Are Apple Airtags available for blind users yet and have you tried them?(self.Blind)
submitted by spaceship4parakeet
I read Apple was planning last year to make Airtags usable for blind people. Supposedly your phone would be able to tell you that the object with the airtag is 8 feet in front of you or something like that.
I’ve been going on runs on the beach and sometimes have trouble finding my way off at the correct dune exit. I’m wondering if I could hide an airtag on a tree or sign and have my phone direct me to it.
Maybe you know an app that would work for that. My dream would be to be able to drop points on GPS and have my phone help me get there even if there are no roads or paths. This would help me a lot in the woods and the beach.

They always have done this, but you need an iPhone with the U1 chip, which only includes the iPhone 11, 12, and 13 (not the new SE either.) Also, since AirTags rely on communicating with nearby iOs devices, you might get yourself into a situation where you're too far away from the AirTag to reliably locate it again. The proximity mode only starts working once you're a certain (small) number of feet away from the tag. For a low-tech hi-tech sulution, get some FRS walkie-talkies and keep them on the same channel. You can place more than one of these if you want. You can then use your master walkie-talkie to beep the other ones (they usually have a call button that sends a ringing sound over the air.) But before you bother with all that, just download Soundscape and see if GPS is good enough for your use case. If you can drop a beacon at the correct spot and find your way back, that's good enough.

Thanks! That’s seems like it could be really useful. A quick Google says soundscape is available for Apple devices too so I’ll try it.

I agree, Soundscape sounds perfect for this use case.

Trying it today, but it keeps telling me I’m in the parking lot when I’m already in my office. I’m hoping that being in the wide space of a beach will help the GPS be more accurate.

They are great! The phone vibrates when you’re close to your tagged item so yes, they are accessible

I connect a bluetooth speaker with my phone. Then when I’m looking for my spot, after getting out of the water, I raise the volume to guide myself.

They’ve been usable since day one. As long as your phone has the u1 chip, it will guide you to the tags location within a few feet. This is meant to find lost items, not for general locations, however
