’s a hybrid like the Brailliant, because I assume you’re quicker at typing with a Perkins keyboard rather than a computer keyboard and if that’s the case, that’ll be really beneficial during lectures.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Maybe I'm thinking of a different one then
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I've tried the brailliant

And well I can get the keyboard to work getting the rest of the thing to work and move the way I wanted to it has proven a lot harder every time we tried connecting it it only worked for a little bit and then stopped or disconnected or wouldn't connect at all and it doesn't have any thumb keys so there's that

Someone else in the comments here suggested that you could pair a touch to a job with Bluetooth do you think that option would be viable

That way I would have the computer for when it's necessary but when it's not necessary I wouldn't need to be using it

As a side note though why is John's really necessary for college cuz the answer I was given had to do with font choices on PowerPoint presentations which seems like the weirdest and most arbitrary thing to be super strict about like you don't want blind people working in anything where you need to be using correct fonts anyway would you
retrolental_morose 1 points 1y ago
The brailliant has thumb keys; the front of it is pretty much a Braille Note without the square and triangular buttons.
gunfart 1 points 1y ago
man i'm sorry but just a few things that are really irking me...

first off, punctuation and paragraphs my guy, you gotta break that wall of text up because that was painful to listen to my screen reader power through that.

second, it's not a jaws computer, it's just a windows machine running jaws software. you could also use nvda (another popular screen reader), or even windows narrator and they all work pretty well. you could even pair your braille note to a computer via bluetooth and use strictly braille without audio, but eventually you're going to need to adapt to modern technology if you want to get a decent paying job using any sort of assistive tech.

third, why won't your voc rehab program provide you with the proper tools or are you simply refusing to switch? i understand you may have personal preference to specific hardware brands or whatever, but if if voc rehab is offering something don't pass it up because you don't want it. hell, my voc rehab rep put in for both an 80 cell focus blue and a 40 cell, both of which i will probably never use but i didn't really turn it down because i may want to use them again.

maybe i just misheard the entire wall of text wrong but don't bite the hand that feeds and learn to adapt. you can still have your old traditional ways for things but you gotta remember the rest of the world is going to keep moving forward while you're stuck far behind with a slate and chisel. you don't want to be that guy refusing to learn something new and missing out on future opportunities.

I'm not sure I have no idea what that device is and therefore probably don't know how to use it but assuming the Braille keyboard works the way it does on a Perkins I think that's how they all work right try to find whatever app you can get into where you can write and not have it matter like a note sap or something and then just practice

The sentence I was told to use to practice when I was learning the keyboard is

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

Which will conveniently teach you every single letter of the alphabet which is where you should start and then figuring out contractions from there once you get the alphabet down unless you have the device set to automatically do that for you which a lot of them can do I think but you've got to figure out the alphabet first of course I think you do already know that if you mentioned you know Braille you just not good at it so just practice a small sentences like that where you can make sure you're using every letter and figuring out the difference

After all some letters are very similar and can all be mixed up if you have a voice on whatever device you're using that will tell you what you're typing that'll probably help keep whatever letters you're putting in make sense because those will read off letters that are put in but won't read off the contractions and will only tell you what dots are being pressed so if you manage to type a letter correctly you'll get the letter in audio feedback

Basically like how excited people practice their handwriting write the same sentences over and over again till you get better at it

Also don't some resources actually offer Braille training?
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Ha!

Let's just appreciate how awful touch typing is no matter what format you're we're using xd

And now to give credit I do know something my phone can do that Braille certainly wouldn't be able to not in a readable way anyway 🙈😈🤣
gunfart 2 points 1y ago
i agree with you there, touch typing on a phone nowadays is a little challenging. i'm about a 3rd as fast as i used to be when i was sighted and try to use a full sized keyboard anytime i can. braille input on my phone is close to impossible; i get frustrated after struggling with the second word i'm trying to get out. then again, my braille sucks and i need to practice badly lol

do you happen to have any tips or tricks on practicing braille? i've got a focus 80 blue 5th gen sitting behind me that is just gathering dust and i'd like to put it to good use
SiriuslyGranger 1 points 11m ago
Find a book to read or start typing and practicing. I would start on a perkins actually.
CloudyBeep 1 points 1y ago
Not true at all. You can certainly type those using Braille Screen Input—or from the keyboard of a braille display—if you add a text replacement. (This is an iOS feature; I'm not sure if there's an equivalent one for Android.)
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Trust me my ability to finger type rail without keys is even worse than whatever my microphone is doing to you

If I have to type I tend to use the cordy keyboard on my phone

But that is extremely slow
gunfart 2 points 1y ago
lol alright i'll give you that one 😛
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I used to I stopped when it started putting words and every time I tried

Yeah my dictation sucks

I truly miss Braille
gunfart 1 points 1y ago
if you're using a phone, why not enable braille input and use it?
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I do know what vocational means but I've been also told that their job is to do both prepare you for a job and prepare you for living independently

And for Braille screen input I'm not the best at touch typing and if I can't feel what I'm doing I think it be even worse than just trusting my microphone since I currently don't own a braille display of any kind

Which is why I would like to get one and if it is viable the idea of hooking a brailed note to a computer is definitely the best solution for everybody I would be perfectly fine with that

But braille's not for my phone not unless I can connect it to a braille display trust me as bad as whatever my microphone is doing right now me trying to touch type using both hands on a tiny phone would definitely be much much worse and without the shape of the keys the position of my hands being completely different and no Braille display it wouldn't feel like Braille anyway
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
You replied to the wrong person, but anyway:

Yes, living independently to the extent that you can't come to work wearing dirty clothing and not having eaten breakfast.

Are you saying you don't use Touch Braille? Because it's almost like that, except that you can hold your phone with the screen away from you and your hands holding the shorter sides of the phone with your fingers arranged in a configuration like a braille cell. The screen reader also provides spoken feedback.

I'm honestly quite surprised you've never explored the Terminal application on your BrailleNote. Give it a try with your phone and computer. As has been mentioned, you can adjust the keystrokes so that they're the same as what you're used to.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Oh I have tried touch Braille it's very fun I considered a challenge like when people were in a chat I was in we're trying to see how much they could write without messing up without looking at the screen I decided to do touch broil cuz that's kind of the same thing and it was pretty neat but every single time I did it I had to readjust my fingers because my fingers just keep moving and I have to reset the cell practically every other letter

As for doing it on my phone I don't like landscape mode at all I don't know why but I just prefer to hold it in portrait mode so turning it sideways to right it would kind of throw everything off balance and well that would mimic a braille note better it would also make doing every other thing kind of more complicated and it really if you would have just use my microphone because I've mentioned I don't want to have to adjust my fingers every single time I want to type something
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
OK. I don't find it inconvenient at all, but that's just me. And when doing it this way, you don't need to recalibrate your fingers unless you want to.
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
We all have our preferences

The reason I know things don't work for me is that I have tried them and compared experiences and I understand what works for me and what doesn't I don't just decide I'm not going to try something

Glad you have systems that work for you :)
gunfart 1 points 1y ago
do you not dictate punctuation at all?
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Okay then I would probably be okay with

Like I said I do know how to use Jaws to an extent I just don't want it to be my main device

No one's told me you could think a braille note to a computer they said you had to use different Braille displays like the ... I don't think I can remember now echo maybe that doesn't sound right isn't that the name for the Alexa dot things I don't know but they've never told me I could think a braille Note touch plus to a computer with jaws

I actually wouldn't mind that kind of a setup but they won't give me the Braille device they insist on only a computer or one with a different screen reader rail display that wouldn't work at the device on its own

As for floppy disks I don't even think I know what those are with or without a lol, is it different from a compact disc CD okay I get how that would be necessary for a computer to use

I'm not sure why I would ever be in that situation but I get it

The system you describe seems like the perfect solution to everybody's problems honestly if only my center would give me the one device I want and could accept a pairing with a computer if necessary

also if your screen reader able to read my messages now you didn't say anything so I think it's working I had to triple line each thing in the last message maybe something's wrong with my phone

Thank you for the new information I'll have to recommend that to my VR counselor as soon as I get one I'm currently between counselors at the moment

I am as you said a young person who's all about the technology I just also like being able to read it lol

Looking back at my own comments it's clear my microphone continue to hate me

I'm sort of a messy type are using Braille too I'm just fast but with Braille I can at least edit things before I send them off to the internet

Thank you for answering my question and for the proposed solution that might actually work

I will definitely have to take voc rehab up on that that is a pairing that would work in the US right?
gunfart 3 points 1y ago
overall, all i'm conveying is don't limit yourself to only one tool while shunning the others. being a swiss army knife is far more productive than being just a screwdriver!
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I understand that

The problem is when your Swiss army knife doesn't come with a screwdriver how are you supposed to get screwdriver options then

Thank you for the help
gunfart 2 points 1y ago
knife blade will work in a pinch. gotta learn to be resourceful and adaptive 😉
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
True

But we do like to hope the emergency situations don't become the commonplace ones right well and night blade may do in a pinch you really should get a screwdriver after that happens so that next time you can use a screwdriver it also helps to be prepared

😏
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I did use double lines

And there's plenty they can do

I've been on one for years trust me there's a lot you can do with them if you know how to use them correctly plus they might have changed it a bit since whenever you did did it since they do adapt

And there's a difference between learning to adapt and completely changing your entire system for no real reason

And personal preference and mental health aren't just excuses I mean it's so much more than that

If the position was reversed and they you were told you could only ever use a braille note and couldn't use a computer you wouldn't be thrilled is that just a preference or would you learn to adapt

It's one thing if there's a reason to adapt like I said I've gone through about five different stages of device through my lifetime

But it's another thing to switch all together notice those five different devices I'll use a Perkins keyboard all you similar systems all you similar operating

Lord adapt means to alter something to fit a new environment not to throw away everything for something completely new that has nothing to do with anything else and no connection to the previous anything whatsoever that's more than adapting

Looks like expecting someone to go straight from a landline to a smartphone without something in between or sometime to get the hang of it

What is it exactly that you think this device can't do that's so important that I need to change everything to get it instead

Cuz it can access the internet and work with a good amount of speed it can send emails it can access any app on the Android play store and it has a really good keyword editor that allows me to save and monitor and access all my files that I have on my flash drive
It has Braille and an accessible and easy to learn system with the thumb keys and the cursor routing keys and the e chords and everything else that another device from another system wouldn't know wouldn't have
It's faster and more convenient and doesn't have a slow robot voice
It has a neat screen under the keys that a fighter person could look at or that you could use touch Braille with if you needed to so it wouldn't cut you off from any sighted people
It can connect to a large monitor if absolutely necessary if the screen is too small
you can use apps like Google sheets for when you need to make PowerPoints although I admit it not great with PDF but a PDF is kind of recited people anyway and I can just get it changed to a keyword document if I need the information
It can download attachment from emails easily
It comes with a neat book reader and you can install any others that you want to get a hold of
You can turn speech on and off and still use braille if you don't want there to be any sound so you're not locked to audio only and you can actually multitask and listen to music or something while writing which with any device that wouldn't let you use braille you wouldn't be able to do because you'd have to have the audio
It provides fast neat and convenient editing you can move through lines quickly or jump straight to whatever word you're looking for pop the cursive around wherever you need to and don't have to swipe character by character up and down with a fingernail or by pressing the arrow keys
I could go on but seriously what is it lacking but so important that means it's a device I can never use for the rest of my life?

what is it about the life-eyed lead that would be so impossible that I have to change and get a computer that give me anxiety

Please I'm very curious to know if these people who say I'm living in the past have a legitimate argument or not because so far I haven't heard one that actually made sense

And if you had brio you could probably read at a different pace and not have to deal with your screen reader apparently not being able to read spaced out lines maybe something's wrong with your screen reader because I am using double lines as you requested seems like your screen reader is not great

But go on please tell me why your screen reader is better than being able to read what's on screen so you can tell where the punctuation is and how the words are spelled and which words are being used

I'm very curious and would love to know since I haven't found any major problems in my life that I think I need to fix and so far there's nothing really big missing from it other than the fact that some fighting things I can't do like look at pictures and play video games but I don't think that's something that can be solved by changing devices
gunfart 2 points 1y ago
sorry but my laptop running a standard screen reader can run not just circles but Nürburgring sized laps around what a braille note plus can do. i work in AT/IT for my state's center for the blind so i've got my hands all over all sorts of assistive technologies daily, and believe me when i say you are severely limiting yourself if you refuse to adapt to any other tools. you don't have to drop the braille note completely, as i have said you can sync it via bluetooth to a standard computer and use a screen reader with or without audio or braille and get much more out of what you're trying to do. the advantage there is you're still uysing the note plus, so when/if you're done fudging around with a more complex task the note plus can't perform, you can dump back to the portability of your android tablet with a perkins keyboard

i just don't understand why you would limit yourself, i thought the younger folks were supposed to be all about the future and stuff 🤷‍♂️

*edit*: to answer your question about what you can't do with a braille note... you say you want to go into writing or voice acting or something along those lines. okay, so your future employer gives you a cd-rom or even an ancient floppy disk with valued documents that some whackjob higher up doesn't want floating around in email attachments , and it is imperative that you complete the task as soon as possible. what do you do now?
LAZNS_TheSadBlindAce [OP] 1 points 1y ago
The Braille Note touch plus has full internet connectivity

It can access pretty much any app my phone can

I'm sorry I thought I was facing I guess I forgot to press the line twice every time most Reddit posts seem to have everything they write in spaced out when my reader reads them

As for job it's not about John specifically it's about the idea of a computer without any access to Braille

I can do some basic job enough that I can use the computer and probably an emergency if I need to but I don't want it to be my main device for the rest of my life

Especially not for anything important I might want to do they say I might not be able to use the device I want for every job but ... Well the field I want to go in I I probably be a better writer if I could use braille and not a computer that made me uncomfortable so if I want to be a writer Braille would be more beneficial than a computer
And if I want to be a voice actor which is another career path I've been considering since people have scared me into not wanting to write anymore I don't see how a computer would change me being able to record myself I could do that just if easily on the Braille device

It's hardly a slate and chisel as mentioned it connects to the internet and runs every other app just fine it's not as if I'm deciding I'd rather run on a Perkins or even a mountbatten or even an apex or even a braille Note touch all of which are somewhat outdated

The brown Note touch Plus is a perfectly usable modern device that they don't want to give me because and I swear I'm not making this up

I won't be able to change the font on PowerPoints I'll need to do for college presentations

At least that was the argument the use for switching me to job mid-school year

Just about the only important thing that that device wouldn't be able to do we have to place a phone call and I do have a phone for that

Anything else it wouldn't be able to do probably isn't important to my day-to-day life

And therefore for the personal device I want to live the rest of my life using I don't see why I couldn't use this one other than the fact that the provider won't give me one because they say it won't be useful for as you said every possible job

I guess this resource is very specifically about getting a job but I thought part of it was also about living independently which this would apply to

And I could look for jobs I could do with it

If a blind person I'm already used to be idea that there are certain jobs I won't be able to do because of me being blind and me using advice that couldn't do a certain thing I'll just add to the list of reasons why I couldn't do a certain job

But you'd think if they weren't going to let people use these devices they wouldn't actually provide them and raise kids on them their entire lives

I need to have a physical connection with my words in order to write and feel comfortable with it audio only doesn't really work with me even now I'm using my microphone on my phone to dictate what I'm saying and I'm worried that it's not working because it has a history of sucking but going back to edit it would be a pain I'd have to go line by line word by word character by character with individual little swipes if I was using Braille I probably could have written and posted this comment minutes ago I'm much faster at it it's more convenient it works better and I feel more comfortable with it and safer it

If I was stuck on a computer for the rest of my life it would pretty much destroy my sense of Independence and make every interaction with technology uncomfortable which isn't what I want for the rest of my life

I know it's pathetic but yeah the specific devices actually important to my mental health it always gets worse on summer break when I have to use my phone and don't have access to Braille

Call me a dinosaur if you'd like but I do think that device is relatively modern and in fact I'm pretty sure it's a lot newer than Windows computers or the Jaws program
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
You might be surprised to learn the definition of "vocational".

Also, is there a reason, given your love of braille and writing, that you're not using braille screen input? It's available for both iOS and Android and very similar to Touch Braille. I'm writing this message directly onto my phone screen in braille.

I think I'm like you in that I love the written word under my fingers. To write documents and emails, I type everything from my laptop keyboard and have my braille display connected so that I can review what I've written. It allows me to have the best of both worlds of computer access and braille access. It's what I feel to be the optimal solution for success and what I recommend to everyone in your circumstances.
gunfart 0 points 1y ago
holy shit dude i'm not sitting through another ten minutes of non-stop text. use double lines for paragraphs.

from what i was able to struggle through it sounds like you simply don't want to adapt. i've used a braille note plus and honestly i think it sucked. it was a crappy android tablet with a useless screen and a decent perkins keyboard but it was extremely limited to what it can do. i'd much rather have my full fledged laptop and a regular keyboard (or a braille display if that's your thing) but it really just sounds like you're looking for excuses to not use better suited tools for what you want to do.
