Where can I learn to edit video’s? (self.Blind)
submitted 1d ago by BlindAllDay
Hello everyone,
I am blind and have recently begun creating online content. While I have a few people who help me edit my videos, I am eager to learn how to edit them myself. Specifically, I would like to learn how to trim videos, add background music, and incorporate sound effects. Could you please provide me with some resources to help me learn these skills?

###r/Blind is back up but the struggle goes on. Until we have the same access to Reddit's content as our sighted friends we insist Reddit allows us to use the apps which meet our needs.

I'd ask u/accessaces how she edits her videos. She's a really nice person, and I'm sure she'd be able to help.

There are visually impaired content creators who have made videos on the process. Specifically, I have seen The Blind Life on YouTube do videos about how he deals with cameras and such. More directly, Alisha B on YouTube has done video editing walk thrus. https://youtu.be/b3aylhLdax8

Use Reaper.

Massive learning curve, but there's good comunity to help along the way.

Focus is on audio, but, all tasks you described for video can be done in Reaper as well.

I have heard about it before. thanks.

So basically, what you're saying is that the functionality is primarily focused on audio editing, but if it can also be used for video editing as if it were audio editing?

When you say "blind", the big question: how much vision do you have?

Also, what platforms are you using/have access to?

Hello,
I apologize for not specifying the extent of my visual impairment in my previous message. I was referring to the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) definition of blind. To clarify, I am considered nearly totally blind. Although I do have some light perception, my vision is nearly totally blind. I use Windows as my operating system.

Thanks for clarifying, as well as listing which definition you used too, that definitely helped me.

Having never had any sight myself, I can unfortunately confirm that short of using Windows MovieMaker (a long deprecated piece of software) or trying to get through an overly steep learning curve of Reaper as a video editor (i.e. not its intended function really), on Windows in terms of screen reader accessible editing, you're out of luck.

I bought a Mac Mini for this reason last year and, whilst again its a learning curve, I've managed to edit videos like this together without sighted assistance (other than for the very rare case where my project starts out incorrectly formatted without me realising which is on me). I know this has no background music, but I'm looking into learning how to make that work viably in post as well. I use Final Cut for all my editing and put together this editing tutorial to show how things work.

I hope that helps and sorry I couldn't be the bringer of better news.

Practice makes perfect they say. Make a sacrificial copy of a video file. Bring it into the editor and learn the interface. You'll quickly find out if it's accessible friendly.

One suggestion is to keep video segments on the shorter end at first. This will allow you to review and know the content. I can't imagine any screen reader describing the video content in the timeline. It may call out the time stamp and this is how you will find / know where you are, that and playback.

To learn your specific software, read the manual, online instructions, play YouTube videos, or follow a course.

Taking small steps and improving as you go will be important. Have patience and make it fun.

thanks for the advice.

This depends on a lot of factors, but primarily how great you at using your screen reader and what platform are you on?? Searching on YouTube for editing a video blind will yield a ton of results. Here’s a random video that I just copy and paste it for you.. The simplest and easiest would be iMovie on any iOS device, and it seems to be the go to, for most visually impaired creators, including myself, which I am in the process of learning it myself..
