How are we dealing with buzzing insects these days. (self.Blind)
submitted by LaraStardust
Afternoon all,

For anyone int the UK you'll know, these last few days have been a blinkin' nightmare!
But on top of hot weather and summer in general, come bugs. Flying bugs. flying, buzzinb bugs. Flies who pretend to be wasps. Wasps who pretend to be flies. Moths who don't buzz but need to buzz off and don't get me started on what ever the hell that is outside the window. wait, no, that's my dog. Nevermind.

My question is, what ingenious solutions, gadgets or hacks have my fellow blindies come up with for dealing with the blasted buzzing bananas, and more importantly, keep them out of their beers!

Disclaimer: solutions should include the fact i do not want to get stung and do not have enough vision to tell if that is a wasp near my beer, or a fly with one heck of an accent.

I'm lucky, my cat has a strict no bug policy and murders them on sight. Helps inside at least.

Flailing, flailing is the solution. The occasional, aaa! Isn’t strictly needed but can sometimes be necessary. Think of it this way, it’s an audio game! But in real life! Now I think on it, real life is an audio game where you can die, fun!

This is the way.

Or you could just set a coaster or napkin on top of your drink.

Aha! I will train my flailing skill!
bradley22 1 points 11m ago
That works too.

It's not as entertaining, though...

True.

Years ago, I was aware of a device you plug in the wall that emits a high-pitched frequency that bugs hate. The only caveat is that you shouldn't use it in houses with rodents or small animals, as it messes with them as well. I can't speak to the effectiveness of them as I haven't tried one yet, but I've just moved into a new place and now feels like the right time.

According to my 4 year old, all flying insects are bees anyway 😂.

I’ve had good luck with two things that don’t require sight.

For gnats, mosquitos, other little summer bugs outside that swarm in the evening — the green bottle of Johnson & Johnson baby lotion. It’s “aloe & vitamin E baby creamy oil.” Only this particular one works. It smells nice and rubs in easily. For whatever reason, bugs don’t like it but it’s not harsh like bug spray and you don’t have to wash it off.

For inside the house, a Zevo flying insect trap. There’s no chemicals. It’s basically a bright blue light light that attracts the bugs with a removable sticky screen. I’ve caught a dozen house flies and little bugs in the last 2 days. You can get it at Walmart, $20 for the starter kit and $6 for 2 refills. The refills last about 2 weeks. I have one plugged in near our kitchen trash can. It works best overnight if you have every other light in the room turned off.

I have a fear of bees and wasps, my only logical explanation is that I'm afraid of needles as well. Flies, spiders, none of the rest bother me. If you have a cat that's somewhat decent at hunting, you could use that for the task, otherwise just try to keep doors closed. That so far worked for me. As well as trapping the mother fucker behind the blind, and just hope it flies out the open window...

Oh god I feel this so much. On one hand if I turn the lights on it attracts insects, if I turn them off because I don't care about lights I get yelled at for sitting here in the dark because apparently it's a security risk.

One good trick which is preventive rather than curative is screens on the windows which almost no UK houses have. It's an American thing but if it gets really bad I might think about doing that. It is not a complete solution but it would help a lot.

Otherwise we just have to persuade someone to manufacture usb powered anti-bug artillery which can sit on the desk and take pot shots at things with pinpoint accurate nerf darts.

I wonder if removable screens exist for rental properties. I would do anything for this country to have more of them.
