I have been working with a friend a few hours a week. He suddenly went blind. Besides paperwork, I read his emails to him and reply.
Is there some way he could read and respond to his own email? I feel bad that he has to wait for me to come in to read it to him.
Thanks.

All Modern operating systems have a screen reader which can read things such as email. These are either built in or a free download. What program and what operating system are they using to access their email? The screen readers can allow someone to access documents or the Internet or to use a computing device.

I'll check with Lighthouse for the Blind. Maybe they have a class to teach my friend how to read his email.

Ask about O&M (Orientation and Mobility) lessons. These are lessons meant to help someone learn to navigate daily life, particularly when they experience vision loss or other conditions that impact their mobility. I have included a URL that goes to Lighthouse's page about O&M. You can also find videos on YouTube that may offer some help.
Additionally, if there is a Vocational Rehabilitation office near you, they may be able to offer your friend access to services that can help them.

I use nvda on windows seven and ten. I have an I phone which I'm not really good with, but Apple has a toal free support line for visually handicapped people and they are very good.

No matter what phone he has he can use it with the built-in screen reader. For android it is talk back and for iPhone it is voiceover. They take a little bit of time to get used to but once you get the hang of it you can do anything you want on your phone again including reading composing the deleting and archiving emails.
There are many video tutorials on how to use a screen reader on your phone on YouTube and even Apple themselves has released one for voiceover which gives you a basic introduction to it which can definitely get you going.

Excited about this.
Will talk with him about email on phone....I know he has voiceover, but has problems using it for just phone calls and texts.

Screen readers is your answer. Get nvda on his computer it’s free. And also turn on narrator.

As others have suggested, use screen readers. I'd suggest starting off with phones first, because it is generally considered to be easier than computers. Depending how tech literate you are, it might take some time to get the hang of things, but it is certainly not too hard. To be honest, being able to operate most basic daily needs function on the phone will not require too much training time. The results is pretty rewarding too, being able to go back to do basic things like noting, emailing, using social media and shopping independently.

While you get some of the screenreader options set up, reading email is a very common task performed by $1 agents.
