PLEASE READ - POSTING SURVEYS (CORPORATE/SCHOOLS) - QUESTIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY?(self.Blind)
submitted by AutoModerator
**UPDATE: This post will be reposted Monthly - 7-13-22 Next Update**
Many people want to help the blind community by creating new apps or technology. That's awesome! Others are writing stories or making films with blind characters and want to ask a blind person's perspective. That's great, too! This thread is the place where the ones who want to help or learn can connect with the blind and visually impaired people who don't mind answering questions, filling out surveys, or being interviewed. We're putting it in a single, stickied thread for everyone's convenience. Most of the regulars here come for the company. r/Blind is a place where we feel accepted, a place where we fit in with the only other people who understand what life is like for us. It's our place to rant and to celebrate, to vent and to compare notes. It's where we grieve the loss of our eyesight and encourage each other to do our best. We don't come here to answer questions from people who assume we're the blind version of r/AskReddit. Moving all the questions to this thread frees up our sub for the more personal and heartfelt posts.
This is our first week doing this so please be patient if we need to make adjustments.
**How it works:**
If you have a survey for us to fill out or want to set up an interview post the link here. If you're offering compensation for our time please let us know in your post. Some companies (hello, Google) don't allow their employees to post surveys - they require their employees to ask the moderators to post it for them. That's fine, just message the mod team and we'll post your blurb here for you. If you don't have a fancy survey link and just want to ask a question you can post it here.
The beautiful members of r/Blind will DM you and you can discuss your questions with them in private OR they can respond to your message directly in this thread. Any survey request or questions from outsiders posted anywhere except here will be removed so the rest of the sub stays true to its intended purpose.
**Post is now Monthly**
Again, please if you do not receive responses to your survey in 24/48 hours please post to the community and let us know.

Mods let me know if this isn’t right.
I’m a member of this subreddit who’s fine answering more nuanced questions and taking part in research surveys. I have experience as a casual blind participant in app testing and research surveys and have done some sensitivity reading. I’m both a cane and guide dog user. Just please read the faqs and general info on blindness before contacting me, there’s lots of general info there that I don’t like to repeat if I don’t have to heh. I’m also fine with just about any questions since I have been a teacher in the past; there’s nothing I haven’t heard at this point heh.
ColumbiaCEAL1 points11m ago
Hi u/razzretina, Researchers at Columbia University are currently developing a system that makes tennis videos accessible to people with visual impairments. We are looking for blind and low vision people to try out this system and offer feedback. The study will be conducted entirely online via Zoom and we expect it to be no longer than 2 hours. You will be compensated with a $25 gift card for your valuable time. If you are interested, please fill out the following Google Form and we will follow up with you: $1. You should be 18 years or older and preferably speak English to participate in this study. If you have any questions, please feel free to reply on this thread.

I received a notice that the survay is no longer taking in survays. Is there still a chance to sign up?
SLJ73 points11m ago
My issue with monthly / weekly threads is that after the first time they pop up on my front page, I forget to check them, and they won't come back to the top no matter how many people comment. I think this goes for many of us. For the people who like answering questions and interacting with curious redditors, I propose we have something like r/BlindAMA. I'll even make it if people are interested. This way, questions will appear in the front page of people who want to see them.
razzretina2 points11m ago
Honestly seconded. I have ADHD and if it doesn’t show up in my feed or inbox I miss it
rumster1 points11m ago
I msged the owner of that sub awhile back. We as in members of /r/Blind decided on /r/blindsurveys.
SLJ71 points11m ago
Never realized it existed already. That's unfortunate, considering it seems to be rather dead. I think you made the right call.
rumster1 points11m ago
We created /r/blindsurveys/ and will be using this in the near future.
rumster1 points11m ago
We actually have something coming soon -I will follow up this weekend!
Curious_eggwin2 points11m ago
So I am currently working on brainstorming a plot/characters for a play. I want to do a murder mystery sort of story, and I think the antagonist/killer will be blind. However, I do not want to portray this person in a way that vilifies blindness or that is insensitive to challenges that visually impaired people face.
I feel nervous writing about a visually impaired person because I am sighted and I do not know anyone who is visually impaired. I have already done and plan on doing a lot of research into life as a blind person, but I am not sure if that will be enough to help me avoid making a mistake in their characterization. I thought about just not having the antagonist be blind, but I have found that there is not a lot of representation for visually impaired people and I don't want to erase that aspect of my character just because I am nervous about it.
How should I go about making this character realistic and avoiding harmful stereotypes, etc.? Is it a bad idea to have this character be the villain? Should I even include this character since I am sighted and have no experience with people who are visually impaired?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Superfreq21 points11m ago
I've got no experience in this area from an acting or playwriting point of view, but since blind people are a spectrum, I'd be happy to provide some info for you about what I do know and what I know that I don't know. LOL Discord is: Superfreq#2817 But if you wana use another method let me know and we can work something out.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Happy to help and talk. You don’t need to be nervous. A little bit of research and understandinggoes a long long way.
Flashy_Zucchini_8682 points11m ago
Hello! Regardless if you are visually impaired or not, I want you to fill this form.
It is a form that asks you if you heard about various misconceptions about the visually impaired and how often you've heard them, whether it be from the internet or someone in person.
This form is for a school project and it would be really helpful if you could fill this out. Thank you!
Superfreq21 points11m ago
Pretty good survey honestly, much better than most school surveys I've done!
Flashy_Zucchini_8681 points11m ago
Thanks!!
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Well filled it out if you want to talk let me know. There are by the way some of us who are indeed totally blind and we are a sizable bunch too. There should be differences between the two those who do indeed see pitch black/nothing at all, which isn’t black but okay, and those who have some vision. Those of us in the blind community who are totals call them visually impaired or partials.
Flashy_Zucchini_8681 points11m ago
Oh, okay, thanks!
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Yes no problem and that’s right it’s not always a myth we literally see nothing not even color. But I don’t see blackness. What does your elbow see that’s what I see. Not blackness. Most times I don’t think in terms of vision at all.
Feel free to reach out if you want to chat.
HannahRadio2 points11m ago
Hi all,
I'm sure a lot of you know that there used to be a not-for-profit site called Porn For The Blind Dot Org. It started in 2007 and closed down in 2017 - just after PornHub released 50 top clips with professional audio description... coincidence?
I'm looking to get a hold of the people who set it up. I know one of the guys goes by the name 'Elmer', but I can't seem to find anything else. I'm making a podcast series (for a leading podcast company) about audio porn, and the founders of this site played such an important part - I really feel they should tell their own story.
Can anyone help shed any light at all?
Thank you so much, Leeanne
NovemberGoat1 points11m ago
I believe the cofounder was his wife. She was a person of colour, if memory serves.
I know its not much, but I hope it helps. Best of luck to you.
HannahRadio1 points11m ago
Hi there, thank you for this. Do you remember where you read this?
NovemberGoat2 points11m ago
I remember hearing at least one contribution from her on the site. She had a formal, well-spoken tone, like that of a sex therapist. These memories are from twelve years ago so take them with a small handful of salt.
Eviltechnomonkey2 points11m ago
At my workplace, we are looking at different CRM programs and/or support programs to use for tracking user support requests. I want to make sure we get something that will be accessible in the event that we hire in a support person that uses assistive technologies (i.e., screen reader, magnification, etc). I've been reviewing some web sites and running across a lot of things that I worry would put an undue burden on someone using a screen reader.
Has anyone had experience with any programs they would recommend as being accessible?
SiriuslyGranger2 points11m ago
Me and my boss is actually planning on working on such a program! I am still in the process of training though. I know what he has planned for it but I don’t know if I can talk about it publically on a forum. :D hopefully we can come up with something. My boss or employer I am contracting with has thought about marketing it to companys that may be able to use it.
I have nothing right now but it will be in development when I have done training and actually start development if things goes well. Dm if you’re interested to talk more.
Eviltechnomonkey1 points11m ago
In particular, I am curious about Zendesk and if anyone has experiencing navigating that with a screen reader. They have a great $1 page, but I know having that kind of documentation and actually following through with what it lays out can be 2 totally different things.
jage92 points10m ago
This is a late reply, but in case you are still looking, Zendesk is not perfect, but is making strides and improvements. We use it for our business which happens to be run by blind people. Happy to answer further questions via DM.
Eviltechnomonkey1 points10m ago
I appreciate this reply. Zendesk is one of the top ones being considered. I noticed they actually added an Accessibility team and seemed to have some regular communication on their site about Accessibility improvements they were making, which makes me hopeful about them.
maryb332 points11m ago
Hello!
I hope this is the right place to post this.
My name is Maryam Bandukda. I'm a researcher at University College London Computer Science Department. I supervise Masters student projects focusing on assistive technologies for blind and partially sighted people. We have a range of paid participation opportunities for interviews and short online surveys that could really benefit from your participation to help the students' understanding of the needs of blind and partially sighted people with respect to technology design. As all of our research takes the user-centred design approach, community participation is vital to these projects.
Many of our students proceed to accessibility and inclusive design related careers. Therefore, we are keen to help the students understand the needs of and barriers experienced by the blind and partially sighted community.
Here is the link to the projects list with contact details of the students for each project. Alternatively, you can email me on $1 and I can put you in touch with the students. $1
You can also contribute towards improving the design of journey planning technologies by completing this short survey $1.
Yes sure I’ll help but I am in california in the United states, I hope that is okay? If so we can get in touch and you can get me in touch with any and all if you want and I’d be happy to keep participating in the projects.
maryb331 points11m ago
Thank you!
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
No problem dmed you asking another question about the survey. If they want an interview happy to help.

hello. I'm making gadget for blind people . if you press A on key pad it tells them if there is obstacle in front of you ( up to 9m) and how far is it from you . if obstacle is within 1m it will automatically send sound signal . also you can enter distance (up to 9m) and when you walk that distance it sends you sound signal . my teacher asked me to make survey to find out what people thinks about my project. please write in the comments what you think about my project. thank you.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
I think it’s a waste of time. And you’re trying to reinvent the wheel. If this is for that grade and no more sure. Great. Go on. If you want it to be impactful and meaningful, I would suggest you try something else. Virtually bunches of students want to do this and the same projects. We get a lot of these. They kind of already exist but most blind people don’t use nor want them. We have our canes and it does the job better and more marvelous and it’s older. Most mobility type solutions are not really wanted or that good. If you can invent an app that tracs or read bus signs maybe. If you can improve and patent something more accurate then gps you’d be an einstein. There’s other problems out there that are worth investigating. If you can somehow map out all the shops at a plaza and can get people to them, that will be good or a street corner and can get people to them, but again, this will require stuff more precise then gps.
There is Point of sale systems, self check outs and stuff at airports that can be worked on.
student2007751 points10m ago
thanks
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Any more help please message me. This thread and sub does not allow or support these any more technically. Come over to r/blindsurveys if you like but if you want to correspond with me and if you want more help let me know. Perhaps I can give you more help or guidance.
student2007751 points10m ago
thanks for offer but today is presentation so this project is practically finished.
DannyMTZ9561 points10m ago
Could this post be unpinned and replaced with a new post, so that new survays may be found easier.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Most surveys are on r/blindsurveys but I agree all surveys should be directed there. Hard for anyone to mod this thread even and I am mod over there and hard to help out here since this sub isn’t my perview. But yeah. A bit confused why this thread is still up. Maybe just don’t do a post here and just redirect everyone over there?
Bright_Addition86201 points10m ago
Hi everyone!
I'm a student and currently preparing for a Hackathon and was looking for visually impaired users, who'd like to test an existing app?
Details:
\- It's around 20-30 minutes (depends how talkative you are!) \- Will be screen-recorded \- It's a partial guided testing \- I will ask some in-between questions \- ...and test has to be conducted until Wednesday, 14th September
I don't have a big budget, but for those who'd like to participate I could offer a little coffee code of choice! (Sorry student life is equal poor life...)
The testing can be completely anonymous, the goal is to pitch an improvement and make the interface accessible and approachable for visually impaired people. I know it's hard to design universally but I would like to try to better the system and work on the inclusion. If you're interested, please DM me with your email or write down in the comments. Thanks a lot for your help!

Yeah, I am happy to help you may get more responses over at r/blindsurveys
DannyMTZ9561 points10m ago
Hi, has this thread received any new survays recently? I am not noticing any.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Occasionally. There was that post from yesterday below. I contacted the guy. He seems to want to find cane users to talk to and not krane users hahaha! I messaged him asked him if this is indeed what he means. Then he disappeared. I told him I would talk to him but have not heard back.
perororoncino1 points10m ago
Good day everyone. We are currently conducting a design project for our school in the Philippines and is hoping to interview someone who is blind and uses a cane for their daily life. The questions asked will simply be about your daily life and how you use your cane to navigate. Thank you!
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Do you mean Cain? If not that’s OK. But if you do, are use the cane
Few_Screen61661 points10m ago
Hi! We at Monash University, Australia are trying to co-design a technology based accessible solution for education of human movement like Dance for people who are blind or have low vision. We will do some online calls and co-design together. You will be compensated with a $50 gift card for your valuable time. If you are interested, please fill out the following Google Form and we will follow up with you: https://forms.gle/dFYNvdeErekaKG7U7. You should be 18 years or older and preferably speak English to participate in this study. If you have any questions, please feel free to reply on this thread.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Okay I did it.
Altrissa1 points10m ago
Hi you'd be better off posting this to /r/blindsurveys
Superfreq21 points10m ago
Would they though? Blindsurveys doesn't even have guidelines for what they actually want yet, and most people aren't subscribed their still.
Kexin_Z1 points10m ago
Hello everyone,
We are a group of researchers in A11y that aim to make Virtual Realities (VR) be accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities. Our lab (Mad Ability Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) is conducting accessibility research to study how the presentation of disability features on avatars affect the experience of people with disabilities and their interactions with other people in social virtual realities (VR platforms). We are looking for people with disabilities to join our study!
Participants will be asked to complete a three-phases study: 1) an initial 1-hour interview to reflect your social VR avatar experiences; 2) a 2-week diary study, where you will be asked to explore VRChat using avatars with or without disability features (e.g., wheelchair) for 4 hours/week at minimum and complete a short daily survey; 3) a final 1-hour interview to reflect your experiences in VRChat.
To join the study, participants must: 1) be at least 18 years old; 2) have low vision; 3) have regular access to a VR headset OR a computer/laptop with Windows system to be able to use the VRChat.
All studies will be conducted remotely, and we offer a compensation of $125 for completing the entire study. If you are interested in participating in the study, please fill out this survey and we will get in touch shortly: $1. Please feel free to forward this information to anyone who might be interested, thank you!
Superfreq21 points10m ago
You're not going to find more than a small handful of legally blind people who use VR. Not only are the interfaces lacking in accessibility them selves, but their are very few usable programs for the platform and no properly accessible ones. Few of us even own graphics cards powerful enough to make use of these devices, and justifying the money for a VR headset you likely won't get any use out of is difficult.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Okay I replied I have a little bit of experience I once owned a vr headset and did some binaural recordings if that counts. But not that much. I also don’t have a Vr headset myself but have a lot of computers from mac to windows to chromebook. And powerful mac and windows. Or relatively powerful windows. So yeah. I am really a techy not so much of a gamer or vr person more of a dev so yeah. Willing to help if I can.
Jowasvull1 points10m ago
Uhm hi. Man, I really hope this is the right place to post this haha. I'm a writer, I write short love stories and I compile them into a small anthology I've been writing for a year or so. My latest is about Bianca, a young girl that is blind. And I just don't want to fuck it up, man. I really believe that I can make something beautiful here, but I also reaaally think I lack perspective. Long story short, her story happens about a year or so after an accident that blinded her, and the story is mostly about how the way she carries on, after learning not to hold on to the past, and the somewhat optimist aura around her helps others carry on beyond their troubles as well. What I'm here for is basically to ask for some feedback on it. Anything goes, really. I just want to know what could I do to make this... better, I guess. I translated it to English in a Google doc from my mother tongue, so please excuse the sometimes weird phrasing. $1 And yeah, I guess. If you take the time to help me with this, I'll truly appreciate it. Hope you like it!
OldManOnFire2 points10m ago
I can only speak from my own experience here but there's two stages - grieving and after grieving. Either she's still grieving or she's done.
If she's done grieving she's not going to have a problem on the one year anniversary of her blindness. If he's still grieving she's not going to be happy on the other 364 days of the year.
Yes, grieving is a process, not an event. It doesn't suddenly stop. It slowly gets better with time. I acknowledge this. But it still feels like the girl in your story shouldn't be positive and happy all the time except on the anniversary of her accident.
I hope that makes sense.
Other than that minor detail your depiction of her is fine. Good job!

I think most of tech is actually pretty awesome already, but you could work on a probably working point of sale machine, like those units that you can use at the cash registers or self check outs at the stores.
Otherwise I think you are wasting your time, if I may be forthright.
I am a totally blind person here and a techy and a software developer and have worked in tech for a while now.
We do not actually need something like that, because what already does exist is very good already, or at least in progress. They have made existing devices pretty accessible by building it in to current devices. Most of what needs to be worked on is improving accessibility and other apps that can be developed but not duplicate say a screen reader. That’s my professional advice.
Happy to have a conversation with you all too.
GetBrailleCom1 points11m ago
Hi there, I am the cofounder of getbraille.com where we produce braille, large print, and audio materials for all who need them. I have a question for those of you who enjoy eating out. Which restaurants, either local to you or when you travel, would you like to see offer braille and large print menus? We are here to make that a reality. Please feel free to send a private message or reply to this thread. Thank you so much for your insights. We currently cover all of US and Canada. And we offer grade 2 and grade 1 UEB braille. We are visually impaired ourselves and are currently reaching out to our local restaurants we wish provided Menus in hardcopy Braille in the Boston area. Thank you so much for reading! Warmly, Tanja.
OldManOnFire1 points11m ago
The trend seems to be a QR code at the restaurant table. We hold our phone camera over it and the menu appears on our phones. Text to speech software reads the menu aloud to us.
What advantage does a Braille menu have over that? It's an honest question - I'm willing to learn, but the QR code is cheaper, can be updated instantly to reflect new menu items or prices, and doesn't spread germs like a physical menu does. It can also include ingredients, allergy warnings, calorie counts, and more information that simply won't fit on a Braille menu.
What can a Braille menu offer?
GetBrailleCom2 points11m ago
I completely understand your perspective and I’m not arguing that there is a preference for QR code’s in a lot of cases and that they are valuable and useful. I do disagree with your point about braille menus not including calorie information and allergy specifications for food. A braille menu includes all the components that a print menu does. I can speak to that point as the previous braille production specialist at Perkins myself. We insured that everything was included and national braille press as well as American printing house do the same. And just because there is a QR code doesn’t always mean that when you access the menu electronically it will be laid out properly. I’ve had a lot of trouble myself using my phone and accessing menus online. Sometimes they are OK and it is possible to figure out what pricing goes with what dish, but in other cases things are all over the place or the menu is completely outdated. Thank you for your comment. Take care.

Hi! I'm Steele. I'm working on a visual novel project that'll be blind accessible and has a blind supporting character. I wanted input from the blind community regarding him. I am willing to pay for your time. It's daunting tackling characters I can only empathize with and having someone there to be a guiding hand would make me more confident in my writing. Thank you so much for your time.
Superfreq21 points11m ago
I'll send you a PM too, I really enjoyed "Katawa Shoujo" for the most part, but it wasn't perfect, and I would jump at the chance to have input on another visual novel.

Hi, everyone! We're high school students and we need your help! This summer we made a podcast called Insight Diaries on Youtube, Spotify, Anchor, and Instagram where we interview visually-impaired adults who give advice to visually-impaired teens about a variety of topics and share their stories. We'd really appreciate it if you could leave a comment on our videos or give us feedback. Thanks! Our Instagram is insight diaries podcast, and our youtube is Insight Diaries. You can also find our feedback survey on our linktree in our Instagram bio! Thanks!
I’d love to help if you want to interview me or something. I think I can help. I’ve struggled and really learnt to advocate and represent and done a lot in my life. I can give you an interview I did. If you need someone to interview.

Hi there!
For my bachelor project, I have created TracingLens - A new decentralized application (dApp) to help trace your supermarket aliments from farm to table, through each step of the logistical process.
To assess the quality of my work and that of the application's features, I have created the following survey. It will only take 6 minutes to complete and it would help me out a lot. I would appreciate it if you could take the time to fill it in.
By answering this survey, you do not only help the scientific community, but also the developers' community in making websites more accessible so that people with disabilities can make use of them equally.
NovemberGoat1 points11m ago
Unfortunately, this survey is impossible to complete with a screen-reader. None of the questions related to the radio buttons show up at all. Would it be possible for you to host this on a different survey platform?
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Hi I tried taking your survey but one problem. None of the questions are labled or I don’t know what the questions are, there are just the choices. I will be more than happy to take it if you fix it. Also if you want to interview people about it or talk to people I am happy to do so as well.
Different-Estimate-51 points11m ago
Hey everyone! Hope your doing well.
I'm currently working on an editor for an interpreted musical programming language, basically a text editor to write code that generate music in the midi language.
My main inspiration is BeepComp, and on its forum I found that two blind persons wanted a more accessible version of the program. Being visually paired, I spent a lot of time already on the graphical user interface and its customization, but the interpreter took me no time! So I would like to make this blind-friendly version myself.
However, I don't really know how to make it easy to use for blind people, and working on Python I got a lot of options. You can help me by either dropping your ideas in a comment or filling this form: $1 In exchange I promise you a great (and free) tool for music notation.
If you want to know more about this project, you can take a look at my $1 or the $1.
SiriuslyGranger2 points11m ago
I am not musical but I am happy to help I am a techy.
Different-Estimate-51 points11m ago
Thanks, I appreciate it! My main questions are about the interface, I hesitate between a voice-only interface, a GUI made for screen readers or a keyboard and voice setup (keyboard for input, voice for feedback). What would you prefer personally?

everybody wants to do a voice interface it seems but this is probably one of the least efficient ways to do it because most people already have screen readers maybe a GUI interface and you can enable voice if that person wants but people should already have a screen reader
Different-Estimate-51 points11m ago
Ok, I'll build a GUI then. Thanks for your advice!
Also, should I use only buttons or keyboard shortcuts as well? I heard there was some problems with screen readers involving keyboard commands, but they're more efficient and too much buttons must be annoying.
What do you think?

Please tell me your craziest or funniest stories about being blind or visually impaired?
OldManOnFire2 points11m ago
I'm tall, fit, and handsome. I don't get hit on a lot, but sometimes it happens. Especially when I dress nice.
I was at WalMart awhile back. My wife was in the store but we had separated for a bit because I didn't want to wait in line at the pharmacy with her. We agreed to meet in the dairy aisle.
I was almost to the dairy aisle when a girl starts flirting with me. I politely excuse myself and don't engage. She went her way and I went mine.
I thought that was the end of the story but nope, I wouldn't be writing this if it was. Turns out she was an employee and she was checking receipts at the exit when my wife and I left the store. She waved us through without making eye contact.
\*\*\*
My wife and I dance at the local New Wave dance club most weekends. The club is on a street that's under construction so we have to park a quarter mile away in a residential neighborhood.
When we're together my wife holds my left hand and I hold my white cane in my right. My wife is mesmerized by the cane - she can't take her eyes off of it. Blind guy at night, dark neighborhood, low hanging branches, tall Redditor, BAM!
My cane tells me where the sidewalk ends, Honey. I need you to tell me where the tree branches are. When we get to the club it looks like she beat me up.
\*\*\*
We went to Tennessee to see our son and the grandbabies. My daughter in law cooked dinner and set a plate on the table in front of me, except she set it really far away, like in the middle of the table. So I pulled it closer to me. Except I was wrong - the plate was at the edge of the table, I just couldn't see how far away from the table I was sitting. So I pulled the plate right onto my lap.
\*\*\*
Whenever I fly on an airplane the airline lets me on the plane before anyone else. One time I walked onboard and was greeted by the Captain. I must have had jet lag or something - I normally wouldn't do this - but I offered him my dark glasses and white cane to mess with the rest of the passengers. He didn't laugh.
One time I didn't board first: I handed my ticket to a steward and asked him to escort me to my assigned seat. I followed him back until he turned around and said "We're here."
"Left or right?" I asked.
"Right," he said, so I reached my hand to the seat on the right and slapped the face of the woman already sitting there.
"No! *My* right, your left!"

Hahahaha I love these! Is it okay if I use these for humor on my low vision YouTube channel?

*Help with Writing a Blind Character (Hopefully someone sees this which I doubt unless people check this pinned thread frequently)
Essentially, I have a werewolf character named Gayle(Moon/Moons) and Gayle is blind, able to tell shadows and lights but that's it. Moon was born this way, and is mostly independent with moons queerplatonic partner Arya, who lives with Moon, helping out when needed.
I'm a very visual person as I can't really remember sounds/voices well and I'm unsure of how to write Gayle's POV for the next 4 chapters(18-21) as it's moons duty to write observations about one of the characters(an alter who was split into a physical person, not important to this question).
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Sure I’ll help why don’t you message me or something and we can figure it out.
TheLavenderAuthor1 points11m ago
It's all good
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
What do you mean it’s all good? I’m happy to help.
TheLavenderAuthor1 points11m ago
I figured it out! Probably should update the things I made for help

Hi, I’m Kaia Nguyen, and I’m having a personal project about mobile haptic feedback for accessibility. I’m doing user research to learn more about the experience of blind and visually impaired users with haptic feedback on smartphone. I would very appreciate your responses usung this survey link: https://forms.gle/WVaCKp6WTVpSnu8Q6 Should you have any further questions or suggestions on how this survey could be improved, please send me an email at kaia.nguyenvg@gmail.com
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
I think. You’re wasting your time. Apple has done a great job with the iphone and accessibility and it is to be improved. I think finding something else to do would be better.
stay-posi-tive1 points11m ago
Thank you for your opinion! I just started learning about this so anything will be helpful. And I think that there is still room to improve accessibility on smartphone.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Maybe on the android side? The apple side is pretty terrific. I can’t think of anything.

So anywhere in the world works. So if you want to be on an artists podcast about the blind, and wish to talk about your blindness, and also make an impact through a podcast and art please feel free to post on here or contact me or semra. Probably better to contact Semra. If you’re more comfortable contacting me I can pass your info onwards.

Our team is developing a haptic technology product to enhance the live sports experience for blind and visually impaired attendees and seek feedback to evolve our product to serve the community better. Please provide your feedback using this survey link $1
Hi, I am an affordable housing design student exploring how kitchens can be redesigned for accessibility. I wanted to get some insights on the experiences of disabled people and the barriers faced when independently accessing a conventional kitchen. Some questions I have: What are some common barriers you face when accessing a kitchen? What strategies have you developed to help you access a conventional kitchen? What would be most helpful to you? Thank you!
OldManOnFire1 points11m ago
Imagine you're blind and you're in your kitchen. You know where the sink and oven and fridge are - that's easy. It's your kitchen, after all.
Suppose you want to make a fruit salad for lunch. You open up the pantry and grab a can.
Is it a can of peaches? Is it chili beans? Chicken noodle soup? You can't read the label. Maybe it's a can of creamed corn, or maybe it's a can of tomato paste. How would you tell? They all feel the same and weigh the same.
What I really want is a kitchen camera, something installed under one of the upper cabinets that will read aloud the label of any food product I hold under the cabinet. I wouldn't care if it's a complete product or an accessory for Alexa or Siri, just something that can read the label and tell me how much potassium is in each serving.
Is this can a Bud Light or a Pepsi? Are these mint cookies gluten free? When does this carton of milk expire? How high do I set the oven for this frozen lasagna?
The only strategy I've come up with is elastic bands on the spice bottles. Spice bottles are tiny, and even though I have some usable vision left, it's not enough to read the small print on a spice bottle. So I wrap an elastic band around the curry, two elastic bands around the nutmeg, etc.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Definitely lots of iphone apps that will do this solutions to this already exist.
DannyMTZ9561 points11m ago
It's called a Pen Friend. It's an awesome tool.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
I think blind people are well suited for a normal kitchen. Maybe you want to investigate other disabilities. I find if we can find the right equipment that is actually accessible it should work.

SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Hey just wondering are you planning to close out this thread or keep it open indefinitely. There’s been a few that I’ve and others had to suggest should post over there. From this thread. And no one but me checks it and apparently one other person.
rumster1 points10m ago
Do you think we should close it now and have just a new page thread? let me know.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
I do I think a lot of the other ones are over on the other sub now. And some people are getting confused because some are posting here and summer not and there was this guy down there complaining that it’s hard to find. Which is admittedly true I don’t think people are gonna find things here think it’s gonna be much easier if it’s over on the other side.
rumster1 points10m ago
Going to replace.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Are you planning to get rid of this thread after this month and move it all to that sub then?
rumster1 points11m ago
We will keep this style of the header but it will go to the other sub.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Ah, interesting yeah, that’s a good idea.
rumster1 points10m ago
It will be eaiser to keep surveys tracked and have great surveys go to the top etc... plus no one is left out.
Rethunker1 points11m ago
Joined. Today I started writing a post and then was on the fence about whether I was effectively writing a survey post or not. Since I was on the fence, I figured it probably was a survey, even if it's a one question survey of the sort "What do you think about X?"
Anyway, happy to join the survey sub.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Most of what they mean by surveys is the studies and people asking questions like they do on this thread. Instead of a thread it would be a sub.
Rethunker2 points11m ago
As a mod on r/Blind I’ve been around as surveys were pushed into a separate thread, and now as a new sub. I’m glad to see surveys being pushed to a separate sub.
SiriuslyGranger1 points10m ago
Yeah, I think it is useful myself.
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Yes I heard about this. And I am willing to help mod if you want.
rumster1 points11m ago
I will follow up as soon as its up!
SiriuslyGranger1 points11m ago
Sure sounds great!

I also agreed I’ve joked with some people that these threads have been like ask u/siriuslyGranger time. The threads has been practically owned by me. I am pretty patient so I guess I don’t mind anything. I’ll just usually say what’s on my mind.
I know a thing or two of a new project going on and I remain willing to help whoever ends up running the sub mod or something. Like I said I practically seem to be the only one mostly answering, though I don’t know if I am as availablE as most people with having a life and a full one at that, working a bit, helping people with these things, and possibly helping people with how to do some other stuff. Yeah. But definitely willing to help mod. Having been in leadership and having in a sense a degree in it.
