Sunglasses recommendation (self.Blind)
submitted by derangespoo
Hello, I'm extremely sensitive to light and I'm looking to buy good wrap-around sunglasses to use both indoors and outdoors. Do you guys have any recommendations ?
What kinds of sunglasses do you guys use ?

I don’t think this is going to help you much, but I got a pair custom tinted. I don’t remember what brand they are, Raybans maybe. I went to the optician, found a pair of wraparound frames that I liked, and got them to tint them extra dark. Happily, the optician is a friend who knows something about my condition, as she had to argue with the lab who didn’t tint them dark enough the first time (that no, I absolutely will not be using them for driving, ever).

All sunglasses, at least here in Canada, are sold with a specific range of tints off the shelf, not too light or too dark, for people to use them safely while driving. Of course, that means no off the shelf pair is dark enough for me, so hence, shelling out the money for a custom pair.

I'm also photophobic, and it's really hard to find good sunglasses. I also got some custom tinted to be really dark at the top and then get lighter at the bottom to block the light source but still be able to see. My low vision optometrist did this for free! I just had to pay for the frames. I actually picked frames that are meant to go over glasses because they have that extra coverage all over!

I use some from here: https://cocoonseyewear.com. Different tint/polarization options, along with detailed info on the light transmission profile for each. Also, my experience with customer service was great. Couldn’t figure out which lens to get so they suggested ordering several and just returning the ones I didn’t want. I did that, and the return was totally no hassle. These are designed to fit over regular glasses, and I normally just wear them plain.

It might be worth getting a low vision appointment with an optometrist specifically for the photophobia. They can help you find the right lens and frame. Mine recommended a pair from $1. They are very effective but more expensive and less stylish than say the Cocoon's /u/Fredchasing475 mentioned.

I have 3 pairs of sunglasses that I use for my photophobia.

- A pair of the NoIR fit-overs mentioned above. The optometrist recommendation was for very dark lenses. They work great when outdoors for long periods but a bit too dark for most indoor conditions. (most expensive)
- A generic pair of snow sport wraparounds. These are less dark and work well when frequently transitioning between indoor and outdoor conditions but not so well when outdoors for longer periods. (least expensive)
- A pair of wraparound smartglasses that have a mic and near ear speakers and connects to my phone. I can use them to make calls, listen to directions, books, music, etc. They are great for long bus/train rides but I have to wear a wide brim hat when I use them because a lot of light can come in around the edges. Not so great for long periods outdoors.

Extra in the smart sunglasses, do you have a link?

Glacier glasses. I love mine. They’re super dark and have cool leather side covers. You’ll look a bit like you’re at a steampunk cosplay, but they work.

I’ve started using clip-on flip-up sunglass lenses on top of my regular sunglasses. They only cost about five dollars and they add a layer of darkness. Also, I can flip them up when I go into dark shadows where my regular sunglasses are enough.
