Do I have shadow perception or am I using spacial awareness? (self.Blind)
submitted by VicBulbon
It might be a funny question but recently I got to thinking whether the fact that I generally is able to perceive bigger objects and walls in front of me is just me having good spacial awareness or do I actually have some shadow perception left. I have much better shadow and light perception when I was younger and I know that weakened quite a bit and today I usually describe myself as totally blind, but what I described above made me wonder. I like to think I am aware through my eyes, but I don't know, my mind could be playing tricks on me. Any ideas or how to check whether I see shadows or not?

Thanks everyone

That is light perception - being able to perceive light and the lack of.

You are probably right. I have some light perception left. Does that make me legally blind instead of totally blind? At least on the technical side of things?

Same here, blind in both eyes, just a tiny bit of light perception in the tiny sliver of my peripherals that is left to use. The doctors have me registered as blind, due to having no central or any visual acuity and no way to fix or aid the condition. Complete blindness would be zero light perception, mostly in folks with removed eyes or completely detached retinas that couldn't be saved.

This happens to me too
I do actually have light and dark perception but sometimes when I'm walking next to a building I can tell when there's like a gap like in a school building when there's doors and they're set back and sometimes the whole wall is in shade so it's not quite a visual thing and can just like feel the air change next to me except sometimes it doesn't work so I'm not sure if that's an actual ability I have or just me tricking myself into knowing where things are because I've memorized the place completely

I think you’re asking the question I asked a long time ago I think I asked it like I feel like I have a sixth sense but I. Don’t mean that other sixth sense either.

The answer came back as well, literally it’s a 6th and 7th sense.

The nice big word I got introduced to and one I like now is proprioception.

It’s part of the kinesthetic type senses along with balance and yes there’s a technical name for this one too.

I think you’re doing it like I am and I definitely use it all the time too.

This could be from be a different set of cells in your eye; $1 only sense the basic presence of certain wavelengths of light, and the signals are transmitted and processed differently.

One of the ways they confirmed their function was by finding people who had no remaining vision, but were still somehow aware of light and dark, and still maintained day/night circadian rhythms. So...yeah; shadow perception is apparently totally a thing, separate from vision.

But yeah it could also be subtle changes in air currents, temperature and echoes. Lots of subtle cues big objects have.
