Reddit accessibility issues (self.Blind)
submitted by Megabyte23
Hi Everyone. My good friend is blind and we’ve been lamenting how inaccessible Reddit is. For example, yesterday, he clicked the link to see related threads, but nothing happened. “He uses chrome and firefox on Android withTalkback. Do you guys have a suggested configuration or have you just learned how to navigate around the flaws?

Tell them to use the official Reddit Android app or the third-party app called **RedReader**. Both work well enough.

The official app is less good than it was, I switched to Sync Pro, however you need to have talkback reading ID of unlabeled cause while it's really good it's missing labels across most of the app. When the official app is fixed from the latest fuckup by reddit devs I’ll move back to it.

Hi from the blind friend. Thanks for the help everyone. Redreader works well for me under Android. And great to see efforts to improve accessibility. So far this third party app works much better than the official app or the web page, which I often access under Linux. This will do for now.

Yess! Hi Austin! I didn't mention that your desktop is Linux. A couple of people mentioned that the website only works well on Windows. I sent you that link which opened in the web browser rather than redreader. I'm sure there's a way to configure it so anything with the "$1" prefix will open in redreader, but I don't want to suggest anything that might throw off your other settings. Maybe someone has a suggestion.

It should be accessible if you use apps especially 3rd party but I heard that android native reddit app is better. The ios one is crap so you’ll have to try another one.

I'm using reddit.com/.compact

I use native reddit app on android, and or chrome with NVDA on windows, and no major accessibility issues in either place. I would not recommend using browsers on mobile devices however. Just use the app in those cases, but if you're on desktop, like mac or windows, then yea, the site works as intended.

If he has a windows machine, he could try redditforblind, google it :)

It makes read it very very fast and is made by a blind person so it’s accessible.

I've been using Apollo for Reddit on iOS and it's much more accessible than either the site or the official app

I've been talking to them about the issues. They are working on them and hopefully will start launching updates soon.

That's amazing, thank you. He's a programmer, so we talk a lot about how it's obvious when the programmer's built accessibility into the design or included it as an after thought. He's also done a lot of accessibility consulting, so if reddit devs need expert help, it could be a good match.

I'm a CPWA myself. I point stuff and hope they finally fix all these issues.
