Chromebook good for blind people? (self.Blind)
submitted by serengetisunset
Hi everyone! I’m looking to help my friend who’s blind buy a laptop after his was destroyed in an accident. He’s in Nairobi, Kenya (I’m in Sydney, Australia) and said he can’t find anyone who’s had experience with Chromebooks. I’m curious if anyone here can tell me whether current Chromebooks are easy to use for blind people, or if they’re as terrible as one 6 year old Reddit thread supposed. Windows and Mac would be stretching my budget quite a bit but I will go there if it turns out Chromebooks just can’t do the job. In case it matters, he’s a disability rights activist and so uses social media quite a bit, as well as basic web browsing and might need to record some audio notes here and there. Thanking y’all for your help 😊

Its a very simple computer however you look at it. But it is accessible and works fine.

As a Teacher of the visually impaired, I have students who use chrome books and students who use computers with Windows. I definitely prefer windows over chrome books. While chrome books have a great deal of accessibility, there is just not as much as windows. Windows will allow Jaws (or other programs) to be used to fully read everything if needed. Chrome does not.

I feel like I have to weigh in on this as well. Chromebook‘s, are horrible. From the standpoint of somebody who constantly uses their computer all day, makes music, hangs out with people on line, plays games, and web browses. I need a lot of resources. The first of which Google Chrome books don’t necessarily provide. This is, unless, you get it from a vendor that isn’t google in which case you’re paying as much as you would for a Windows laptop, so at that point, it would be better to get one of those. Considering that chrome OS is so locked down in the features are so limited, The Chromebook wouldn’t be much fun. But to each their own, I guess. The general reason Chromebook exists is for people who don’t require much to do. Also, it’s those who want an entry computer at low cost. This is why a lot of school districts have switched to this type of computer. It’s much more budget, friendly, but lacks a lot of features and customization abilities. Something that if you were to become more of an advanced, user you are going to really want.

They're usable, but if you/the OP have experience with Windows and can afford it, I'd recommend it over a Chromebook. Jonathan Mosen, a very well-respected figure in the blindness community, did an in-depth review of Chromebooks from a blindness perspective over several episodes of his podcast, Mosen At Large. Perhaps your friend or you could listen to his demonstration to see if it would be feasible.
