Improving Use With Screen Curtain? (self.Blind)
submitted by razzretina
This is a bit of a strange question I'm sure but do any of you have any tips for getting better at using iPhone with screen curtain enabled?

I have terrible vision but I was unfortunately trained to use it at all costs growing up and it's something I find difficult to stop even in situations where it benefits me not to use it. I'm really used to using that little bit of vision to help me navigate my phone even with Voiceover on. But this past week while I've been having a migraine I find that things like using Braille screen input go a lot better when I just have screen curtain on. Does anyone have any suggestions for using the phone more without relying so much on my vision? Is it just a matter of practice? Does anyone else with a little bit of sight use screen curtain too?

Thanks for any info guys!

I've had no sight to lose but ...

• Learn your apps: regular things are often in regular places, - particularly the back button, the spacing of tabs across the bottom of the screen, search/submit/continue buttons etc. Some apps have a very specific layout, like the iOS calendar.
• Make use of the move to top and move to bottom gestures, tapping the status bar to scroll to top, pulling to refresh which can speed things up.
• either organise your rotor well, or remap gestures, to allow for next/prev heading or container, depending on which apps you use most. Headings are mapped to my 2 finger left/right for example.
• remember you can swipe between apps with 4 fingers, and the VO rotor handles text selection, misspellings and other editing options too, so pressing and holding on text areas is less necessary.

This is really helpful thank you! I didn't even know about the 4 finger swipe!

yup, just practice. That said, I do turn it off from time to time as a comfort thing from back before my eyes ragequit. Old habits die hard

Thank you for the encouragement! It's nice to know I'm not the only one who does this sometimes heh

Yeah, practice and experimentation. Maybe some assistive technology lessons?

Practice practice practice! I still have a little bit of vision, but I use the screen curtain all the time to save my phone battery. I only turn it off if I get stuck and I want to use what I can see to try and figure out how to get unstuck lol

I'm completely blind since birth so IDK if this will help, but you can flik left / right on your screen to navigate elements. Depending weather or not you have grouped navigation enabled you will either navigate by containers or just all elements layed out in order.

As others have said, I think it's just a matter of practice. I've never had any vision to lose, but practice makes perfect, as the saying goes.
