SAP with screen readers? (self.Blind)
submitted by r_1235
Hi,

Basically wanted to know if there are any blind SAP users, the ERP solution I am talking about.

I've been trying to figur out accessibility for it, but can't get NVDA to read all parts of it. Same is the case with jaws. Have heard that we have to install SAP screen reader extension, but couldn't find any link for same on the internet. I've enabled the SAP signiture theme, and also tried with other recommended themes. Further I enabled Accessibility mode, but yet some screens remain inaccessible, or screen readers speak some weird thing.

I myself very new to SAP, so would appriciate any help in this regard.

Thank you

Can you contact SAP support through your company? It's terribly difficult to find useful SAP information online and it's a niche. I would go directly to support. Also, maybe you can use Fiori apps in your browser instead of SAPGUI. Fiori apps should be much more accessible and many sighted people would also prefer them because SAPGUI is disgusting.

Yup, using Fiori for now. But we wanted to see if SAP GUI would be accessible as well. Wrote an email to SAP Accessibility, given on their website, no reply. Can go through company channels, but it will take some time.

Also, is there a beginner's guide to SAP from a blind user's perspective? So many modules and things, I need to catch up quickly.

I have been working as a "self-taught" ABAP developer with great business analysts for some time. I don't have any formal SAP training, and honestly I only really get the pure ABAP things, but if you ask me the only way to get up to speed is to get official SAP certifications. SAP is just not a "Googleable" piece of software if you know what I mean. It's far too complex. I bought books on some modules but I find them incredibly unhelpful since they feel more like a reference for people who know the system very well rather than anything else.

As for the blindness aspect, I use magnification software and that works. But honestly I'd just push for Fiori. SAP GUI is really quirky, ugly and frustrating to all (yes, no most, even Hasso Plattner dislikes SAP GUI) your sighted peers too and its a huge productivity drain (you can barely copy and paste in SAP GUI).

Sorry that I cannot really be much more helpful. SAP is just so big and its in own ways always niche-y.
